Two students can write the same answer and reveal very different learning.
One may have understood the relationship, chosen a sound route and made a small execution error. Another may have copied a familiar pattern without understanding why it applies.
If we look only at the final line, we can teach the wrong thing next.
The answer tells us where the attempt ended. The working tells us how the learner got there.
A wrong answer can contain strong reasoning
Suppose a Mathematics student models the problem correctly, chooses an appropriate method and then makes one arithmetic error near the end.
The answer is wrong. The teaching response should still recognise that most of the route is sound.
Reteaching the whole topic may add work without addressing the actual weakness. The useful repair may be execution accuracy or checking.
A correct answer can contain fragile learning
The reverse is equally important.
A learner can obtain the correct answer because the question looks like the example, because the chapter heading supplies the method, because a tutor has just demonstrated the route, or because the numbers happen to make an unsuitable method work.
Correctness matters. But one correct response under highly supportive conditions is not the same evidence as an independent response on an unfamiliar task.
The process reveals the first weak link
When the tutor can see the working, the error becomes a chain rather than a verdict.
In English, the chain might be passage understanding → evidence selection → inference → answer construction. In Mathematics it might be question interpretation → representation → relationship → method → execution → checking. In Science it might be changed condition → observation → concept → mechanism → conclusion.
The place where the mark disappears may be late in the chain. The earliest useful weak link may sit earlier.

Working also reveals independence
A neat final answer does not show how many prompts were required to produce it.
Did the learner identify the method? Did an adult tell them which formula to use? Did the tutor point to the line that needed correction? Did the student know when to check?
The more of the route the learner can carry independently, the stronger the evidence that the capability is becoming portable.
But process is not an excuse to ignore outcomes
There is a danger in overcorrecting.
Good reasoning that repeatedly produces inaccurate answers still needs repair. Examinations award marks to performance. A student eventually has to convert understanding into a correct, complete and timely response.
The point is not “process instead of answer”. It is process plus answer.
Process helps us choose what to teach. Outcome tells us whether the whole chain worked.
Parents can preserve the working at home
If a child brings home a difficult worksheet, resist the urge to erase every wrong route before anyone else sees it.
The original attempt may be useful evidence. Circle where help was given. Keep one reattempt separate from the correction. Ask the child where they think the route changed.
You do not need to turn home into a diagnostic laboratory. Simply avoid polishing away all the information before the tutor can see it.
