NParks’s opening release states that the Round Island Route was first announced in 2012. On 22 January 2022, it opened the 75-kilometre first phase, covering the eastern half of the planned route.
The dates describe a proposal and a completed phase, not two competing opening years. They also show why it would be inaccurate to describe the whole planned island loop as completed in 2022.
The release traced the first phase from Rower’s Bay Park through Sengkang Riverside Park, Changi Bay and East Coast Park, then past the Singapore River to Berlayer Creek.
For a Sengkang resident, this changes the scale of the map. A familiar park is also part of a route extending far beyond the town. You can appreciate that connection without attempting its full length.
The 2022 account highlighted a 290-metre cycling bridge at Sengkang Riverside Park and new rest nodes at Sengkang Riverside Park, Jalan Kayu and Changi Bay Point.
Our reading is that a useful recreational network needs both movement and pauses. A bridge removes a break in a journey; a rest point makes that journey easier to divide. They solve different practical problems.
Compare the first-phase map with a local Sengkang map. Identify where the local park joins the larger route, then choose a short outing suited to the people coming with you.
Use current NParks maps and notices for actual access. The 2022 release described a planned eventual 150-kilometre route; this article does not claim that the entire future network is complete today.
