We do not begin by asking which mistake is most visible. We ask which weakness is most useful to change first.
A learner can have several problems at once. The teaching job is to find the one that is currently blocking the most important next capability.
First does not mean earliest in the syllabus. It means earliest in the dependency chain that matters now.
We start from the present task
What is school asking the learner to do now? What can the learner already do independently? Where does the route become unreliable?
That keeps repair connected to the current level rather than sending the child backwards through large amounts of old work without a reason.
Then we trace backwards only as far as necessary
A Secondary algebra problem may fail because algebra is weak. It may also fail because the student cannot translate a verbal relationship into symbols. A Primary Science explanation may fail because the concept is missing—or because the student cannot identify which condition changed.
We work backwards until we find a dependency that is both weak and teachable.

We consider urgency as well as dependency
The academically deepest weakness is not always the first practical priority.
If an examination is two weeks away, the immediate job may be to stabilise a small number of high-impact errors or improve examination execution while a deeper reconstruction is scheduled for later.
Sequencing therefore considers both what supports future learning and what the learner must be able to do soon.
We prefer a small repair that can generate evidence
When several explanations remain plausible, the first move should often be narrow and reversible.
Repair one representation. Remove one prompt. Reattempt one changed-context question. If performance changes in the predicted way, confidence in the hypothesis increases. If not, the model updates.
We do not try to fix everything in one lesson
Changing too many things at once makes the return difficult to interpret. It can also overload the learner.
A good sequence may deliberately leave some errors alone while a more load-bearing capability is being repaired.
The first priority can change
If the repair works, the next weak link becomes visible. If school demands shift, the balance between foundation and current work may change. If the learner becomes more independent, the tutor may move from support to transfer or examination craft.
A sequence is a working plan, not a fixed identity.
What parents can ask
- What are you choosing to work on first?
- What evidence made it the first priority?
- What are you deliberately not fixing yet?
- How will you know this repair helped?
- What would make you change the order?
A parent example: four wrong answers, one first job
Imagine a Primary 6 Mathematics paper with four different lost-mark questions. One contains a fraction relationship error. One is a percentage question. One is a multi-step word problem. One is an execution slip near the end.
It would be easy to create four correction tasks. A stronger first question is whether several of those failures share an earlier dependency. If the learner repeatedly misidentifies what quantity is being compared, repairing that relationship may improve more than one visible question family.
What would make that first priority defensible?
- the same break appears in more than one relevant task;
- the learner can perform the later procedure once the earlier relationship is supplied;
- a small repair improves a fresh question rather than only the corrected example;
- the repair reconnects to current schoolwork within a reasonable time;
- another explanation remains available if the predicted improvement does not appear.
This is the receipt we want from sequencing: not “we covered the weakness”, but the next relevant task became more independently possible because the chosen first job was actually load-bearing.
A failure condition worth noticing
If weeks of “first-priority” work do not improve the current task, the priority should be reopened. A sequence earns the right to continue by producing clearer capability, not by becoming the plan we are reluctant to change.
What this page does not mean
There is not always one objectively correct first weak link. Evidence can be incomplete, and two routes can both be reasonable. The standard is not certainty; it is a defensible next move with a way to learn from the result.
