The Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association’s own history dates its formation to 19 August 1972. That is the organisation’s founding date, not the opening date of its Sengkang Step-Up centre.
Local history often brings together these different timelines. An established organisation can create a new service in a newer town. Keeping the institution and the local milestone separate avoids giving either the wrong birthday.
SANA’s history records the first Step-Up centre at Sengkang in July 2016. It describes the centre as a community touchpoint supporting people in the aftercare stage of recovery, including counselling and financial assistance.
This is a history of support, not a claim that the neighbourhood has a particular level of drug-related problems. The presence of a service tells us where support was organised; it does not justify assumptions about residents.
The organisation’s history emphasises family support in reintegration. Its account places the Sengkang centre within efforts to strengthen community support for recovering people and their families.
Our interpretation is that a neighbourhood’s social infrastructure includes places where people can rebuild everyday life. Such work may be less visible than a new mall or bridge, but it belongs in the town’s story.
