North Vista Secondary School’s current Applied Learning Programme gives Sengkang families a practical learning theme to explore: food sustainability. Its 2026 Farm-to-Table programme connects classroom ideas with growing food and understanding resources.
The school describes hydroponics experiences for all Secondary 1 students and a separate BioBloom composting project for selected Infocomm Club members. Those are different levels of participation, so it is useful to read the programme details carefully.
This guide explains the theme and offers an original family activity: tracing the journey of one vegetable in an ordinary meal. A few good questions can connect science, geography, mathematics and clear communication without needing a home farming system.
Choose your reading route
Understand the learning theme: start with the programme. Try an activity: begin with a family task. Plan your next step: read the parent questions.

North Vista’s official ALP page places sustainable farming within its 2026 context of cities and urban landscapes. It describes hands-on learning that helps pupils connect academic knowledge with everyday challenges.
For parents, a useful question is what the student understands about the system. How does food reach the table? What resources are involved? What can an observation establish? Looking for these connections gives you more to discuss than the appearance of a finished garden.
Choose a vegetable your family already uses. Read its packaging or purchase label together, and note any stated origin. Ask which parts of the journey are known and which remain uncertain.
Draw a simple route from growing to transport, sale, preparation and eating. Label guesses as guesses. A country-of-origin label gives one piece of information; it does not establish every farm practice or transport step.
Pick one question to investigate through reliable reading, such as how roots receive water and nutrients in a hydroponic system. Let your teenager explain the question in their own words before looking for an answer.
After reading, ask for a diagram with labelled parts and arrows. The explanation should show the relationship between the parts. If something remains unclear, write a follow-up question rather than hiding the gap behind a complicated word.
For an original home exercise, compare the amount of a vegetable purchased with the amount prepared for a meal. Use consistent units and distinguish edible portions from parts your family ordinarily removes.
Discuss what the measurement can tell you. It might help plan the next purchase, but one meal does not describe the whole household’s habits. Keep the conclusion proportionate and let the student suggest what additional observations would help.
Choose a modest action, such as checking what is already available before adding vegetables to the shopping list. Keep usual food-storage and hygiene practices, and let an adult manage preparation.
Review the action after a few meals. Did the list become more accurate? Were quantities easier to plan? A short account of the result lets the teenager connect an idea with evidence from everyday life. The purpose is learning from a manageable change.
Read North Vista Secondary School’s current ALP and Vistarian Experience pages. Ask how students record and explain their learning, and clarify which opportunities are school-wide or selected.
Consider the Sengkang commute, CCA schedule and time for rest alongside the programme. A teenager interested in growing food may also enjoy measurement, design or explaining systems. Use that interest to begin a conversation about the broader school experience and future learning.
