The Diagnostic Problem: One Signal Can Be Too Easy to Misread
A high mark may reflect genuine capability, familiar questions, recent revision, generous prompting, strong checking or a paper that happened to fit the learner well.
A low mark may reflect missing knowledge, weak transfer, unstable retrieval, misread wording, poor time control, one cascading error, or a temporarily difficult day.
The mark matters. But if we ask it to answer every diagnostic question, we make the evidence carry more weight than it can justify.
Convergence Is Strongest When the Signals Are Not Just Copies of One Another
Five worksheets completed immediately after the same lesson are not five independent pieces of evidence in the strongest sense. They may all share the same fresh memory, wording and teacher support.
Stronger convergence comes from changing the conditions.

If several of these different conditions support the same interpretation, the claim is more load-bearing.
Example: “The Learner Understands This Concept Independently”
That sounds simple. Curie asks what evidence earns it.
- The learner explains the relationship in their own words.
- They retrieve it after time has passed.
- They recognise it when the question changes form.
- They begin without a route cue.
- They can identify when the concept does not apply.
- They catch a plausible error and repair it.
No single item proves independence. Together, they can form a much stronger picture.
Evidence Convergence Is Not a Vote
Curie should not become “four green signals beat two red signals.”
Different observations answer different questions. A learner may have stable conceptual understanding but fragile performance under time. Both can be true.
The job is to ask whether the signals genuinely speak to the same claim before combining them.
English: Meaning Should Appear Across More Than One Form
Suppose an English learner appears strong at inference.
Converging evidence might include accurate inference in unfamiliar passages, justified evidence selection, clear explanation of why the evidence supports the inference, and stable performance after the exact classroom examples have faded.

Mathematics: Correct Working Is Stronger When Structure, Selection and Checking Agree

Evidence for independent mathematical capability becomes stronger when the learner also selects the route in mixed work, represents the problem correctly, predicts a plausible result, checks the answer, and handles a changed example.

Science: Explanation Strengthens When Different Evidence Routes Agree

Additional Mathematics: Fluency, Selection and Verification Should Not Be Collapsed
A-Math performance becomes more trustworthy when several layers agree: algebraic execution, method selection, representation, boundary awareness, result checking and transfer to mixed questions.
If only one layer is strong, the diagnosis should stay narrow rather than declaring the whole subject secure.
Repair: Look for the Earliest Signal That Refuses to Converge
- State the claim you are trying to test.
- Choose two or three genuinely different conditions that speak to that claim.
- Observe what happens without forcing agreement.
- Identify which signal departs from the others.
- Test that weak layer directly.
- Repair it.
- Return to the wider evidence set.
The objective is not to manufacture consistency. It is to understand why consistency is or is not present.

That is more useful than “You are good at this topic.” It preserves the evidence and the remaining uncertainty.

- Does this improvement appear only in one recent test, or in several different situations?
- Can my child still do it after a few days?
- Can they start without being told the method?
- Can they explain why the answer makes sense?
- Does the same capability survive unfamiliar wording?
Voyage: Stronger Independence Requires Stronger Evidence
Across the Voyage, learners are expected to carry more responsibility inward. Claims of readiness should therefore become more demanding: not just “can do with support,” but “can retrieve, select, explain, transfer and monitor under increasingly realistic conditions.”
Darwin: Converging Evidence Can Show That an Adaptation Worked
The Darwin Series asks whether the learning method has adapted to a changed environment. Evidence convergence helps verify that the repair is not local: the improvement should appear in more than the exact exercise used during intervention.
Boundaries
- Do not reduce convergence to a hidden score or tally.
- Do not combine observations that answer different questions as though they were interchangeable.
- Do not ignore contradictory evidence because most signals look favourable.
- Do not require every capability to look identical across every context.
- Keep uncertainty visible when the evidence is still sparse.
The Core Rule of Evidence Convergence
Test important learning claims through more than one genuinely different window, strengthen confidence only when those signals support the same interpretation, and keep any dissenting evidence visible enough to change the conclusion.

There is no fixed number. The question is whether the evidence is sufficiently varied and relevant to the claim being made.
Is a test score still useful?
