Bolt 11 — Why Usain Bolt Still Needed a Coach

If Bolt was the fastest man in the world, what could a coach possibly tell him?

Usain Bolt ran faster than anyone had ever run 100 metres.

He held world records.

He won Olympic and world titles.

So why did he still need Glen Mills?

That question is more important than it first appears.

Because if exceptional performance automatically produced perfect self-knowledge, the best athlete in the world should eventually become his own complete coach.

But elite sport rarely works that way.

And education should pay attention to why.

Some things are hard to see from inside the performance

Bolt once put the idea very simply when discussing his 100 metres.

He said the first 30 metres, his start and acceleration were areas he still needed to improve, and added that there were small things his coach could see that he could not see himself.

That is an extraordinary sentence from an extraordinary performer.

It does not mean Bolt lacked bodily awareness.

It means perspective matters.

The athlete experiences the sprint from inside.

The coach sees the sprint from outside.

Those are not redundant viewpoints.

Glen Mills made the invisible visible

In an interview about coaching Bolt, Mills described mechanical problems in Bolt’s sprinting that affected posture, his lower back, hips and hamstrings.

The coaching response was not simply verbal.

Mills and his team filmed training, slowed the footage down, broke the movement apart and showed Bolt what was happening.

They used drills and strength work to change the underlying mechanics.

That is important because the athlete’s feeling of the movement was not sufficient by itself.

Video created another representation of the same event.

The coach could point to it.

The athlete could compare what the movement felt like with what the movement actually looked like.

That comparison improves calibration.

A coach is not merely someone who knows more

We sometimes imagine coaching as a hierarchy.

The coach knows.

The athlete obeys.

But modern research on coach-athlete relationships paints a richer picture.

High-quality coaching depends on communication, co-orientation, trust, responsiveness and a shared understanding of what is being worked on.

The coach is valuable partly because they bring another observation system into the loop.

Not because the athlete knows nothing.

Not because the coach is infallible.

Because two differently positioned observers can notice different things.

The coach can also change the practice environment

A strong coach does more than point out mistakes after they happen.

They can design situations that make particular weaknesses easier to expose and improve.

Sports-science research on practice environments emphasises that coaches influence learning through the structure of training tasks, the information available to athletes and the interactions that occur during practice.

That means the coach helps answer:

  • What should we isolate?
  • What should we repeat?
  • What should we vary?
  • When should feedback arrive?
  • When should the athlete solve it alone?
  • What counts as improvement?

Those are teaching questions too.

Now imagine a very strong student

A student is already scoring 90%.

Do they still need a teacher?

Possibly more selectively than before.

The teacher may notice that the remaining errors are not random.

Perhaps transfer fails only when the wording becomes unfamiliar.

Perhaps the learner’s explanations are correct but inefficient.

Perhaps they solve routine problems beautifully but become rigid when there is more than one valid approach.

The student may not see those patterns because each individual error feels isolated.

The teacher sees the sequence.

That is the educational equivalent of standing beside the track rather than inside the sprint.

But the teacher does not own the learner

There is an equally important warning.

The existence of blind spots does not mean external judgement should always override internal experience.

The athlete can feel fatigue the coach cannot directly feel.

The student can know that an answer was blank because time expired rather than because the concept was unknown.

The external observer has blind spots too.

That is why the strongest system is not:

Teacher over student.

It is:

Learner + teacher + task + evidence + repeated time.

A good coach should eventually increase independence

This is where Bolt becomes particularly useful for education.

The purpose of coaching is not to create an athlete who can perform only when the coach is constantly correcting every movement.

The purpose is to develop performance that survives competition, when the athlete must execute for themselves.

Education has the same problem.

If a student can solve a problem only while a teacher continuously points out each error, we may have produced good supported performance without secure independent performance.

The teacher should therefore do two jobs at once:

  • Improve the learner’s current performance.
  • Improve the learner’s ability to notice and correct future performance themselves.

The second job is easy to forget.

Why this matters for education

We often think the strongest student is the one who needs the least feedback.

A better idea is that the strongest learner may need increasingly precise feedback.

Not more noise.

Not more praise.

Not constant correction.

Higher-resolution information about the remaining gap between current and better performance.

Great performance does not eliminate the need for another perspective. Sometimes it makes the quality of that perspective even more important.

Usain Bolt still needed a coach because being inside the performance and seeing the performance are different jobs.

Students need to learn both.
