Bolt 10 — Why Experts Keep Measuring Themselves

If you are already excellent, why keep checking?

There is a strange thing about expertise.

The better people become, the less we imagine they should need measurement.

Surely the expert already knows.

Surely the elite athlete can simply feel it.

Surely the experienced musician, surgeon, engineer or teacher no longer needs constant feedback.

In many high-performance fields, the opposite is closer to the truth.

Experts keep measuring because the next improvement is often hidden inside details that ordinary performance can afford to ignore.

Expertise is not just repeating what you already do well

Research on expert performance has long emphasised practice that is targeted at improving specific aspects of performance rather than simply accumulating more hours.

One overview of deliberate practice describes training that focuses on particular tasks, uses feedback, allows evaluation and creates repeated opportunities to refine behaviour.

That sounds obvious until we compare it with how many students revise.

They often repeat what feels comfortable.

Read the notes again.

Redo familiar questions.

Practise the chapter they already like.

Experts tend to have a more difficult relationship with practice.

They look for what is not yet good enough.

One sports study makes this difference unusually clear

Researchers studying Gaelic football players allowed expert and intermediate performers to choose how they practised two kicking skills.

The experts tended to spend more practice on the skill they were weaker at.

The intermediate players tended to practise the skill they were already stronger at.

The experts also described their chosen practice as more effortful and less enjoyable.

That result does not mean every expert always behaves this way.

But it gives us a useful picture.

To improve intelligently, you first need enough resolution to know what deserves practice.

Self-monitoring appears in sport research for a reason

Research on self-regulated learning in athletes separates processes such as planning, effort, self-monitoring, reflection and self-efficacy.

In one study of 272 individual-sport athletes, self-monitoring was specifically associated with deliberate-practice activity.

That matters because improvement requires a loop:

Observe → locate → practise → test → compare → adjust

If the observation is poor, the practice target may be poor.

If the target is poor, effort can be enormous and improvement surprisingly small.

Bolt did not need to pretend every part of his race was equally strong

Usain Bolt could hold world records and still talk openly about the first part of his 100 metres as an area needing improvement.

He described his first 30 metres, his start and his acceleration as things he needed to keep working on.

That is not a contradiction.

Overall excellence can coexist with local weakness.

In fact, experts may become better at identifying local weakness precisely because their overall model of the performance is more developed.

The beginner sees:

“I ran fast.”

The expert can begin to see:

“The start was late, the acceleration was acceptable, posture improved around 30 metres, and the second half was strong.”

Same race.

Different resolution.

Education often stops measuring too early

A student gets 85%.

Everybody is happy.

Move on.

But what does the 15% contain?

Random slips?

A repeated conceptual weakness?

A problem that only appears under transfer?

A pacing issue?

Perhaps nothing serious.

Perhaps the 85 is genuinely strong enough for the current purpose.

But expert development asks a different question:

What is the next limiting factor?

That question can still matter at 85, 95 or 99.

Measurement is not obsession

There is an important boundary here.

More measurement is not automatically better.

Athlete monitoring can become noisy. Students can become anxious if every action turns into a score. Teachers can collect more data than they can interpret.

The purpose is not surveillance.

The purpose is useful feedback.

Experts need the right measurement at the right resolution for the question they are trying to answer.

And practice is not the whole story

It is also important not to turn the idea into a simplistic claim that enough deliberate practice explains every difference in expertise.

A major sports meta-analysis found deliberate practice explained a meaningful but limited proportion of performance differences overall, and much less variation among already elite performers.

Human performance is multi-factorial.

Practice matters.

So do physiology, development, opportunity, coaching, task design, environment, health and many other factors.

Calibration should help us see the system that actually exists, not replace it with a motivational slogan.

What expert-like studying might look like

A learner preparing for an examination could ask:

  • Which skill currently limits my score most?
  • What evidence says that?
  • Can I isolate it for practice?
  • Can I test it without help?
  • Can I perform it when the question changes?
  • Did the weakness actually improve?
  • What becomes the next limiting factor?

This is much closer to high-performance training than simply doing another full paper and hoping the total rises.

Why this matters for education

The deepest lesson from expertise may not be “practise more.”

It may be:

Learn to see what your performance is telling you, then practise the thing that actually needs changing.

Experts keep measuring because the measurement helps choose the next action.

Students need that skill too.

Not so that school becomes a laboratory of endless scores.

So that learners gradually become capable of locating their own next step.
