Feedback can be correct and still fail.
A teacher writes:
“Explain more.”
The pupil reads it, nods, turns the page—and makes the same mistake next week.
The problem is not always the quality of the comment. The problem may be what happens after the comment is received.
Feedback becomes learning only when the learner can turn it into a specific next action, test that action, and verify that the repaired skill works again later.
This guide belongs to the Primary 4 Science Learning Hub. Its job is deliberately narrow: P4 feedback uptake and feedforward. It does not own PSLE feedback timing, nor does it replace the existing Diagnostic Revision Planning guide, which decides how to allocate study effort.
Why Feedback Uptake Matters
Formative assessment becomes useful when feedback helps the learner understand the gap between current performance and the desired quality, then take a next step that closes that gap. Strong science feedback is therefore specific enough to act on and connected to the scientific process or representation being improved.

Wait, What? Reading Feedback Is Not Acting on Feedback
Feedback:
“You have not explained why the shadow changed.”
Passive response:
reads the comment.
Active response:
“I need to add the light-path mechanism linking the changed distance to the changed shadow size.”
The second creates a next action.

Feedback Should Name the First Weak Link
Weak feedback:

Better:

Now the learner can preserve what works and repair only the missing component.
Translate Comments Into Verbs
Feedback becomes actionable when it can be rewritten as a verb.

Do Not Convert Feedback Into a Topic Rewrite
One missing unit does not require revising the whole Heat chapter.
One wrong reference point does not require redoing every Light worksheet.
Repair should match the size of the weak link.
Micro-Repair
A micro-repair is the smallest practice action that tests whether the feedback has been understood.
Examples:
- write three measurements with units;
- label three distance endpoints;
- calculate three temperature changes;
- convert three observations into observation/inference pairs;
- repair one fair-test table.
Retest Immediately
After the micro-repair, give a fresh but similar item.
Do not ask:
“Do you understand now?”
Ask the performance to demonstrate it.
Retest Example | Units
Feedback:

Repair:
write 58°C.
Retest:
new question asks for 45 mL volume.
If the learner includes mL without prompting, the repair is beginning to transfer.
Retest Example | Root Function
Feedback:
used anchoring when question asked about wilting.
Repair:
match consequence to function.

new question asks why roots help resist uprooting.
The learner should now switch functions rather than repeat water absorption.
Delayed Retest
Immediate success can be short-lived.
After a delay, test again with:
- new numbers;
- new object;
- rotated diagram;
- different wording;
- mixed-topic context.
Delayed success gives stronger evidence that feedback changed the capability.
Transfer Retest
Feedback on a metal spoon explanation should eventually transfer to:
- metal rod;
- metal railing;
- cold bottle in warm room.
The surface changes; the heat-transfer model remains.
Close the Feedback Loop
A feedback item should eventually move to one of three states:
- Closed: repaired and transferred.
- Still developing: works in familiar case but not transfer.
- Reopened: misconception returns after delay.
This prevents the same comment from appearing forever without diagnosis.

Teacher feedback can identify:
- concept error;
- process error;
- representation weakness;
- language precision;
- evidence gap;
- practical-method problem.
The learner still needs to translate it into an action.
Feedback From Peers
Peer feedback should use criteria.
Weak:
“This is confusing.”
Better:
“Your arrow is present, but I cannot tell whether it means heat transfer or movement.”
Now the repair is explicit.
Feedback From Self-Assessment
A rubric reveals:

Observation:

Feedback From Wrong MCQ Answers
Do not only mark the correct option.
Classify the error:
- keyword match;
- unit oversight;
- true-but-irrelevant fact;
- wrong calculation;
- misconception;
- missed negative word.
The next practice should target the error type.
Feedback From Open-Ended Answers
Mark where the failure occurs:
- command;
- scientific model;
- evidence;
- causal link;
- language;
- boundary.
One label can be more useful than a full rewritten answer.
Feedback From Projects
Feedback can target milestones:
- question too broad;
- pilot reveals measurement problem;
- data table missing baseline;
- artefact hides the evidence;
- conclusion too broad.
The project itself supplies the next action.
Feedback From Portfolios
A portfolio review may reveal:
“You have many correct Heat answers but no unfamiliar transfer example.”
Feedforward:
add a delayed changed-surface task before calling Heat secure.
Feedback Should Not Attack Identity
Avoid:
“You are careless.”
Prefer:
“Three measurements are missing units. Add units at the moment you record each value.”
Target behaviour and reasoning, not personality.
Feedback Should Not Be So Large That Nothing Happens
A page covered in comments can leave the learner unable to choose a first move.
Prioritise:
- first weak link;
- highest-transfer repair;
- one action;
- one retest.
Feedback Priority
Repair first when the issue:
- causes repeated errors;
- affects many topics;
- blocks later reasoning;
- reflects a stable misconception;
- creates unsafe practical behaviour.
High-Transfer Feedback
Feedback:
“Always name the property before comparing.”
This can improve:
- mass vs volume;
- final temperature vs change;
- shadow width vs distance;
- plant height vs leaf count.
High-transfer feedback is especially valuable.
Low-Transfer Feedback
Feedback:
“Spell ‘gullet’ correctly.”
Useful, but narrow.
It should not consume the same revision time as a causal misconception.
Feedback and Motivation
Useful feedback says:
- what already works;
- what one thing needs repair;
- what next attempt will test the repair.
This makes progress concrete without hiding difficulty.
Feedback and Independence
Over time, the tutor should reduce:
- full correction;
- specific cue;
- general cue;
- self-generated criterion;
- independent self-correction.
Feedback should eventually make itself less necessary.
