Sometimes the fastest way to make current work easier is to stop doing current work for a moment.
That can feel wrong to a parent. School is already moving forward. Why would tuition go backwards?
Because a new skill can be blocked by an older dependency. If the dependency is weak, more current-level practice may simply rehearse the struggle.
Going back is useful only when it repairs something the present task still depends on.
The step backwards should be narrow
We are not trying to restart the child’s education from an earlier level.
If a Secondary student cannot solve an algebraic word problem because the relationship between quantities is not being represented correctly, the useful repair may be one bridge: language → relationship → representation → equation.
Once that bridge is rebuilt, the learner returns to the Secondary problem.
Why more current-level practice can sometimes slow progress
If the underlying route is wrong, repetition can make the wrong route more familiar. The student may become faster at recognising surface patterns while the actual relationship remains fragile.
A short repair can therefore save time that would otherwise be spent correcting the same family of errors repeatedly.
The repair must reconnect to the present
Foundation work becomes unhelpful when it stays disconnected from what the child currently has to do.
The sequence should be:
current failure → earlier dependency → repair → return to current task → test transfer.
The return is what proves the step backwards was relevant.
Parents should be able to see the reason
If tuition is moving to earlier material, ask what current problem depends on it and what change would allow the learner to return forward.
“We are going back because foundations are important” is too broad. “This percentage problem keeps failing because the reference quantity is unstable; we are repairing that relationship first” is a reason.
How to tell whether the backward step is earning its place
A useful repair should create a visible bridge back to current work. Parents do not need to judge the teaching technically, but they should be able to see the logic.

The forward-return test
After a bounded repair, give the learner a current-level task that depends on the repaired idea but does not look identical to the practice. If the learner can recognise the relationship and proceed with less support, the older work has started to pay rent.
If not, do not automatically add more old work. Ask whether the missing link is actually interpretation, transfer, execution or another dependency.
A Singapore-school reality
School continues moving while repair happens. That makes reconnection especially important at PSLE and Secondary transition stages: the repair must help the learner re-enter current classroom demands rather than create a parallel curriculum that never catches up with the present.
What this page does not mean
Not every difficulty is caused by a foundation gap. Sometimes the learner knows the prerequisite and the problem sits in transfer, interpretation, execution or examination conditions.
Going backwards should therefore be evidence-led, bounded and followed by a return to the present task.
