The simplest definition
Help-seeking is the learner’s decision to obtain information, explanation, feedback or assistance when existing resources are insufficient for productive progress.
It is a core part of independent learning because independence does not mean doing everything alone. It means managing the learning process well enough to know when outside support is useful and how to use it without becoming dependent on it.
The help-seeking mechanism

The critical difference is what happens after the help arrives. If support ends the need to think, it may complete the task without strengthening the learner.
1. The learner has to recognise a real impasse
Some students ask for help too early. Others wait far too long.
A useful impasse is more specific than “This is hard.” The learner should ask whether the difficulty is temporary effort, missing knowledge, a misunderstood instruction, a strategy failure, an unknown term, or uncertainty about whether the current answer is valid.
This diagnosis helps determine what kind of help is appropriate.
2. Temporary difficulty is not always a reason to ask immediately
Learning often requires retrieval and generation before the answer is visible. If learners ask for help at the first feeling of uncertainty, they may lose the opportunity to practise those processes.
A short productive struggle window can be useful: restate the goal, retrieve what you know, try a representation, identify the exact gap. If progress remains blocked, help becomes more informative because the learner can ask a better question.
3. A precise question is already part of the learning
“I don’t understand” gives little information. “I understand why the first two terms combine, but I do not know why the sign changes in this step” reveals the boundary of knowledge.
Formulating the question forces the learner to inspect the model. This is why good help-seeking overlaps with metacognition and self-explanation.
4. Ask for the smallest useful help
Different levels of support carry different risks.
- Prompt: points attention towards a relevant feature.
- Hint: suggests part of the route without completing it.
- Explanation: makes the relationship explicit.
- Worked example: shows a complete route through a related task.
- Direct answer: resolves the task but may carry the least independent processing.
The smallest level that restores productive progress is often the best starting point.
5. Source quality matters
Help can be wrong, incomplete or mismatched to the task.
Learners should know which sources are authoritative for the current question: teacher feedback, syllabus definitions, official marking guidance where available, trusted textbooks, worked examples, or carefully checked digital resources.
Help-seeking includes evaluating the help, not simply receiving it.
6. Teacher help should preserve learner production
Teachers often help too much because they can see the route immediately.
A better sequence is often: ask what the learner has tried, locate the exact break, provide one discriminating prompt, then require the learner to continue. The teacher should carry only the part the learner cannot yet carry.
7. Peer help can be powerful when it explains rather than supplies
Peers can offer alternative explanations and make hidden assumptions visible. But peer help can also become answer exchange.
Useful peer support asks questions, explains relationships, compares methods and then returns the task to the original learner.
8. AI assistance needs the same boundary
AI can explain, generate examples, ask questions, provide hints and help diagnose confusion. It can also complete the intellectual work before the learner has attempted it.
Strong AI-assisted study should begin with the learner’s attempt, preserve uncertainty long enough for thinking, provide the smallest useful help, and end with independent retrieval or application.
The question is not whether AI was used. The question is whether the learner became more capable after the support was removed.
9. Help can create an illusion of understanding
An explanation often feels clear while it is present. A hint can make the next step obvious. A worked solution can make the whole route seem familiar.
After help, close the source and reconstruct. If the learner cannot continue without it, the help produced immediate performance but not yet independent learning.
10. Help-seeking can fail because of emotion
Students may avoid asking because they fear appearing weak, or ask instantly because uncertainty feels threatening.
Classroom culture matters. Asking a precise question should be treated as evidence of monitoring, while repeated answer-seeking without attempt should be redirected towards learner production.
11. Help-seeking is partly a timing skill
Too early and the learner avoids productive generation. Too late and frustration, misconception rehearsal or wasted time may dominate.
Useful timing rules might include: make one genuine attempt, identify the point of breakdown, try one alternative representation, then seek help if the route remains blocked.
12. The form of help should match the problem
A missing fact may need retrieval or reference. A misconception may need explanation and counterexample. A strategy problem may need comparison between routes. A working-memory problem may need external representation. A motivation problem may not be solved by more explanation at all.
Good help begins with diagnosis.
13. Asking for an example is different from asking for the same answer
A related worked example can preserve transfer because the learner still has to map the structure back to the original task.
Copying the exact answer removes more of the decision-making. Where possible, ask for an analogous case and then return to the original problem.
14. Help should fade as expertise grows
Early learners may need explicit prompts to ask useful questions. Later, they should diagnose the gap and select the resource independently.

15. A question queue prevents every uncertainty from stopping the session
Not every question needs immediate resolution. Some are interesting but nonessential to the current goal.
Write them down. Continue if the main route remains possible. Return later. This protects both curiosity and task continuity.
16. Help-seeking should leave a trace
After receiving help, record what the missing link actually was. Otherwise the learner may remember that “the teacher helped” without remembering what changed.
A short note—“I confused rate with total amount; next time check what the y-axis represents”—can turn the episode into future control.
17. The final receipt is independent return
Help-seeking succeeds when the learner can later perform with less help.
Use a fresh task, changed surface or delayed return. If the learner still needs the same prompt at the same point, the support has not yet transferred control.

- Independent learning is not refusing all help.
- Asking for the answer is not always the same as asking for help.
- More help is not automatically better.
- A clear explanation is not proof of independent understanding.
- Waiting indefinitely is not productive struggle.
- AI assistance is not educational merely because it is interactive.
- Help should not permanently carry decisions the learner can make.
