The new route was supposed to help.

For a while, it looked as though it did.

Emily rebuilt her study week around a new planning system. The first fortnight looked organised. By the third week, she was spending more time maintaining the planning system than doing the learning the system was meant to support.

Faith reduced tutor prompts aggressively because independence was the goal. She became quieter, not more independent. The tutor had removed support faster than the learner had acquired the control that support used to carry.

The easy response is to keep patching the new route.

Add another checklist.

Add another explanation.

Add another rule.

Add another week.

Add another exception.

Sometimes that is exactly how a tutoring system becomes harder to understand while the learner becomes harder to help.

A Rollback is the deliberate return to the most recent verified stable tutoring state when a newer route has become meaningfully less reliable, so the learner can recover on known-good ground while the failed change remains available as evidence for a better rebuild.

Rollback is not punishment.

Rollback is not surrender.

Rollback is not telling the learner that progress was fake.

5. Known Good Is an Evidence Statement

“The old method worked” is too vague.

Worked how?

For what task?

Under what support?

At what difficulty?

For how long?

A trustworthy rollback point can be described:

Now the tutor knows what is being restored and what problem still remains after restoration.

6. A Checkpoint Makes Rollback Possible

If the tutor never records stable states, rollback becomes guesswork.

8. Preserve the Failed State Before Restoring the Stable One

A failed route contains information.

Save the marked paper.

Save the timetable.

Save the error pattern.

Save the prompt count.

Save the completion-time change.

Save the learner’s explanation of what felt different.

If the tutor restores too quickly without preserving evidence, the system may repeat the same failed experiment later because nobody remembers exactly what failed.

9. Rollback Is Not Failure

A trial can be well designed and still reveal that the new route is worse.

That is not wasted teaching.

The system paid for information.

The professional failure would be continuing a worse route because adults are embarrassed to reverse it.

10. Rollback Is Not Regression

Regression is a loss of capability.

12. Rollback Versus Persistence

Persistence is useful when the route is difficult but viable.

Rollback is useful when the route itself is producing meaningful instability.

The tutor must distinguish hard work from broken work.

  • timing pressure that reliably damages accuracy beyond the agreed floor;
  • practice that improves familiar execution while method selection worsens;
  • an adopted routine that repeatedly requires large temporary overrides to remain usable;
  • a route whose cost now exceeds its learning receipt;
  • evidence that the learner is becoming less able to operate when the tutor is absent.

15. The Rollback Equation

Changed Route + Meaningful Deterioration + Preserved Evidence + Verified Prior State + Minimum Restoration + Stability Check + Rebuild Plan = Responsible Rollback.

Each term prevents a different failure.

  • Without meaningful deterioration, rollback can become avoidance.
  • Without preserved evidence, the failure teaches nothing.

19. Choose the Rollback Depth

How far back?

Far enough to restore the relevant stability.

No farther.

  • If one prompt layer failed, restore one layer.
  • If time pressure exposed fragile execution, remove or reduce the clock—not the entire topic.
  • If mixed practice overwhelms unstable execution, return temporarily to blocked practice—not to first exposure.
  • If a study system became too complex, restore the simpler schedule that still handled real weeks—not an obsolete childhood routine.

20. The Minimum Necessary Rollback

The same principle that governs intervention size governs rollback size.

Return only enough support, structure, simplicity or time to restore the intended learning operation.

Do not overcorrect an overcorrection.

Mixed practice is powerful when the learner can already execute the candidate methods well enough to practise selection.

25. Rollback After Parent Support Becomes Permanent Infrastructure

A parent begins checking every evening during a difficult month.

The learner stabilises.
