A wrong answer is not a topic. It is evidence about one broken link.
When a Primary 3 pupil says “a robot is living because it moves”, the problem is not necessarily that the child has forgotten everything about living things. The first broken link may be much smaller: the child is using one surface clue as a complete definition. If we respond by reteaching the whole chapter, we may bury the actual error under more information.
This Misconception Repair Map takes a different route: wrong answer → first broken idea → one minimal repair → changed-example retest. The aim is to repair the smallest thing that is wrong, then immediately check whether the correction transfers.
The Repair Rule
- Capture the exact wrong answer.
- Name the first broken idea. Do not diagnose three problems when one will explain the error.
- Give one repair task.
- Change the surface. Use a different organism, picture or wording.
- Retest without hints.
A repair is not complete because the child can repeat the corrected sentence. It is complete when the child applies the corrected idea to a new example.
Repair Map 1 | “It Is Living Because It Moves”
Wrong answer: “Object X is living because it moves.”
First broken idea: Movement is being treated as a sufficient definition of life.
Minimal repair: Put three cards side by side: toy car, robot, animal. Ask, “Which of these can move? Which are living? What does that tell you about movement as a rule?”
Changed-example retest: “A door moves when pushed. Is it living?”
Secure sign: The pupil says movement alone is insufficient and asks for other living-characteristic evidence.
Repair Map 2 | “The Balloon Grew”
Wrong answer: “The balloon is living because it grew bigger.”
First broken idea: Enlargement is being confused with biological growth.
Minimal repair: Compare a balloon before/after air is added with a plant before/after several days. Ask what caused the size increase in each case.
Changed-example retest: “A sponge becomes larger after absorbing water. Is that biological growth?”
Secure sign: The pupil distinguishes added material from growth of a living organism.
Repair Map 3 | “The Plant Is Non-Living Because It Cannot Walk”
First broken idea: Locomotion is being treated as a requirement for life.
Minimal repair: Ask the pupil to name living characteristics shown by a plant: growth, response, reproduction and biological needs.
Changed-example retest: “A tree stays rooted in one place for years. Can it still be living?”
Secure sign: The pupil no longer uses ability to move from place to place as the deciding criterion.
Repair Map 4 | “The Wooden Chair Is Living Because It Came From a Tree”
First broken idea: Origin is being confused with present state.
Minimal repair: Make two columns: “came from living material” and “is living now”. Put wood, paper, cotton fabric and a living plant into the table.
Changed-example retest: “Paper came from trees. Is the sheet of paper living now?”
Secure sign: The pupil evaluates the present object, not only its origin.
Repair Map 5 | “Everything Living Is Either a Plant or an Animal”
First broken idea: The broad living-world model has only two categories in the child’s mind.
Minimal repair: Rebuild the four-group map: plants, animals, fungi, bacteria. Add one example under each.
Changed-example retest: “Where do yeast and bacteria belong?”
Secure sign: The child uses four broad groups without forcing fungi or bacteria into plant/animal categories.
Repair Map 6 | “Mushroom Is a Plant Because It Grows From the Ground”
First broken idea: Habitat/location is being used as the classification rule.
Minimal repair: Put plant, mushroom and stone photos on soil. Ask, “If all three can be found on or in the ground, can location alone classify them?”
Changed-example retest: “Mould grows on bread. Does growing on food make it a plant?”
Secure sign: The pupil places mushroom/mould in fungi and stops using location as the deciding rule.
Repair Map 7 | “Yeast Cannot Be a Fungus Because It Does Not Look Like a Mushroom”
First broken idea: Scientific group membership is being reduced to visual similarity.
Minimal repair: Compare mushroom, mould and yeast. Ask, “Can one group contain members that look very different?”
Changed-example retest: Show two very different bird species. Ask whether different appearance prevents shared group membership.
Secure sign: The pupil separates group structure from superficial appearance.
Repair Map 8 | “Bacteria Are Non-Living Because I Cannot See Them”
First broken idea: Visibility to the unaided eye is being treated as a criterion for life.
Minimal repair: Ask, “Does a microscope create the organism, or only help us observe it?”
Changed-example retest: “If a tiny organism can be seen only with a microscope, can it still be living?”
Secure sign: The child treats instruments as extending observation, not creating reality.
Repair Map 9 | “That Tiny Speck Must Be Bacteria”
First broken idea: Small size is being used as sufficient identification evidence.
Minimal repair: Show several tiny dots from different sources—dust, pixel, microscope image, ink. Ask which ones can be identified from size alone.
Changed-example retest: “A tiny dot is shown without labels. Can you name it as bacterium?”
Secure sign: The pupil asks for suitable identification evidence.
Repair Map 10 | “No Flower in the Photo Means Non-Flowering”
First broken idea: Not observed is being confused with does not happen.
Minimal repair: Use a flowering plant photographed before flowering. Ask whether one moment can prove the plant never flowers.
Changed-example retest: “A hibiscus photo shows leaves only. Can flowering status be decided from the photo alone?”
Secure sign: The pupil says flowering status may remain unknown without flower-production evidence.
Repair Map 11 | “Green Means Plant”
First broken idea: One visual feature is being treated as a universal group rule.
Minimal repair: Ask for one green non-plant example and one non-green plant example from trusted materials.
Changed-example retest: “An organism is green. Can you conclude it is a plant?”
Secure sign: The pupil recognises that colour alone is insufficient.
Repair Map 12 | “Whale Is a Fish Because It Lives in Water”
First broken idea: Habitat is being substituted for animal-group characteristics.
Minimal repair: Put whale, fish and frog under the heading “can be found in water”. Ask whether that shared habitat makes them one animal group.
Changed-example retest: “A seal lives in water. Does that make it a fish?”
Secure sign: The child stops using habitat as the master animal-group rule.
Repair Map 13 | “Bat Is a Bird Because It Flies”
First broken idea: Behaviour is being used instead of relevant group characteristics.
Minimal repair: Compare bird, bat and butterfly. All may fly. Ask which clue better distinguishes birds.
Changed-example retest: “Animal X flies but has no feathers. Is flight enough to call it a bird?”
Secure sign: The child uses feathers when shown/stated and treats flight as weak evidence.
Repair Map 14 | “Butterfly Is an Insect Because It Flies”
First broken idea: Final group is correct but reason is wrong.
Minimal repair: Ask, “Would this reason also classify a bird as an insect?” If yes, the rule is not discriminating enough.
Changed-example retest: Use an unfamiliar six-legged animal that cannot fly. Ask for the broad group.
Secure sign: The pupil can hold the group constant while changing the weak reason.
Repair Map 15 | “Cute / Not Cute” Classification
First broken idea: Subjective preference is being confused with observable scientific characteristic.
Minimal repair: Compare “cute/not cute” with “has feathers/does not have feathers”. Ask which rule another observer could apply consistently.
Changed-example retest: Ask the child to propose one yes/no rule for four unfamiliar organisms.
Secure sign: The rule is observable and consistent.
Repair Map 16 | “I Know the Answer but Cannot Say Why”
First broken idea: Recognition exists, but evidence link is missing.
Minimal repair: Require one sentence with two parts: “I classify it as ___ because the evidence shows ___.”
Changed-example retest: Remove the species name and ask for a new classification from a supplied characteristic.
Secure sign: The child can explain without relying on familiarity.
Repair Map 17 | “Cannot Determine Means I Failed”
First broken idea: The child believes every Science question must end with a definite label.
Minimal repair: Give three questions: one with enough evidence, one with partial evidence, one with none. Ask the pupil to decide which can be answered and which should remain uncertain.
Changed-example retest: “A plant photo has no flower information. Flowering or non-flowering?”
Secure sign: The child can choose “not enough evidence” confidently when appropriate.
Repair Map 18 | “More Facts Means Better Answer”
First broken idea: Quantity is being confused with relevance.
Minimal repair: Give four true facts about an organism and ask which one directly answers the classification question.
Changed-example retest: Ask for the shortest complete answer to a bird-classification question.
Secure sign: The child selects the decisive evidence and stops.
The Repair Decision Tree
- Wrong final group? Check group knowledge and classification basis.
- Right group, wrong reason? Repair evidence selection.
- Right evidence, overclaim? Repair certainty and evidence limits.
- Works only on familiar species? Remove the name and retest transfer.
- Works only with pictures? Give a text-only description.
How Teachers Use This Map
Record the pupil’s exact sentence before correcting it. The wording often reveals the broken link. “Whale is a fish because it lives in water” is not primarily a whale-fact problem; it is a classification-rule problem. “Butterfly is an insect because it flies” is not primarily an insect-name problem; it is a reason-quality problem.
Choose the smallest repair that changes the rule. Then change the example. If the same mistake returns, the repair has not transferred yet.
How Parents Use This Map
Do not ask ten new questions after one mistake. Ask one diagnostic question: “What made you decide that?” Then choose one counterexample or one changed example. The purpose is to improve the child’s rule, not exhaust the child with quantity.
Five-Minute Repair Routine
- Write the wrong answer exactly.
- Underline the faulty rule.
- Show one counterexample.
- State the corrected rule in the child’s own words.
- Test a different example with no hints.
