Living-things questions change their clothes. The Science underneath often stays the same.
A Primary 3 pupil may learn that living things grow, respond and reproduce, that plants and animals can be classified, and that fungi and bacteria are living groups. Yet an exam question rarely asks only, “State the definition.” The same concept may appear as a multiple-choice question, a photograph, a table, a short structured question, a comparison, an inference task, or a “can you conclude?” evidence problem.
This page is a map of those question forms. It is not another question bank. The aim is to help the learner recognise the scientific job hidden inside different stems and representations.
Wait, What? The Question Can Change Without the Concept Changing
Consider the same idea: movement alone does not prove something is living.
- MCQ: Which observation best supports that Object X is living?
- Structured: Explain why movement alone is insufficient.
- Diagram: Robot moves toward light; plant grows over several days. Which evidence is stronger?
- Evidence limit: Object Y moves when touched. Can you conclude it is living?
Different formats. Same underlying distinction: one surface clue can mislead; several relevant living characteristics provide stronger evidence.
Question Family 1: Identify the Living Characteristic
These questions give an observation and ask which characteristic it demonstrates.
- plant becomes taller → growth;
- hamster population increases → reproduction;
- organism changes behaviour after a stimulus → response;
- living thing requires water, food or air → need for survival resources.
Keyword trap: Do not pick the word that merely appears in the passage. Pick the characteristic that explains the change shown.
Question Family 2: Living or Non-Living?
The examiner may provide one obvious clue and one hidden trap.
- a moving toy;
- a balloon becoming larger;
- a plant that does not move from place to place;
- a sensor-controlled light;
- a wooden table that came from a tree.
The scientific job is to separate surface similarity from biological characteristic.
Step-by-step route: What happened? Can a non-living thing also show that? What additional evidence is available? What conclusion is justified?
Question Family 3: Classification by Observable Characteristics
These questions ask the child to group living things using a stated or inferred basis.
Common forms include:
- Which two organisms belong in the same group?
- Which characteristic was used to form Group A and Group B?
- Which animal does not belong?
- How would you classify an unfamiliar example?
- Which yes/no question best separates the group?
The answer should use one consistent classification rule. Habitat, colour and size can be distractors when a more relevant biological characteristic is required.
Question Family 4: Broad Living Groups
P3 pupils work with four broad living groups: plants, animals, fungi and bacteria.
Exam-style stems may ask:
- Which group does yeast belong to?
- Why is a mushroom not classified as a plant?
- Which two examples are fungi?
- Why can bacteria be living even though individual bacteria cannot be seen unaided?
Answer trap: Do not classify from appearance alone. Mushroom, mould and yeast look different but can belong to fungi.
Question Family 5: Flowering or Non-Flowering Plant?
These questions test whether the pupil knows the grouping basis: flower production.
- MCQ: Which pair contains only flowering plants?
- Image question: Plant X shows flowers; classify it.
- Evidence-limit question: No flower information is given. Can flowering status be determined?
- Compare: State one similarity and one difference between fern and hibiscus at the classification level.
Green colour, leaf shape and habitat are often true but irrelevant clues.
Question Family 6: Animal Group Questions
Broad groups include amphibians, birds, fish, insects, mammals and reptiles.
High-value discriminating clues matter more than familiar species names:
- feathers → useful bird clue;
- six legs → useful insect clue;
- living in water → weak by itself;
- flying → weak by itself.
A whale and bat are classic distractors because habitat and movement can pull the child toward the wrong group.
Question Family 7: Observation Versus Inference
Some structured questions quietly test whether the pupil knows the difference between what is seen and what is concluded.
- “Plant grew 3 cm” → measured observation.
- “The plant grew” → inference from repeated measurements.
- “Animal has feathers” → observation if shown.
- “Animal is a bird” → classification inference.
When the question says “based on the observation”, keep the answer tied to what the evidence actually shows.
Question Family 8: Best Evidence
An MCQ may provide several true statements and ask which one best supports the conclusion.
Example: Which is stronger evidence that an unknown organism is living?
- it is green;
- it moves when pushed;
- it grows and reproduces;
- it is found outdoors.
The best answer uses the most relevant biological evidence, not the most noticeable clue.
Question Family 9: “Cannot Determine”
Strong questions sometimes give deliberately insufficient evidence.
- unknown object moves → living status not determined;
- plant photo without flower information → flowering status may not be determined;
- tiny speck in image → cannot call it bacterium without suitable evidence;
- unknown living organism → broad group may remain unknown.
A pupil who never chooses “not enough evidence” is likely overclaiming.
Question Family 10: Compare Two Examples
Comparison must use the same basis for both sides.
Strong: “Both are living things, but one is a fungus and the other is a plant.”
Weak: “The mushroom grows in soil while the plant is green.” Different bases make the comparison less useful.
Question Family 11: Which Statement Is Wrong?
These MCQs often hide an overgeneralisation:
- all things that move are living;
- all fungi are mushrooms;
- all animals in water are fish;
- all plants flower.
One valid counterexample is enough to defeat an “all” statement.
Question Family 12: Multi-Step Classification
Some structured questions move from broad to specific:
Grows and reproduces → living. Has animal characteristics → animal. Has feathers → bird.
The pupil should use each clue at the correct level rather than repeat all clues for every conclusion.
Apex Keyword Trap: “Keywords” Are Not Magic Tokens
Words such as classify, characteristic, living, fungi, bacteria, flowering, evidence and infer matter. But the mark comes from using the idea correctly in the sentence.
“It is living because it is a living thing” repeats the label. “It is living because it grows and reproduces” uses evidence.
MCQ Route
- Identify the scientific job.
- Underline the relevant clue.
- Eliminate options contradicted by the clue.
- Eliminate true-but-irrelevant options.
- Choose the best-supported answer.
Structured-Question Route
- State the conclusion.
- Name the relevant characteristic or classification rule.
- Use the evidence given.
- Stop when the answer is complete.
Diagram Route
- Read labels before guessing.
- Separate visible features from assumed features.
- Use only the characteristics shown or stated.
- Ask whether the picture contains enough information for the requested group.
Revision Drill: Same Concept, Six Forms
Choose one concept such as “movement alone does not prove life”. Practise it as:
- one MCQ;
- one explain question;
- one diagram question;
- one “cannot determine” question;
- one compare question;
- one distractor-elimination question.
If the child succeeds across all six, the concept is becoming transferable rather than memorised.

- I can identify the living characteristic from evidence.
- I do not use movement alone as proof of life.
- I can classify plants, animals, fungi and bacteria.
- I can classify flowering and non-flowering plants from the correct evidence.
- I can use broad animal-group clues without relying only on habitat.
- I distinguish observation from inference.
- I can choose the best evidence in an MCQ.
- I know when the evidence is insufficient.
- I can answer the same concept in MCQ, diagram and structured formats.
- I use scientific keywords as part of reasoning, not as magic mark words.
