Primary 3 Science Learning Guide | Materials Diagnostic Challenge Bank

This diagnostic challenge bank tests whether a Primary 3 pupil can move from an object’s job to the correct material property, read test evidence accurately and make a justified choice without relying on memorised material stereotypes.

The main teaching guides in this hub already explain common materials and properties. This page is a practice-and-diagnosis layer. It deliberately changes the objects, test formats and required functions so that pupils must identify the scientific relationship themselves.

The bank stays within the P3 materials scope: wood, metal, ceramic, rubber, glass, plastic and fabric; physical properties including strength, flexibility, ability to float or sink in water, waterproofness and transparency; and selection of suitable materials for particular uses.

How to Use This Challenge Bank

Use small sets. Ask for the answer, the evidence and the reason. Then label the error.

  • Property confusion: strength, flexibility, waterproofness or transparency is misidentified.
  • Object/material confusion: the pupil treats “bottle” or “window” as a material.
  • Function mismatch: a true property is given but does not explain the object’s job.
  • Test mismatch: the pupil uses evidence from the wrong investigation.
  • Evidence-selection error: the right data exist but the pupil reads the wrong column.
  • Trade-off error: the pupil assumes one material must be perfect when none satisfies every requirement.

Challenge Set 1: Object, Material, Property or Use?

  1. Classify “plastic” as object, material, property or use.
  2. Classify “window” in the same way.
  3. Classify “transparent”.
  4. Classify “keeps rain out”.
  5. A cup is made from glass. Which word names the object and which names the material?
  6. A strap is made from rubber because it needs to bend. Identify object, material, property and function.

Challenge Set 2: Strength or Flexibility?

  1. Sample A supports the greatest load before breaking. Which property?
  2. Sample B bends the farthest without breaking. Which property?
  3. Can a sample be stronger but less flexible than another? Explain.
  4. A chair leg must support a heavy load. Which property is most relevant?
  5. A bendable band must wrap around an object. Which property is most relevant?
  6. Why does a bending test not prove strength?
  7. Why does a load test not prove flexibility?

Challenge Set 3: Waterproof or Transparent?

  1. A sample does not absorb water. Which property is supported?
  2. A printed word can be seen clearly through a sample. Which property?
  3. Can a transparent material absorb water? Why must this be tested separately?
  4. Can a waterproof material be opaque?
  5. A clear rain shield must allow sight and keep water out. Which two properties matter?
  6. Why can a transparency test not answer a waterproofness question?

Challenge Set 4: Float or Sink

  1. Sample P remains at the water surface. What is the observation?
  2. Sample Q reaches the bottom. What is the observation?
  3. Why is “heavy always sinks” an unreliable rule?
  4. Why does floating not prove waterproofness?
  5. Why does sinking not prove a material is weak?
  6. A table says P floats and Q sinks. Which sample is supported for a task requiring a floating object?
  7. Why are density calculations unnecessary for this P3 comparison?

Challenge Set 5: Test-to-Property Matching

  1. Which test would you choose for flexibility?
  2. Which for strength?
  3. Which for waterproofness?
  4. Which for transparency?
  5. Which for float/sink behaviour?
  6. A pupil tests waterproofness and concludes Sample A is strongest. What is wrong?
  7. A pupil tests bending and concludes Sample B is transparent. What is wrong?

Challenge Set 6: Fairer Comparisons

  1. Two waterproofness samples receive different amounts of water. Why is the comparison weaker?
  2. One flexibility strip is twice as thick as the other. What problem can this create?
  3. One float test pushes the object underwater while another places it gently on the surface. Is that the same test?
  4. What should stay similar in a strength comparison?
  5. Why does repeating an unfair test not automatically make it fair?
  6. Give one reason sample size can matter when comparing material properties.

Challenge Set 7: Relevant Property or Distractor?

  1. A window material is transparent, waterproof and blue. Which property directly explains seeing through it?
  2. A rain cover is transparent, waterproof and smooth. Which property directly explains keeping water out?
  3. A strap is red, flexible and waterproof. Which property explains bending?
  4. A shelf is transparent, strong and waterproof. Which property explains supporting a load?
  5. Why can a true property still be a wrong answer?

Challenge Set 8: Two-Property Decisions

A table shows:

  • A: waterproof, rigid, transparent.
  • B: waterproof, flexible, opaque.
  • C: absorbs water, flexible, transparent.
  1. Which is best for a foldable rain cover?
  2. Which is best for a clear window panel if flexibility is irrelevant?
  3. Which is best for a clear flexible cover that must also be waterproof?
  4. If none satisfies all three required properties, what is the scientifically honest conclusion?

Challenge Set 9: Trade-Offs

  1. Material A is very strong but rigid. Material B is moderately strong and flexible. Which is better for a support that must bend slightly if both are strong enough for the load?
  2. A transparent sample is not waterproof; a waterproof sample is opaque. If both properties are essential, what conclusion should be made?
  3. Why is “choose the sample with the most good properties” a weak rule?
  4. What is the difference between an essential and a helpful property?
  5. If strength was not tested, should it be assumed?

Challenge Set 10: Same Evidence, Different Question

Evidence: Sample A bends farther than Sample B before breaking.

  1. Describe the result.
  2. Compare A and B.
  3. Infer which is more flexible.
  4. Justify which is more suitable for a bendable strap.
  5. State one property this test cannot determine.

Challenge Set 11: Contradictions and Overclaims

  • “The sample floated, therefore it is waterproof.” → unsupported.
  • “The sample is transparent, therefore it is flexible.” → unsupported.
  • “Sample A supported more load, therefore it is stronger under the test.” → supported.
  • “Sample B bent farther without breaking, therefore it is more flexible.” → supported.
  • “All metal objects sink.” → overgeneralisation.
  • “Plastic always floats.” → overgeneralisation.

Challenge Set 12: Design the Investigation

  1. Design a simple safe waterproofness comparison.
  2. Design a flexibility comparison.
  3. Design a transparency check.
  4. Design a float/sink observation.
  5. For each, state what should remain similar.
  6. For each, state what conclusion the test cannot support.

Challenge Set 13: Unknown Materials

Sample names are replaced with X, Y and Z. Use only the results:

  • X: supports high load, does not bend far, absorbs water.
  • Y: supports lower load, bends far, waterproof.
  • Z: transparent, waterproof, rigid.
  1. Which is strongest?
  2. Which is most flexible?
  3. Which could be chosen for a clear waterproof panel?
  4. Which evidence is irrelevant to a flexibility question?
  5. Why is the material name unnecessary for these conclusions?

Challenge Set 14: Error Diagnosis

  • “Glass is an object.” → object/material error.
  • “A window is transparent.” → may confuse object with material property; identify what part/material is being discussed.
  • “The strongest material is always best.” → function/trade-off error.
  • “A waterproof test proves flexibility.” → test mismatch.
  • “The result is correct because plastic usually floats.” → stereotype instead of evidence.

How to Read the Results

  • If the pupil repeatedly swaps properties, return to one-property tests.
  • If correct properties are named but the wrong option is chosen, practise property → function.
  • If tables cause errors, practise row/column tracking.
  • If real-world stereotypes override test data, use anonymous Sample A/B/C questions.
  • If every imperfect set produces a forced answer, practise “none fully suitable” and “more evidence needed”.
  • If fair-test details are weak, compare good and bad methods side by side.

Mastery Standard

Strong P3 materials mastery means the pupil can separate object, material, property and function; match each property to the correct evidence; compare fairly; combine multiple requirements; ignore distractors; and state when the available evidence is insufficient for a decision.
