Compass One History | How Compass Point Became Sengkang’s Renewed Town-Centre Mall

Three secondary students working together during a tutor-led small-group lesson

Some places keep their old names in conversation long after the sign above the entrance changes. If you have heard someone call Compass One “Compass Point”, you have met a small piece of Sengkang’s local history.

The mall’s own published material identifies Compass Point as its former name. The 2016 refurbishment and reopening provide a clear milestone in the story of the place.

This eduKateSengkang guide follows that change and explains how an ordinary shopping trip can become an enjoyable look at the town centre’s everyday life.

1. Compass Point and Compass One refer to the same mall

Compass One’s 2018 press material describes it as formerly known as Compass Point and places it at 1 Sengkang Square.

That is the useful first answer for a reader trying to connect an older memory with a current place. A name change can make two references sound unrelated even when they point to the same familiar destination.

Ask a longtime resident which name they use, and why. The answer may be habit, a remembered outing or simply the name they learned first. Those explanations belong to personal memory rather than an official naming record.

2. Two reopening dates, two different events

M&G Real Estate’s 27 September 2016 announcement states that the upgraded mall had opened its doors again on 1 September. The formal reopening ceremony took place on 27 September.

Both dates can therefore appear in accounts without being contradictory. One describes the return of public shopping visits; the other marks the ceremony.

This is a handy reading habit for local history. When two dates appear, ask what event each one describes before deciding that one must be wrong.

3. What the 2016 announcement tells us

The owner described a major upgrade, more than 50 new retailers, an expanded food and beverage area and a new wet and dry children’s playground. It also reported a BCA Green Mark Gold rating.

These details describe the reopening in 2016. They are a snapshot of that moment, so use the mall’s current information when planning a visit to a particular shop or facility.

The historical announcement lets us see what the owner wanted to highlight: shopping, eating, family activities and environmental improvements. It is a source written for an opening event, with that purpose in mind.

4. Why an everyday mall belongs in local history

A town’s history includes places people use repeatedly. Shopping lists, meals and meeting points can create a strong connection to a building even when no grand event is happening there.

Think about a visit from the user’s perspective. Someone may want one quick purchase; another may be waiting for a friend. A family may need a break between activities. The same mall can support several rhythms within one afternoon.

That is why a refurbishment matters to neighbourhood life: it changes a familiar setting people already know how to use. The exact effect on each person depends on their own routine.

5. Things to do with a history lens

Turn your next visit into a small observation exercise. Choose one public gathering area and notice how people use it: passing through, pausing or meeting someone. Avoid photographing strangers for the exercise.

You could also pair the trip with some reading. Our Sengkang Public Library history follows a nearby institution’s own opening and renewal milestones.

For children, a short description works well: “People use this space for…” followed by three things they observed. Keep historical facts in a separate sentence with their source.

6. Keep the old name and the new story together

Remembering Compass Point does not require a complete reconstruction of every shop that used to be there. An older photograph, a personal account and a dated announcement each preserve a different part of the story.

Try making a two-column note: what the historical source says, and what you notice on this visit. The result is a modest but useful record of change.
