Primary 4 Science Learning Guide | Question Reading, Command Words and Answer Precision

A Primary 4 pupil can know the Science and still answer the wrong question.

The child sees the word shadow and writes “light travels in straight lines”. The child sees root and writes “absorbs water”. The child sees temperature and starts subtracting numbers.

Sometimes the keyword activates the correct model. Sometimes it activates the right topic but the wrong job.

Strong Science answering begins before the first scientific sentence is written. It begins by reading the task precisely enough to know what the answer must do.

Quick Answer: What Should the Learner Read For?

Before answering, identify five things:

  1. Command: state, describe, explain, compare, predict, suggest or identify.
  2. Target: what object, process, measurement or relationship the question is asking about.
  3. Condition: what is true, what changed and what stayed the same.
  4. Evidence: which diagram, value, observation or statement matters.
  5. Boundary: how broad or narrow the answer should be.

A useful eduKate routine is:

COMMAND → TARGET → CONDITION → EVIDENCE → MODEL → ANSWER → CHECK

This is a teaching routine, not an official MOE marking formula.

The Current Primary 4 Science Context

The current MOE Primary Science syllabus places Primary 4 work around plant and human systems, matter, light, heat and scientific practices such as observation, measurement and investigation.

Schools can phrase questions differently. The purpose here is not to impose one answer template but to make the reading decisions visible.

Wait, What? The Topic Is Not the Question

Topic: Heat.

Question A: “State the final temperature.”

Question B: “Calculate the temperature decrease.”

Question C: “Explain why the water cooled.”

Question D: “Compare the cooling of the two cups.”

Question E: “Predict what happens if the foam is removed.”

All five are Heat questions. They require different answers.

Command Word: State

State usually asks for a direct answer, fact, name or value.

Question: “State the organ that carries swallowed food from the mouth to the stomach.”

Answer: The gullet.

A long explanation may be unnecessary unless the question asks for one.

Command Word: Describe

Describe asks what is observed, what changes or what pattern is shown.

Table: shadow width decreases from 18 cm to 14 cm to 11 cm as distance increases.

Good description: “The shadow width decreased as the object was moved farther from the torch across the tested positions.”

The description reports the pattern. It does not need to explain why unless asked.

Command Word: Explain

Explain asks for the scientific reason or mechanism.

Question: “Explain why the metal spoon handle became warmer.”

Good answer: “The soup was hotter than the spoon, so heat was transferred from the soup to the metal spoon. Metal conducts heat well, so heat was transferred along the spoon to the handle and its temperature increased.”

The answer includes the scientific link, not only the observation.

Command Word: Compare

Compare asks the learner to consider two or more cases using the same property.

Weak: “Cup A is 52°C. Cup B has foam.”

Better: “Cup B had the higher final temperature and the smaller temperature decrease than Cup A.”

A comparison must keep the property aligned across the cases.

Command Word: Predict

Predict asks what is expected if the scientific relationship continues or if a condition changes.

Prediction should not be random:

“If the same object is moved slightly farther from the torch while the rest of the arrangement is unchanged, the shadow is expected to become smaller, following the observed relationship.”

Prediction uses evidence or mechanism.

Command Word: Suggest

Suggest often allows a reasonable answer supported by the information and scientific knowledge.

Because more than one answer may be possible, the learner should state a clear reason.

Question: “Suggest one reason Plant Q wilted more.”

If the question states that Q has many damaged roots, a strong suggestion is reduced water absorption through the damaged root system.

Command Word: Identify

Identify asks for the correct part, factor or item.

The task may be solved from labels, sequence, function or evidence.

Do not add unrelated explanation when the question only needs identification.

Read the Target Noun

Question: “Which temperature is higher?”

Question: “Which temperature change is greater?”

These targets differ by one word.

Primary Science precision often depends on small nouns:

  • mass;
  • volume;
  • temperature;
  • temperature change;
  • shadow width;
  • distance from source;
  • organ function;
  • observation;
  • conclusion.

Underline or mentally mark the target property before calculating or explaining.

Read the Reference Points

“The object moved closer.”

Closer to what?

In Light, the distinction between:

  • object closer to source;
  • object closer to screen;

can completely change the geometry.

Relational language requires both endpoints.

Read the Time Window

“After 10 minutes” and “over the first 10 minutes” are not always the same job.

One may ask for the value at a time point.

The other may ask for the change across an interval.

When a table contains multiple time readings, identify exactly which interval belongs to the question.

Read the Starting Condition

A temperature question may be impossible to interpret correctly without the starting value.

Final values:

  • A = 50°C;
  • B = 55°C.

Which cooled more?

You cannot know unless the initial temperatures are also given.

Question reading is therefore evidence selection.

Read What Stayed the Same

In investigations, controlled conditions matter because they limit alternative explanations.

Question: “Two identical cups contain the same volume of water at the same starting temperature. One is wrapped in foam.”

Those words are not filler. They tell you that cup type, water amount and starting temperature are controlled, allowing wrapping to become the main changed condition.

Do Not Ignore Words Like “Same”, “Only”, “Except” and “All”

Small logical words can change the answer.

Same: establishes a control or equality.

Only: narrows the claim.

Except: reverses selection.

All: broadens the required set.

Science questions are language problems before they become Science problems.

Original Question-Reading Case: Matter

“A pupil pours 100 mL of water from a narrow measuring cylinder into a wide bowl without spilling. Describe what happens to the water’s shape and volume.”

The command is describe.

The targets are shape and volume.

Answer: “The water changes shape to fit the bowl, but its volume remains 100 mL.”

Do not answer only “It gets lower” because that describes water height rather than both requested properties.

Original Question-Reading Case: Plants

“Plant B has many damaged roots. Both plants receive the same amount of water. Explain why Plant B wilts more.”

Command: explain.

Changed condition: root damage.

Control: same water amount.

Target effect: wilting.

Relevant model: roots absorb water.

Answer: “Because many roots are damaged, Plant B is less able to absorb sufficient water, so it wilts more.”

Original Question-Reading Case: Heat

Question A: “State the final temperature of Q.” → 60°C.

Question B: “Calculate the temperature decrease of P.” → 18°C.

Question C: “Compare the temperature decreases.” → P decreased 18°C; Q decreased 10°C; P decreased more.

Question D: “Which cup retained heat better under the tested conditions?” → Q, if the only relevant difference is the insulation condition given elsewhere.

Original Question-Reading Case: Digestive System

“Identify the part that receives food after the stomach and absorbs digested food.”

The function clue and sequence clue both point to the small intestine.

Do not rely on organ shape alone.

Keyword Guessing

A child sees “roots” and writes “absorb water”.

But the question may ask:

“How do roots help prevent the plant from being easily uprooted?”

The relevant function is anchoring, not water absorption.

Topic keywords are entry points, not final answers.

Question Stem and Answer Choices

In multiple-choice work, read the stem fully before testing the options.

Do not choose an answer simply because it contains a familiar scientific word.

For each option, ask:

  • Does it answer the exact command?
  • Does it match the given conditions?
  • Does it use the correct relationship?
  • Does it contradict any evidence?

Eliminate by Relationship, Not Vocabulary

Two options can contain correct Science facts. Only one may fit the set-up.

Example:

A shadow becomes larger because the object moved closer to the source.

Option A: “Light travels in straight lines.”

Option B: “Moving the object changed the region of light paths blocked before they reached the screen.”

Both relate to Light. Option B directly connects the changed condition to the observed effect.

Answer Length Should Match the Job

One-word identification questions do not need paragraphs.

Explanation questions may require a complete causal chain.

Comparison questions often need both cases in one sentence.

Prediction questions often need expected outcome plus reason.

Long answers are not automatically better. Complete answers are better.

Use Exact Scientific Nouns

Weak: “It went there and it got hotter.”

Better: “Heat was transferred from the hot water to the cooler metal spoon, so the spoon’s temperature increased.”

Precise nouns keep reference clear.

Answer the Whole Job

Question: “State and explain which material is better for a pan handle.”

A pupil who states “plastic” but gives no reason completes only half the task.

A pupil who explains poor conduction but never identifies the material also misses part of the job.

Multi-part commands should be answered multi-part.

Common Question-Reading Errors

  • answers the topic rather than the command;
  • misses one requested property;
  • uses final value when asked for change;
  • ignores “same” conditions;
  • uses “closer” without reference point;
  • explains when asked to describe;
  • describes when asked to explain;
  • copies all data instead of selecting relevant evidence;
  • answers only one part of a two-part question;
  • chooses an option because it contains a familiar keyword.

Original Practice Set

Question 1

“State the organ that transports swallowed food to the stomach.” What is the command and answer?

Question 2

“Describe how shadow width changes as object–torch distance increases.” Should the answer include mechanism?

Question 3

“Explain why the shadow forms.” What additional job is required beyond describing darkness on the screen?

Question 4

A table gives initial and final temperatures. The question asks “which cup cooled more?” What quantity should be compared?

Question 5

“The object moved closer.” Why is this insufficient in a shadow question?

Question 6

A plant question says both plants receive the same amount of water. Why is “same” important?

Question 7

A multiple-choice option contains a true fact but does not connect to the changed condition. Should it be selected?

Question 8

A question asks “state and explain”. How many jobs are present?

Practice Answers

1. Command: state. Answer: the gullet.

2. Not unless requested. The task is to describe the pattern.

3. The scientific mechanism: the object blocks straight-line light paths from reaching part of the screen.

4. Temperature decrease for each cup.

5. Distance requires reference points; closer to source and closer to screen are different changes.

6. It controls water amount, making root condition or another stated variable easier to interpret as the relevant change.

7. No. A true fact can still be irrelevant to the question.

8. Two: identify the answer and give the scientific reason.

The 10-Second Question Check

Before writing:

  • circle or name the command;
  • underline the target property;
  • mark the changed condition;
  • find the evidence source;
  • decide whether one sentence or a causal chain is needed.

This can become an internal routine with practice.

Transfer Test: Same Concept, Different Command

Use one set-up and ask five questions:

  • state;
  • describe;
  • explain;
  • compare;
  • predict.

If the pupil writes the same answer to all five, command-word control needs repair.

Every topic depends on question reading.

Plant questions change between function, consequence and evidence.

Digestive questions change between identification, sequence and explanation.

Matter questions distinguish mass, volume, shape and conservation.

Light questions depend on precise distance relationships.

Heat questions distinguish value, change, direction and mechanism.

Question reading is therefore not exam technique added at the end. It is part of scientific reasoning.
