The rebuilt route works.
Now comes the uncomfortable part.
The learner has two systems.
Alicia still remembers the old checking routine that protected accuracy. She has also learned the rebuilt faster version that preserves the high-value checks without consuming the whole paper.
Beatrice can use the older visible paragraph frame if she becomes uncertain. She can also use the rebuilt principle-based planning route that gives her more flexibility.
Denise has a recovered moderate-timing routine and a rebuilt whole-paper timing route that has now survived a controlled trial.
Emily can fall back to the old simple weekly plan. She also has a rebuilt reallocation rule for heavy school weeks.
Faith can still use one light initiation prompt. She has also demonstrated that she can now ask herself the same question silently and begin unfamiliar work without waiting for the tutor.
Both routes may still work.
That is exactly why the transition matters.
If the tutor leaves both routes equally alive forever, the learner must keep deciding which system is authoritative. The parent may continue using the old support. The tutor may switch back and forth depending on mood. The learner may preserve an obsolete scaffold “just in case”. The new route is technically adopted but never becomes the actual normal.
A Cutover is the deliberate transfer of operational authority from an earlier stable learning route to a rebuilt and validated route, with the old route retained only as a defined fallback for a limited period rather than as a permanent competing system.

Once the new route has earned adoption, how does the tutor make it the real route without keeping the old route alive forever, losing rollback capacity too early, or forcing the learner through an abrupt handoff?

1. What This Volume Owns
This volume owns the handoff from an adopted candidate route to the learner’s actual normal operating route.
The route has already been designed.
It has already been tested.
It has already earned enough evidence to pass the Adoption Gate.
Now authority has to move.
Which route does the learner use first?
Which routine does the tutor reinforce?
Which support does the parent stop providing?
Which old aid remains available only for fallback?
What would justify returning to the earlier stable state?
The Cutover answers those questions.
2. What This Volume Does Not Own
The Trial Run owns the bounded test of a candidate route.
The Adoption Gate owns the decision that the candidate deserves standard status.
The Drift Check owns detection when enacted practice quietly diverges from the adopted route.
The Rollback owns restoration after the newer route becomes meaningfully less reliable.

3. Adoption Is a Decision; Cutover Is an Operating Change
A route can be approved and still not be the route people actually use.
The tutor says the new help-seeking routine is now standard.
But the tutor still prompts early whenever the learner hesitates.
The parent says the learner now owns the study plan.
But the parent still sends nightly reminders.
The student says the new checking routine is the normal one.
But the old full checklist remains beside every worksheet and gets used whenever uncertainty rises.
Adoption without cutover creates nominal change.
Cutover makes the new route authoritative in ordinary practice.
4. Every Cutover Needs a Protected Invariant
Something must not be lost while the route changes.
For Alicia, it may be sign and unit accuracy.
For Beatrice, it may be the relationship between a claim and its supporting development.
For Denise, it may be method-selection accuracy while timing becomes more realistic.
For Emily, it may be sleep and completion stability while peak-week replanning becomes more independent.
For Faith, it may be meaningful first attempts rather than silent waiting.
The route may change. The protected capability must survive the handoff.
5. The Cutover Equation
Adopted Route + Protected Invariant + Clear Authority + Bounded Parallel Window + Fallback Rule + Bridge Retirement + Verification = Successful Cutover.
Each term matters.
- Without an adopted route, cutover is premature.
- Without a protected invariant, the tutor may improve one variable while dropping an essential capability.
- Without clear authority, old and new routines compete.
- Without a bounded parallel window, duplicate systems linger.
- Without a fallback rule, tutors either retreat too quickly or wait too long.
- Without bridge retirement, temporary scaffolds become permanent infrastructure.
- Without verification, “cutover complete” becomes a declaration rather than evidence.
6. The Source of Truth Problem
Two systems create two possible answers to one question.
Which checking routine should Alicia use?
Which weekly plan should Emily update?
Which initiation rule should Faith follow?
If the answer is “whichever feels right today”, the cutover has not happened.
The learner needs one normal route.
The old route can remain available as fallback, but it should not remain an equal source of truth.
7. Name the Cutover Moment
A cutover should have a visible moment.
Not necessarily a dramatic ceremony.
A sentence is enough:
From this week, the rebuilt three-check routine is the normal Mathematics checking route. The seven-step checklist is fallback only and will be used only if the new routine fails the agreed accuracy floor.
That sentence changes authority.
8. The Old Route Needs a New Status
Before cutover, the old route was normal.
During transition, it becomes fallback.
After successful stabilisation, it becomes archive, reference or retired support.
The status change should be explicit.
If the old route remains physically and psychologically available in exactly the same way as before, the learner may continue routing uncertainty back through it.
9. Fallback Is Not Co-Equal Operation
A fallback exists for defined failure conditions.
It is not a second normal route.
Denise should not choose moderate timing every time full-paper work feels difficult.
She should use the rebuilt performance route unless the agreed rollback condition appears.
Faith should not return to the light prompt every time uncertainty appears.
The prompt returns only if the new self-initiation route produces the specific collapse signal defined in advance.
10. Parallel Running Can Be Useful
For a short period, old and new routes can coexist deliberately.
Alicia may complete the new three-check routine and, once per week, compare it against the older full checklist to confirm that important error detection has not disappeared.
Emily may use the new peak-week reallocation rule while keeping the old planning sheet available for one review cycle.
Faith may self-initiate first while the light prompt card remains face down on the table as fallback.
Parallel running can reduce transition risk because the learner has a protected bridge back to the known-good route.
11. Parallel Running Is Expensive
Two systems consume attention.
Two checklists consume time.
Two planning methods create translation work.
Two help rules make learner judgement harder.
Parallel running therefore needs an expiry condition.
Run two systems only long enough to learn whether one can safely become authoritative.
12. Do Not Compare Forever
A tutor can become addicted to comparison.
One more week.
One more sample.
One more paper.
At some point, the cost of operating two systems becomes larger than the information gained.
The Adoption Gate should already have established that the new route is strong enough to become standard.
The Cutover should define what additional operational evidence is needed before the fallback can shrink.
13. Big-Bang Cutover
Sometimes the route can change at once.
The old vocabulary-card format is retired and the new retrieval format begins on Monday.
The old homework capture sheet disappears and the new single capture list becomes authoritative.
Big-bang cutover can be sensible when:
- the new route is well tested;
- the old and new routes conflict if used together;
- the change is easy to reverse;
- the protected invariant is easy to monitor;
- the learner understands the change;
- the cost of dual operation is high.
14. Phased Cutover
Other transitions should move in stages.
Faith may first self-initiate familiar tasks, then changed tasks, then unfamiliar tasks.
Denise may use the rebuilt timing route on one paper section, then two, then the full paper.
Beatrice may use principle-based paragraph planning in one genre before it becomes the normal route across all writing jobs.
Phased cutover is useful when:
- the route contains separable components;
- failure in one component should not destabilise the whole learner;
- the new route needs evidence across increasing difficulty;
- the learner needs time to internalise control;
- the tutor wants to preserve rollback at each stage.
15. Strong Coupling Changes the Cutover
Some routines cannot be changed one part at a time.
A study system may couple priority selection, task capture and weekly review tightly enough that changing only one creates confusion.
An examination routine may link paper order, skip rules, time checkpoints and checking budget.
When components are strongly coupled, the tutor may need a coordinated cutover.
The trade-off is clear:
phased change lowers the size of each step; coordinated change reduces the period of operating incompatible pieces.
16. The Compatibility Bridge
Sometimes the learner needs a temporary bridge between routes.
The old visible paragraph frame becomes two small planning questions.
The old parent reminder becomes one end-of-week audit.
The old tutor prompt becomes a self-prompt card.
The old full checklist becomes a weekly audit sample rather than an every-question routine.
These bridges help capability move from the old architecture into the new one.
17. Temporary Bridges Need Retirement Dates
Bridges are dangerous because they work.
A self-prompt card works.
A parent audit works.
A comparison checklist works.
Once a bridge works, adults may see no reason to remove it.
But temporary bridges consume attention and can preserve dependence.
Write the retirement condition when the bridge is introduced.
18. The Cutover Window
The cutover window begins when the new route becomes primary and ends when ordinary use no longer depends on the old route or temporary bridge.
Inside the window, the tutor watches:
- the protected invariant;
- learner initiation;
- support demand;
- transfer across changed conditions;
- workload and attention cost;
- old-route fallback frequency;
- new defects;
- school or home returns.
The window is not another full trial.
The route has already earned adoption.
The cutover window tests operational continuity.
19. Fallback Frequency Is a Powerful Signal
How often does the learner need the old route?
Once in the first week?
Every lesson?
Only on unusual tasks?
Fallback frequency tells the tutor whether the new route is becoming self-sustaining or whether authority transferred on paper before capability transferred in practice.
Repeated fallback is not automatically failure.
It is evidence that the transition is incomplete.
20. The Old Route Should Become Harder to Access
During cutover, the old route can remain available without remaining equally convenient.
The old checklist moves out of immediate view.
The prompt card stays face down.
The parent stops nightly reminders and retains only the scheduled review.
The tutor stops offering the old method pre-emptively.
Accessibility matters here.
Necessary access supports should not be withdrawn merely to make the new route look more independent. The tutor is retiring avoidable legacy control, not legitimate access conditions.
21. The Parent Is Part of Cutover
A tutoring route can change while the home system stays old.
The tutor stops reminding.
The parent continues reminding.
The tutor gives learner ownership.
The parent still checks every decision.
The learner now operates two authority systems.
Parent communication should therefore state what support is ending, what remains, and what signal would justify temporary restoration.
22. School Evidence Can Confirm Cutover
The strongest route is not one that works only inside tuition.
School work can show whether the new routine travels.
Does Alicia use the shorter checking route on a teacher-marked paper?
Does Beatrice preserve flexible organisation in school writing?
Does Denise use the rebuilt timing route when the tutor is absent?
External return is strong cutover evidence because it removes some of the tutor’s hidden support.
23. The Learner Should Know What Has Changed
Cutover should not be a secret adult management event.
The learner should be able to say:
This is the route I use now. This is why we changed it. This is the old route I only use if this specific failure happens. This is the part I now own myself.
That explanation is evidence of metacognitive ownership.
24. Cutover Failure Mode: Shadow Systems
The official route changes.
The old route survives unofficially.
Emily says she uses the new priority system but keeps an old hidden to-do list because she trusts it more.
Beatrice says she plans flexibly but quietly reconstructs the old template every time.
Faith says she self-initiates but waits until the tutor’s expression confirms the first move.
Shadow systems are not automatically dishonesty.
They can reveal that the new route has not yet earned trust or that the learner still depends on an old control.
25. Ask What the Shadow System Is Solving
Do not simply ban the old route.
Ask why it survives.
- Does it provide reassurance?
- Does the new route miss an important function?
- Does the learner lack confidence in self-monitoring?
- Is the new routine too abstract?
- Does the old system hold information the new one lost?
- Is the tutor declaring cutover before the learner is ready?
The survival of a shadow route is evidence about transition design.
26. Cutover Failure Mode: Dual Authority
The tutor says one thing.
The parent says another.
The old checklist says one rule.
The new routine says another.
The learner now spends cognitive capacity deciding which authority to follow.
Resolve authority explicitly.
One route is primary.
One route is fallback.
The fallback activates only under defined conditions.
27. Cutover Failure Mode: Bridge Permanence
The bridge was meant to last two weeks.
Three months later it remains.
The learner now believes the bridge is part of the normal route.
This is why every bridge needs a retirement owner and a finish condition.
The Drift Check should later ask whether the bridge quietly became permanent.
28. Cutover Failure Mode: Premature Retirement
The opposite error is retiring the old route too quickly.
The fallback disappears after one good week.
Then the learner meets a harder condition and the new route fails with no clean recovery path.
Fallback should remain available until the new route has survived the conditions the learner is reasonably expected to face.
29. Cutover Failure Mode: Old Route by Convenience
The new route requires the learner to think.
The old route is easier for the tutor.
So under time pressure the tutor quietly returns to the old routine.
This is not evidence-based fallback.
It is convenience drift.
Cutover succeeds only when the adults change their own behaviour too.
30. Cutover Failure Mode: Learner Nostalgia
The learner may prefer the old route because it was familiar.
Familiarity reduces cognitive friction.
That does not automatically mean the old route is educationally stronger.
Listen to the learner’s reasons.
If the new route adds useless burden, redesign it.
If the new route merely asks the learner to carry a control the old route carried externally, some friction may be the point.
31. Cutover and the Learning Budget
Running old and new systems consumes extra capacity.
That is why the parallel window must stay bounded.
The Learning Budget asks what temporary comparison, audit or bridge work is worth funding during transition.
Do not keep duplicate routines merely because nobody has decided to remove one.
32. Cutover and Intervention Cost
The new route may have passed its trial and still create transition cost.
The learner has to remember a new sequence.
The parent has to stop an old support.
The tutor has to resist familiar prompts.
The old and new evidence systems may overlap for a short period.
The Intervention Cost remains active during the handoff.
33. Cutover and the Decision Record
A consequential cutover deserves a compact record.
- new primary route;
- old fallback route;
- protected invariant;
- cutover date or event;

This allows later review to distinguish a designed transition from informal drift.
34. Cutover and the Learning Claim
Performance during the cutover window should preserve support provenance.

If Faith self-initiates while the prompt card remains visible, that is stronger than tutor prompting and weaker than fully internal self-initiation.
The cutover moves support conditions.

35. Cutover and Rollback
Rollback capacity is strongest early in cutover.
The old route still exists.
The learner still remembers it.
The tutor still has the evidence.
As bridges retire and old routines disappear, rollback becomes more expensive.
That is acceptable only after the new route has earned enough operating history.
36. Cutover and the Drift Check
The first Drift Check after cutover is unusually important.
The tutor should compare three things:
- the route that passed the Adoption Gate;
- the route that was actually cut over;
- the route now being lived in ordinary practice.
Those three can diverge quickly if bridges, exceptions and old habits are not retired deliberately.
37. Cutover and Temporary Override
Exceptions still occur after cutover.
A difficult school week.
A new notation.
An examination tomorrow.
Use the Temporary Override when the new route remains sound but the present condition temporarily changes.
Do not reactivate the whole old route merely because one local exception appears.
38. Learning Cutover
Learning concerns understanding, retrieval, representation and reasoning.
A learning cutover transfers authority from an old support or representation to a rebuilt one.
The protected invariant is the underlying relation the learner must still understand and use.
The old representation may remain available briefly for fallback, but the new representation becomes the first route.
39. Studying Cutover
Studying concerns planning, allocation, retrieval, resources and self-management.
A studying cutover often transfers control rather than content.
The learner becomes the source of truth for priorities.
The parent moves from nightly manager to scheduled auditor.
The tutor reviews the learner’s allocation rather than making it in advance.
The cutover is complete when the learner-owned system survives real week variation without the old adult-owned system quietly returning.
40. Training Cutover
Training concerns reliability under repetition, variation, delay and pressure.
A training cutover moves the normal practice condition.
Blocked becomes mixed.
Untimed becomes timed.
Immediate feedback becomes delayed self-check first.
The old condition remains available only if the protected capability destabilises beyond the agreed threshold.
41. Education Cutover
Education places the learner inside school stages, curricula and assessment environments.
An education cutover may move tuition from heavy Repair into Alignment, from exam-season performance emphasis back to ordinary learning, or from transition scaffolding into the new school stage’s normal operating route.
The protected invariant is school operability.
The learner should not lose the ability to participate in current education while the tutoring architecture changes.
42. Improvement Cutover
Improvement concerns the whole loop from observation to diagnosis, repair, practice, performance and review.
A mature cutover moves more of that loop into the learner.
The tutor no longer initiates every review.
The learner identifies the weak link, chooses a practice route, tests it and explains whether it worked.
The new normal is not merely a better tutor routine.
It is a more learner-owned improvement system.
43. Class 0 · Homework Helper Cutover
Class 0 works nearest to task completion and routine.
A Class 0 cutover transfers ordinary task management from adult-owned to learner-owned control.
Old route: tutor reminds, opens, checks and closes.
New route: learner locates, begins, marks uncertainty and closes; tutor audits only where evidence justifies it.
Class 0 cutover rule: the new normal should reduce adult operating load without reducing completion reliability below an acceptable floor.
44. Class 1 · Explainer Cutover
The Explainer’s cutover moves authority from tutor explanation toward learner reconstruction.
The old explanation remains available if the learner encounters a genuinely new representation.
But ordinary work begins with the learner generating the relation.
Class 1 cutover rule: clarity becomes normal only when the learner can reproduce the organising relation without the tutor delivering it first.
45. Class 2 · Drill Builder Cutover
The Drill Builder changes normal practice conditions.
A rebuilt mixed-practice route becomes the default once execution and selection remain stable enough.
Blocked work becomes fallback for specific unstable components rather than the learner’s ordinary environment.
Class 2 cutover rule: normal practice should reflect the capability the learner now needs to carry, not the easier condition that originally built it.
46. Class 3 · Diagnostic Tutor Cutover
The Diagnostic Tutor may cut over from an older learner model to a better explanatory model.
The old hypothesis is not deleted.
It becomes archived prior information.
The new hypothesis becomes the active route only after it better predicts learner behaviour and intervention response.
Class 3 cutover rule: change the active explanation without erasing the history that may matter if the pattern returns.
47. Class 4 · Route Designer Cutover
The Route Designer changes sequence, priority and handoff between learning phases.
A route-design cutover must identify which sequence now governs the learner’s time.
Class 4 cutover rule: once the new sequence becomes authoritative, stop funding the old sequence except where fallback evidence specifically requires it.
48. Class 5 · Performance Coach Cutover
The Performance Coach moves the learner into representative performance routines.
The cutover may move moderate timing into full-paper timing, or one recovery rule into the learner’s normal examination behaviour.
Class 5 cutover rule: performance realism becomes normal only when the learner can preserve the protected capability under the new demand without tutor-controlled rescue.
49. Class 6 · Learning Architect Cutover
The Learning Architect may transfer authority across several linked systems at once.
Study planning, parent communication, subject allocation and review routines may all change.
The danger is indefinite coexistence: old and new architectures remain half alive.
Class 6 cutover rule: name the new source of truth for each control, retire duplicated ownership, and preserve only the interfaces needed for safe fallback.
50. The Tutor Classification Model Still Governs the Handoff
