Sengkang Bus Interchange history begins a major chapter on 18 January 2003, when the air-conditioned interchange started operations alongside Sengkang LRT’s first passenger services.
The story continued with Compassvale Bus Interchange in March 2017 and a later programme of upgrading at Sengkang. In 2026, five services temporarily moved to Compassvale; an official notice schedules their return for 31 October 2026.
This eduKateSengkang guide explains how the milestones fit together. The service arrangements below were checked on 11 October 2026, so read the date carefully if you are using the article to plan a journey.

1. The 18 January 2003 opening
SBS Transit’s 2003 annual report records the air-conditioned Sengkang Bus Interchange starting operations on 18 January 2003, when the Sengkang LRT also began revenue service.
The report describes the interchange as Singapore’s second air-conditioned bus interchange after Toa Payoh. It presented the town’s transport arrangements as bringing bus and rail travel together.
That is the core historical milestone here. The date marks the start of operations at the air-conditioned interchange, rather than every earlier bus arrangement serving the developing town.

2. Why integration matters to a traveller
An interchange is a place where journeys change direction or mode. Its usefulness depends on more than the arrival of a vehicle: people also need to find their way, wait and make the next connection.
Think of a familiar trip through the town centre. The transfer may take only a small part of the journey, but unclear directions or an awkward route can make that part feel much longer.
The rail side has its own timeline. Our Sengkang LRT history follows that story, while the Compass One history explains the mall’s later renewal.

3. Compassvale’s complementary role in 2017
LTA’s 2016/2017 annual report states that Compassvale Bus Interchange began operations in March 2017 to complement Sengkang Bus Interchange. It described connections by a sheltered overhead bridge and an at-grade crossing.
The report also records the addition of Service 374, connecting Sengkang West residents with Sengkang MRT. Those are historical descriptions of the expansion at that time.
Keep the two names distinct. Compassvale and Sengkang describe separate interchange locations, even when both contribute to journeys around the same town centre.

4. The upgrading programme and temporary move
LTA’s 19 December 2025 announcement states that progressive upgrading had begun in August 2024. The work included mechanical and electrical systems, the concourse and driveway waterproofing.
To support the next phase, Services 80, 86, 87, 372 and 374 were to move temporarily to Compassvale from 31 January 2026 through the end of October. The announcement also described a temporary stop on Sengkang Square for Services 372 and 374.
A temporary relocation belongs in a history of the interchange because it shows how an operating facility can be renewed while continuing to serve commuters.

5. The scheduled return on 31 October 2026
An official route-amendment notice schedules all five services to return to Sengkang Bus Interchange on Saturday, 31 October 2026 and resume their original routes. It states that Services 372 and 374 will then stop calling at temporary stop 67689 along Sengkang Square.
As of this article’s check on 11 October 2026, that return is a future scheduled change. It should not be read as already completed.
For a trip around the changeover, consult the linked notice and current operator information. The history timeline helps explain the move; it does not replace live service information.

6. Read the town centre through its journeys
On a visit, notice how signs distinguish the destinations and how people move towards their next connection. You can enjoy the town centre while paying attention to a piece of infrastructure normally taken for granted.
Try making a four-step timeline: 2003 interchange opening, 2017 complementary interchange, upgrading from 2024 and the 2026 temporary arrangements. Label an event as completed or scheduled according to the date being discussed.
For another transport chapter within Sengkang, continue with Buangkok MRT and its integrated transport hub.
