Outram Secondary School in Sengkang: Business and Enterprise at Anchorvale

Outram Secondary School’s Anchorvale campus is a useful addition to a Sengkang family’s school research. The school’s official website directs readers to its Anchorvale campus information, including a guide to its Applied Learning Programme.

That campus programme guide identifies Business and Enterprise as its ALP focus. It describes practical projects and industry collaboration that introduce entrepreneurial thinking and problem-solving.

This parent guide explains the theme through an original, hypothetical stationery project. Your teenager can practise estimating costs, understanding a user and explaining a decision, while keeping the activity small enough to complete on paper.

Choose your reading route

Understand the learning theme: start with the programme. Try an activity: begin with a family task. Plan your next step: read the parent questions.

PART 1 OF 6

Understand the enterprise learning theme

Back to contents

Outram’s official Anchorvale campus ALP guide connects business learning with critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving. It also links the programme with contributing thoughtfully to society.

For parents, this opens a useful conversation about how a student makes a decision. Who would find an idea helpful? What resources would it need? Which assumptions must be checked? Enterprise learning can bring those questions together around a practical task.

PART 2 OF 6

Begin with a user’s need

Back to contents

Imagine a simple stationery pack for a family homework session. Ask what the user actually needs: perhaps a pencil, eraser and a way to keep them together. Avoid adding items solely because they make the pack look impressive.

Write a short description of the user and the problem. Then sketch two possible packs. Ask a family member which would help and why. The response may reveal that convenience matters more than the number of items.

PART 3 OF 6

Build a clear hypothetical budget

Back to contents

Use invented figures and label them as practice assumptions. Suppose materials cost $2 per pack and preparation materials add a fixed $6. For ten packs, the total would be $26 before any other costs.

Ask the teenager to explain which cost changes when the number of packs changes. If the hypothetical selling price is $3, ten packs would bring in $30 of revenue. The $4 difference is only the surplus within this simplified model.

PART 4 OF 6

Check what the model leaves out

Back to contents

Discuss missing factors such as time, unused stock, delivery or equipment. Also ask what happens if only eight of ten prepared packs are sold. The materials have already been paid for, so lower sales change the result.

This is a learning exercise rather than a recommendation to start selling. Its value lies in making assumptions visible. A neat calculation becomes more useful when the student can explain where it applies and what might change it.

PART 5 OF 6

Write a truthful description

Back to contents

Prepare a short description of the pack that states what it contains and how it helps. Ask whether every claim can be supported. Replace a vague promise with a concrete detail the user can check.

Then present the idea in one minute: the need, proposed pack, assumed costs and one uncertainty. A clear explanation combines mathematics with English and thoughtful judgement. Let a listener ask a question before revising the proposal.

Research the campus and routine together

Back to contents

Use Outram Secondary School’s current website and the Anchorvale campus information it links to. Confirm current campus arrangements, admission details and programme organisation directly through official channels.

Consider the journey through Anchorvale, CCA commitments and your teenager’s interests. A distinctive programme gives you a starting point, while the wider school environment and sustainable daily routine help you assess fit. Bring specific questions about learning experiences to the conversation.
