When a child says “metal is best because metal is strong”, the error may be smaller than it sounds.
The child may know what strength means. The first broken link may be that suitability is being treated as a permanent property of the material rather than a relationship between an object’s job and the properties that job requires.
This repair map isolates that first broken idea, assigns one minimal task, then retests the corrected rule with a different object or test.
Repair Map 1 | “Cup Is a Material”
First broken idea: Object and material categories are mixed.
Minimal repair: Sort eight cards into object/material: cup, spoon, window, strap, glass, metal, plastic, rubber.
Changed-example retest: “Is umbrella an object or material? Is fabric an object or material?”
Secure sign: The child keeps category labels stable across new examples.
Repair Map 2 | “Transparent Is a Material”
First broken idea: Material and property are mixed.
Minimal repair: Build four columns: object / material / property / function. Place “window / glass / transparent / see through”.
Changed-example retest: “Strap / rubber / flexible / bend around object.”
Secure sign: The child can translate a new example into the four-part structure.
Repair Map 3 | “Hard Means Strong”
First broken idea: Everyday adjectives are replacing the tested property.
Minimal repair: Show a load-support result and ask, “Which evidence actually tells us strength?”
Changed-example retest: Give two anonymous samples with load data only. Ask which is stronger.
Secure sign: The child refers to load evidence rather than material name or feel.
Repair Map 4 | “Soft Means Flexible”
First broken idea: Feel is being substituted for bending evidence.
Minimal repair: Compare two strips in a bending test. Ask the child to describe only what the test shows.
Changed-example retest: Remove material names and give bend-distance results.
Secure sign: Flexibility is inferred from bending without breaking.
Repair Map 5 | “Strongest Means Best”
First broken idea: One property is being treated as universally desirable.
Minimal repair: Compare two jobs: bridge support and bendable strap. Ask whether the same property must dominate both.
Changed-example retest: “Which matters more for a window: strength or transparency, if the stated job is seeing through?”
Secure sign: The child begins from function, not a favourite property.
Repair Map 6 | “Flexible Means Weak”
First broken idea: Strength and flexibility are being placed on one opposite scale.
Minimal repair: Draw two axes: strength and flexibility. Place hypothetical samples independently on each.
Changed-example retest: Give Sample A: high load, bends far. Ask whether both properties can be high.
Secure sign: The child treats them as separate properties.
Repair Map 7 | “Transparent Means Waterproof”
First broken idea: Two properties that sometimes co-occur are being treated as the same property.
Minimal repair: Use one transparent-but-absorbent example and one opaque-waterproof example from prepared data.
Changed-example retest: “Can a clear material absorb water? Can an opaque material be waterproof?”
Secure sign: The child demands separate tests for the two properties.
Repair Map 8 | “Floats Means Waterproof”
First broken idea: Water-related observations are being merged.
Minimal repair: Create two columns: float/sink test and water-absorption test. Ask what each column can answer.
Changed-example retest: “A sponge floats at first and absorbs water. Which two properties must stay separate?”
Secure sign: The child no longer infers waterproofness from floating.
Repair Map 9 | “Plastic Always Floats”
First broken idea: Material stereotype is replacing observation.
Minimal repair: Give a table where an anonymous plastic object sinks. Ask which should be recorded: expectation or observed result.
Changed-example retest: Use a metal object that floats in the supplied data.
Secure sign: The child follows the specific evidence.
Repair Map 10 | “The Test Is Unfair” With No Reason
First broken idea: “Fair test” is a memorised label rather than a causal comparison idea.
Minimal repair: Ask the pupil to complete: “The comparison is weaker because ___ also changed.”
Changed-example retest: Waterproofness test uses different waiting times. Ask for the specific repair.
Secure sign: The child names the condition and proposes how to keep it similar.
Repair Map 11 | “Repeat It Three Times and It Becomes Fair”
First broken idea: Repetition is being used to repair method validity.
Minimal repair: Give one badly designed comparison repeated ten times. Ask whether the same confounding difference remains.
Changed-example retest: Different sample thicknesses are used repeatedly. Ask what must be fixed before repetition becomes useful.
Secure sign: The child repairs the method first.
Repair Map 12 | “Most Yeses Means Best Material”
First broken idea: Property count is replacing requirements.
Minimal repair: Give a five-property table and a one-property job. Ask which column matters.
Changed-example retest: Change the job and keep the same table. The best material should change if the required property changes.
Secure sign: The child filters by function instead of counting positive cells.
Repair Map 13 | “There Must Be One Winner”
First broken idea: Scientific decision tasks are assumed to guarantee one perfect option.
Minimal repair: Give three materials where each fails one essential requirement.
Changed-example retest: Ask, “If all three properties are essential, which material is fully suitable?”
Secure sign: The pupil can answer “none” and explain which requirement each option fails.
Repair Map 14 | “Helpful Means Essential”
First broken idea: Requirements are not prioritised.
Minimal repair: Mark requirements E for essential and H for helpful before looking at materials.
Changed-example retest: A cover must be waterproof; transparency is only helpful. Ask whether an opaque waterproof sample can still be suitable.
Secure sign: Essential requirements control the first decision.
Repair Map 15 | “Waterproof Means Strong”
First broken idea: One test is being used to infer an untested property.
Minimal repair: Make the child label every result with the single property it directly supports.
Changed-example retest: Give a bending result and ask whether transparency is known.
Secure sign: The child says the untested property cannot be determined.
Repair Map 16 | “The Result Must Match My Expectation”
First broken idea: Prediction is being allowed to overwrite observation.
Minimal repair: Put prediction and result in separate boxes. Record both even when they disagree.
Changed-example retest: Ask what to write if the expected floating object sinks.
Secure sign: The pupil records the observed result and treats the disagreement as something to investigate.
Repair Map 17 | “Same Material Means Same Property Result”
First broken idea: Material stereotype is being treated as stronger than the tested sample.
Minimal repair: Use anonymous samples first, reveal material names later.
Changed-example retest: Present two objects made of the same named material but with different shapes or structures and ask which result should be used for the stated test.
Secure sign: The child follows the specific sample evidence.
Repair Map 18 | “A Longer Answer Is Stronger”
First broken idea: Explanation length is replacing relevance.
Minimal repair: Take a three-property answer and cross out every property not required by the job.
Changed-example retest: Ask for the shortest complete explanation for why transparent material suits a viewing window.
Secure sign: The child can stop after the relevant property-function link.
