Primary 3 Science Exam Question Map | Materials, Properties & Suitable Uses

Materials questions are not really about remembering which objects are made from plastic, metal or glass. They are about matching evidence to properties and properties to jobs.

A Primary 3 paper may present the same material concept as an MCQ, a results table, a fair-test question, a “choose the best material” item, a structured explanation, or a question asking what cannot be concluded. This map shows how to recognise the scientific job beneath the changing form.

Wait, What? The Correct Property Can Still Be the Wrong Answer

A material may be strong, flexible and waterproof. If the question asks why it is suitable for a window, strength may be true but irrelevant. The relevant property is transparency if the window’s job is to allow viewing.

The exam skill is therefore not “name a property”. It is select the property that explains the stated function.

Question Family 1: Identify the Material

These questions test whether the pupil distinguishes object from material.

  • cup = object;
  • glass = material;
  • strap = object;
  • rubber = material;
  • window = object/part;
  • transparent = property.

A frequent error is answering “window” when the question asks for the material, or answering “plastic” when the question asks for a property.

Question Family 2: Which Property Is Being Tested?

  • supports greater load before breaking → strength;
  • bends farther without breaking → flexibility;
  • does not absorb water → waterproofness;
  • can be seen through → transparency;
  • remains at the water surface → float behaviour.

MCQ trap: distractors may all be real properties, but only one matches the method or result shown.

Question Family 3: Read the Results Table

Table questions often test whether the learner follows the correct row and column rather than relying on expectations.

Example table:

  • A: strong, rigid, waterproof;
  • B: less strong, flexible, waterproof;
  • C: flexible, transparent, absorbs water.

A question about a foldable rain cover should focus on flexibility and waterproofness, not “which sample has the most good properties”.

Question Family 4: Choose the Most Suitable Material

These questions combine property knowledge with function.

Job → required property → evidence → choice.

Common jobs:

  • support → strength;
  • bendable band → flexibility;
  • rain cover → waterproofness;
  • window → transparency;
  • floating marker → float behaviour.

Question Family 5: Explain Why the Material Is Suitable

A one-word property may be insufficient when the command is “explain”. Link the property to the object’s job.

Weak: “Rubber is flexible.”

Stronger: “Rubber is flexible, so the strap can bend around the object without breaking.”

Question Family 6: Fair Test

These structured questions ask which conditions should stay similar or why a comparison is weak.

  • strength test → comparable sample dimensions/support and loading method;
  • flexibility test → comparable strips and same bending method;
  • waterproofness → same water amount and waiting time;
  • transparency → same viewing object and similar lighting;
  • float/sink → same container conditions and placement method.

The material is supposed to change if materials are being compared. Other important conditions should remain similar enough to make the result meaningful.

Question Family 7: Strength Versus Flexibility

A common question family deliberately makes one sample stronger and another more flexible.

If A supports more load but B bends farther without breaking:

  • A is stronger;
  • B is more flexible.

There is no contradiction. The tests measure different properties.

Question Family 8: Waterproof Versus Transparent

A transparent sample may absorb water. A waterproof sample may be opaque. The properties must be read separately.

A strong MCQ may ask which sample is suitable for a clear rain shield. Now two properties are essential: transparency + waterproofness.

Question Family 9: Float or Sink Without Density

At P3, questions can ask pupils to observe or compare whether objects float or sink. Density calculations are not required for the core task.

  • P floats; Q sinks → describe or compare the observed behaviour.
  • Which is suitable for a floating marker? → choose from the evidence.
  • Does floating prove waterproofness? → no; different property.

Question Family 10: What Does This Test Not Tell You?

Evidence-limit questions are especially useful because they test whether the child understands the scope of the investigation.

  • waterproofness test → does not prove strength;
  • bending test → does not prove transparency;
  • float test → does not prove waterproofness;
  • load test → does not prove flexibility.

A pupil who knows the property but overclaims another one has only partial understanding.

Question Family 11: Trade-Offs

Some stronger questions provide no perfect option.

If a clear foldable waterproof cover is needed and:

  • A = transparent + waterproof + rigid;
  • B = flexible + waterproof + opaque;
  • C = flexible + transparent + absorbs water;

then none satisfies all three essential requirements. “None is fully suitable” can be the correct scientific conclusion.

Question Family 12: Repair the Investigation

A flawed method may give different-sized samples, different water amounts or different testing distances. The pupil must identify the changed condition and propose a fairer comparison.

The key is not memorising the phrase “fair test”. It is identifying which uncontrolled difference could affect the result.

Question Family 13: Same Evidence, Different Command

Evidence: A bends farther than B before breaking.

  • Describe: A bent farther before breaking.
  • Compare: A bent farther than B.
  • Infer: A is more flexible.
  • Justify: A is more suitable for a bendable strap because it is more flexible.
  • Limit: strength is not determined by this result alone.

Question Family 14: True but Irrelevant Distractor

Exam MCQs may include a statement that is scientifically true but does not answer the question.

Example: A material is waterproof, transparent and red. Which property makes it suitable for a window? “Red” is true but irrelevant. “Waterproof” may be useful in real life but does not explain seeing through it. “Transparent” is the direct answer.

High-frequency P3 materials language includes material, property, strong, flexible, waterproof, transparent, float, sink, suitable, fair test, compare, evidence and function.

The word earns value only when the evidence and function match it.

MCQ Route

  1. Identify the object’s required job.
  2. Translate the job into a property.
  3. Read the correct test/result column.
  4. Eliminate true but irrelevant properties.
  5. Check whether one or multiple properties are required.

Structured-Question Route

  1. Name the relevant property.
  2. Use the result that supports it.
  3. Connect property to function.
  4. Do not add untested properties.

Table Route

  1. Find the property column requested.
  2. Track the correct sample row.
  3. Compare only the required evidence.
  4. If two properties are needed, check both columns before choosing.

Revision Drill: One Table, Six Questions

Use one materials-results table and ask:

  • Which is strongest?
  • Which is most flexible?
  • Which is suitable for a rain cover?
  • Which is suitable for a transparent shield?
  • Which test was unfair?
  • Which property cannot be determined?

This trains concept selection without needing six unrelated worksheets.
