Primary 3 Science Learning Guide | Materials Diagnostic Worked Answers & Error Diagnosis

Materials questions are rarely difficult because children have never heard the words “strong”, “flexible” or “waterproof”. They are difficult because the pupil must match the right evidence to the right property and then connect that property to the object’s job.

Wait, What? A Correct Material Name Can Still Earn the Wrong Reason

A pupil may choose the right sample by chance and then justify it with the wrong property. That answer is fragile. The repair target is not the final choice; it is the missing relationship between test result → property → function.

Answer Set 1 | Object, Material, Property or Use?

  1. Plastic: material.
  2. Window: object or part of an object/system, not a material.
  3. Transparent: property.
  4. Keeps rain out: function/use requirement.
  5. Cup made from glass: cup = object; glass = material.
  6. Rubber strap: strap = object; rubber = material; flexible = property; bending around an object = function.

Error diagnosis: If the pupil confuses object and material, stop before doing suitability questions. Build four boxes: object, material, property, function.

Answer Set 2 | Strength or Flexibility?

  1. Supports the greatest load → strength.
  2. Bends the farthest without breaking → flexibility.
  3. Yes, one sample can be stronger but less flexible because the two tests measure different properties.
  4. Chair leg supporting weight → strength.
  5. Bendable band → flexibility.
  6. A bending test does not prove strength because it does not test load support.
  7. A load test does not prove flexibility because it does not test bending without breaking.

Marking logic: If the pupil says “strong because it bends far”, the issue is not vocabulary recall. It is evidence-to-property mapping.

Answer Set 3 | Waterproof or Transparent?

  1. Does not absorb water → waterproofness is supported.
  2. Printed word can be seen clearly through sample → transparency.
  3. Yes, a transparent material can still absorb water; the two properties require separate evidence.
  4. Yes, a waterproof material can be opaque.
  5. Clear rain shield → transparency + waterproofness.
  6. A transparency test cannot answer waterproofness because it tests visibility, not water absorption.

First weak link: If one property is inferred from the other, use paired counterexamples: transparent but not waterproof; waterproof but opaque.

Answer Set 4 | Float or Sink

  1. P remains at surface → P floated.
  2. Q reaches bottom → Q sank.
  3. “Heavy always sinks” is unreliable because observed float/sink behaviour depends on the specific object and test; mass impression alone is not enough.
  4. Floating does not prove waterproofness because float/sink and water absorption are different questions.
  5. Sinking does not prove weakness because strength was not tested.
  6. If the task requires floating, choose P based on the provided result.
  7. Density calculations are not required for the core P3 float/sink outcome; the task is observation and comparison.

Answer Set 5 | Test-to-Property Matching

  1. Flexibility → bending test.
  2. Strength → load/support test.
  3. Waterproofness → water-absorption test.
  4. Transparency → visibility-through-material test.
  5. Float/sink → place sample in water and observe.
  6. Waterproofness test → cannot justify “strongest”. Wrong test.
  7. Bending test → cannot justify “transparent”. Wrong test.

Core rule: A well-run wrong test is still the wrong test for the question.

Answer Set 6 | Fairer Comparisons

  1. Different water amounts weaken a waterproofness comparison because the samples are not tested under the same condition.
  2. Different thickness can change bending behaviour, so material is no longer the only important difference.
  3. Pushing one object under water changes the method; it is not the same simple float/sink test as gently placing it on the surface.
  4. For strength, keep sample dimensions/support arrangement and loading method comparable where practical.
  5. Repeating an unfair test reproduces the same design problem; repetition cannot repair a bad comparison.
  6. Sample size/shape can affect the observed behaviour, so comparable samples make the material comparison clearer.

Answer Set 7 | Relevant Property or Distractor?

  1. Window visibility → transparency.
  2. Rain cover keeping water out → waterproofness.
  3. Strap bending → flexibility.
  4. Shelf supporting load → strength.
  5. A true property can still be wrong if it does not explain the required function.

Error diagnosis: If the pupil names every property in the table, teach evidence selection. The strongest answer uses the smallest set that fully explains the job.

Answer Set 8 | Two-Property Decisions

Given A = waterproof, rigid, transparent; B = waterproof, flexible, opaque; C = absorbs water, flexible, transparent:

  1. Foldable rain cover → B because flexible + waterproof.
  2. Clear window panel, flexibility irrelevant → A because transparent and waterproofness does not harm the function.
  3. Clear flexible waterproof cover → none satisfies all three.
  4. If every property is essential and none meets all three → “none is fully suitable” is the scientifically honest conclusion.

Answer Set 9 | Trade-Offs

  1. If both samples are strong enough for the load and slight bending is required, the moderately strong flexible material may be the better overall choice.
  2. If transparency and waterproofness are both essential and no sample has both, neither sample is fully suitable.
  3. “Most good properties” is weak because irrelevant properties do not help the required function.
  4. Essential property = must-have for the stated job. Helpful property = useful but not required.
  5. If strength was not tested or stated, do not assume it.

Marking logic: Trade-off questions reward explicit priorities. “I choose B” is weaker than “I choose B if flexibility is essential and its strength is already sufficient for the stated load.”

Answer Set 10 | Same Evidence, Different Question

Evidence: A bends farther than B before breaking.

  1. Describe: A bent farther before breaking.
  2. Compare: A bent farther than B before breaking.
  3. Infer: A is more flexible under the test.
  4. Justify: A is more suitable for a bendable strap because it is more flexible.
  5. Cannot determine: strength, waterproofness, transparency or float/sink from this test alone.

Answer Set 11 | Contradictions and Overclaims

  • “Floated, therefore waterproof” → unsupported.
  • “Transparent, therefore flexible” → unsupported.
  • “Supported more load, therefore stronger under the test” → supported.
  • “Bent farther without breaking, therefore more flexible” → supported.
  • “All metal objects sink” → overgeneralisation.
  • “Plastic always floats” → overgeneralisation.

Answer Set 12 | Design the Investigation

Waterproofness: same-sized samples, same amount of water, same waiting time; observe absorption. Cannot infer strength.

Flexibility: comparable strips, same bending method; observe bend without breaking. Cannot infer waterproofness.

Transparency: same object/text behind samples, similar lighting and position; observe visibility. Cannot infer strength.

Float/sink: same container/water conditions, place samples similarly; observe float/sink. Cannot infer waterproofness.

The important answer is not a perfect laboratory procedure. It is a method that changes the relevant factor while keeping other important conditions reasonably similar.

Answer Set 13 | Unknown Materials

X supports high load, does not bend far, absorbs water. Y supports lower load, bends far, waterproof. Z transparent, waterproof, rigid.

  1. Strongest from the given load evidence → X.
  2. Most flexible → Y.
  3. Clear waterproof panel → Z.
  4. Irrelevant to a flexibility question → X’s load result, Z’s transparency, or waterproofness unless the specific function requires them.
  5. Material names are unnecessary because the conclusions come directly from the test evidence.

Anonymous samples are valuable because they prevent stereotypes such as “metal must be strongest” from replacing evidence.

Answer Set 14 | Error Diagnosis

  • “Glass is an object.” Object/material confusion.
  • “A window is transparent.” Usually imprecise: the material or pane is transparent; the object itself is not a material property category.
  • “The strongest material is always best.” Function/trade-off error.
  • “Waterproof test proves flexibility.” Test mismatch.
  • “Plastic usually floats, so this must float.” Stereotype overriding provided evidence.

The Three-Layer Marking Model

  1. Result: What happened in the test?
  2. Property: What scientific property does that result support?
  3. Function: Why does that property make the material suitable for the stated job?

If the pupil fails Layer 1, practise table/diagram reading. If Layer 1 is correct but Layer 2 fails, practise property vocabulary. If Layers 1 and 2 are correct but Layer 3 fails, practise property → function explanations.

Diagnostic Return Path

  1. Attempt without notes.
  2. Mark the exact failed relationship.
  3. Repair one distinction only.
  4. Redo the original item.
  5. Change the object but keep the property.
  6. Change the property but keep the table.
  7. Return later with mixed practice.

Mastery Check

  • The pupil separates object, material, property and function.
  • The pupil distinguishes strength from flexibility.
  • The pupil distinguishes waterproofness from transparency.
  • The pupil uses float/sink evidence without importing density calculations.
  • The pupil matches tests to properties.
  • The pupil recognises unfair comparisons.
  • The pupil ignores irrelevant true properties.
  • The pupil combines two properties when the function requires both.
  • The pupil can state “none fully suitable” when justified.
  • The pupil never assumes an untested property.
