Why Distractors Work
A distractor is an option designed to be attractive for a particular wrong reason.
Typical distractors use:
- a true Science fact that does not answer the question;
- a common misconception;
- a wrong unit;
- final value instead of change;
- cause and effect reversed;
- one correct keyword attached to the wrong relationship;
- a familiar picture position rather than actual sequence;
- an overgeneralised rule.
When a learner knows why an option is wrong, they become less dependent on simply recognising the correct one.
Step 1: Read the Stem Before the Options
Before looking at A, B, C or D, identify:
- command or question job;
- target property;
- changed condition;
- important evidence;
- scientific model likely to be active.
This reduces the chance that the options will pull the learner toward the wrong topic detail.
Step 2: Predict the Kind of Answer
Question:
“Which statement best explains why the metal spoon handle became warmer?”
Before reading options, predict:
“The answer should involve hotter-to-colder heat transfer and metal being a good conductor.”

“Does this option sound right?”

- A confuses material with temperature state.
- B reverses the heat model and treats cold as something that flows.
- D confuses heat with temperature.
Original MCQ 2: Matter
100 mL of water is poured from a tall narrow cylinder into a wide bowl without spilling. Which statement is correct?
A. The volume decreases because the water level is lower.
B. The volume remains 100 mL although the water level changes.
C. The mass becomes zero because the shape changes.
D. The water becomes a gas because it spreads out.
Best answer: B.
The correct option preserves the liquid property and conservation condition.

Plant Q has many damaged roots. Both plants receive the same amount of water and light. Q wilts more. Which explanation is best?
A. Damaged roots reduce the plant’s ability to absorb sufficient water.
B. Damaged roots make the leaves heavier.

Best answer: A.
The option uses the relevant root function and respects the controlled conditions.

Sequence and function both support the same choice.
True Fact, Wrong Job
Question:
“Why does the shadow become larger when the object is moved closer to the torch while the screen remains fixed?”
Option A: “Light travels in straight lines.”
That is true, but may be incomplete if another option connects the changed position to the blocked-light geometry more fully.
MCQ reasoning should prefer the option that best answers the job, not merely the first true statement.
Keyword Distractors
Question contains “roots”.
Distractor contains “absorb water”.
But the question asks how roots help prevent uprooting.
The relevant function is anchoring.
Keyword matching without task control creates predictable errors.
Final Value Distractors
Two cups both start at 70°C.
Cup A ends at 52°C.
Cup B ends at 60°C.
Question: Which had the greater temperature decrease?
A common distractor may be “60°C” because it is the larger visible number.
The correct reasoning calculates:
- A decrease = 18°C;
- B decrease = 10°C.
Wrong-Unit Distractors
Object volume from displacement is 17 mL.
An option “17°C” should be rejected immediately because the unit does not match volume.
Unit checking can eliminate options without solving every detail.
Sequence Distractors
Digestive options may reorder organs.
Use the route:
Mouth → Gullet → Stomach → Small Intestine → Large Intestine.
Do not choose by picture location alone.
Cause-and-Effect Reversal
Correct:
root damage → reduced water absorption → wilting.
Distractor:
wilting → roots become damaged.
Check which event is stated to occur first.
Observation vs Inference Distractors
Question:
“Which statement is an observation?”
A. The plant lacked water.
B. The leaves were drooping.
C. The roots could not absorb enough water.

The other options interpret cause or condition.
Fair-Test Distractors
Question asks which method tests wrapping material fairly.
A good option should keep:
- same water amount;
- same starting temperature;
- same cup type;
- same time;
- same surroundings;
while changing wrapping material.
Any option that changes several conditions is weaker.
Missing-Information Distractors
Question:
“Cup A ends at 52°C and Cup B at 60°C. Which cooled more?”
If initial temperatures are not given, a distractor may encourage choosing A because 52 is lower.
The scientifically correct response may be:
Cannot be determined from the information given.
Overclaim Distractors
One test shows foam reduces cooling more than cloth.
Distractor:
“Foam is always the best insulator.”
Correcter option:
“Foam reduced cooling more than cloth under the tested conditions.”
Absolute Words
Watch:
- always;
- never;
- all;
- only;
- must;
- best.
These words are not automatically wrong, but they demand stronger evidence.
Use Elimination Deliberately
For each option, mark mentally:
- wrong fact;
- wrong relationship;
- irrelevant;
- incomplete;
- fits.
This transforms elimination from intuition into reasoning.
When Two Options Look Correct
Ask:
- Which one answers the exact command?
- Which one uses all relevant conditions?
- Which one is scientifically more complete without overclaiming?
- Which one matches the evidence directly?
Often one option is generally true while the other is specifically correct.
