Why Vertical Reading Can Fail Online
Traditional reading encourages attention to the document itself: author, tone, evidence, structure. That remains useful, but an online page controls much of what appears inside its own boundary. It chooses its biography, examples, testimonials and visual design.
Digital verification adds a second move: leave the source and investigate the source from outside.
Lateral Reading
Lateral reading means opening new searches or tabs to investigate a source instead of remaining on the original page.
- Identify the organisation or author.
- Search the name independently.

Click Restraint: The First Result Is Not Automatically the Best Result
Click restraint means scanning search results before committing attention to the first link. Search ranking can reflect relevance, popularity, optimisation, freshness and many other signals. The top result is not a certificate of truth.
Before clicking, inspect:
- who published the result;
- whether the title matches the claim;
- whether a primary or official source appears lower down;
- whether independent reporting is available;
- whether several results merely repeat the same origin.

Trace the Claim to Its Original Source
A statistic often travels through several layers:

Each step can simplify, exaggerate or remove qualifications. Whenever possible, move backwards.
Worked Example 2: “Teenagers Check Their Phones 500 Times a Day”
Suppose a viral post makes this claim and links to a lifestyle article. The article links to a company blog. The company blog cites a survey of its own app users.
Questions:
- What did the survey actually count?
- Were “checks”, notifications and screen activations treated as the same thing?
- How many users were included?
- Were they representative of teenagers generally?
- Did the company have a reason to emphasise high usage?
The original source may support a narrower claim than the viral post.
Primary Source Does Not Mean Automatically Better
An original study is useful because it allows direct inspection of methods and limits. But primary sources can be weak. A poorly designed survey remains poorly designed even when read in its original form.

Corroboration: Independence Matters
Five websites repeating one press release are not five independent confirmations.
Useful corroboration comes from sources that could have reached the conclusion independently:
- different institutions;
- different reporters tracing separate evidence;
- different datasets;
- different methods reaching compatible conclusions.
The Independence Test
Ask: If Source A disappeared, could Source B still know this?
If B is merely quoting A, the evidence chain has one origin, not two.
Original Quotes
Quotes can be shortened, paraphrased or removed from context. When a quote matters:
- Search a distinctive phrase.

A verified-looking profile, large follower count or confident biography does not establish expertise for every topic.
Investigate:
- real identity;
- relevant expertise;

Popularity Is Not Corroboration
A claim can be repeated thousands of times because one popular account posted it first. Repetition measures spread, not truth.
AI-Generated Claims: Treat Output as a Claim, Not a Source
An AI system can produce fluent, coherent language that mixes accurate information, uncertain synthesis and unsupported detail. Fluency is therefore not evidence.
When an AI answer matters, convert it into checkable units:
- Underline factual claims.
- Separate stable background knowledge from current claims.
- Identify claims that affect the conclusion.
- Ask for or independently find sources.
- Open the sources rather than trusting a citation label.
- Check whether the source really supports the sentence.
- Prefer primary or authoritative sources where appropriate.

An AI answer says, “A 2025 study found that 73% of teenagers learn better with background music.”
Do not quote it immediately. Verify:

- Was 73% an outcome, preference or self-report?
- Does the paper support the broad claim?
If the source cannot be found, the claim remains unsupported no matter how specific it sounds.
AI Citations Can Be Real and Still Be Misused
A citation may link to a real article that discusses the topic but does not support the exact claim. Verification therefore requires claim-to-source alignment, not merely citation presence.
Current Information Needs Fresh Sources
Some questions are time-sensitive: regulations, officeholders, product specifications, school examination arrangements, prices, schedules and current events. For these, an old source can be accurate historically and wrong for the present question.

Stable Information Does Not Need Artificial Freshness
Not every source must be new. A primary historical document does not become invalid because it is old. A classic grammar reference can remain useful. Freshness matters when the underlying fact changes.
The URL Trap

Even if one part is accurate, the policy conclusion may outrun the study.

Verification in Argument Writing
Before using an online example or statistic, record:

- date;
- population;

- one important limit.
Verification in Oral Communication

Do not begin digital literacy with a long checklist of suspicious website features. Start with behaviour. Give the student a plausible unfamiliar page and ask them not to decide yet. The first action should be leaving the page to investigate who is behind it.
Model your search choices aloud: why you ignore one result, why you prefer another, why you trace a quote backwards, why a company press release answers a different question from an independent evaluation.
