Wait, What? A Slide Is Not a Paragraph With a Background Image
A student writes a strong paragraph, pastes all of it onto one slide, adds a photograph in the corner and calls the result “multimodal”. The slide contains words and an image, but the two modes do not share the communication job.
Multimodal representing asks a deeper question: which part of the meaning should be carried by words, which by visuals, which by layout, and which by sequence?
A multimodal text works when each mode earns its place.

1. Start With the Communication Job
Weak brief: “Make a poster about recycling.”
Stronger brief: “Create a corridor poster that helps Secondary 1 students sort drink cans, paper and food waste correctly at the school recycling point.”
The stronger brief identifies audience, setting and desired action. Design becomes easier because the text has a job.
2. Give Each Mode a Job

3. Do Not Make Words and Images Repeat Each Other
Slide heading: “The water cycle has four main stages.”
If the slide then shows a labelled cycle diagram, the visual can carry the sequence and spatial relationship. The text does not need to repeat, “Evaporation goes up, then condensation…” in a dense paragraph beside the same arrows.
Use words to explain what the diagram cannot show easily: why one stage occurs, an important condition, or a misconception.
4. Hierarchy Answers “What Should I Notice First?”
Every element cannot shout at the same volume. A useful hierarchy often includes:
- one main message;
- a small number of supporting groups;
- labels that explain rather than compete;
- clear separation between primary and secondary details.
Hierarchy is a reading route. It helps the viewer know where to begin and what to carry forward.
5. Position Creates Relationship
If a caption sits far from the image it explains, the viewer must guess the connection. If two statistics are placed side by side with the same visual weight, the design suggests comparison.
Layout therefore makes claims. Proximity, alignment and grouping can tell the viewer that items belong together even without a sentence saying so.
6. A Poster Needs a Distance Test
A poster is often seen from several metres away before it is read closely. Ask three questions:
- Can the viewer identify the topic from a distance?
- Can the main action be understood after a few seconds?
- Can supporting details be read only if the viewer chooses to approach?
This creates three layers of attention instead of one wall of text.
7. Slides Need One Movement at a Time
A presentation slide appears inside a sequence. Do not force the audience to read three arguments, inspect a graph and listen to the speaker simultaneously.
Useful slide job: “Show that attendance rose after the schedule changed.”
The slide might contain a short heading, a simple chart and one sentence identifying the key trend. The speaker can then explain the limitation.
A slide is part of spoken communication, not a replacement transcript.
8. Visual Explanations Need Accurate Relationships
Arrows are powerful because they imply direction or causation. Use them carefully.
“Rain → wet ground” can plausibly represent cause. “Homework → good grades” would overstate a complex relationship if presented as a simple guaranteed arrow.
When a relationship is conditional, represent the condition: “targeted practice + feedback → can improve performance”.
9. Icons Are Vocabulary
An icon is not automatically universal. A lightning bolt might mean electricity, energy, danger or speed. A bell might mean notification, school or alarm.
If misinterpretation matters, add a label. Visual shorthand is useful only when the audience can decode it.
10. Colour Should Carry Meaning Only When the Meaning Survives Without It
If red means “do not recycle” and green means “recycle”, add text labels or symbols too. A viewer may not perceive the colours in the same way, and printed copies may remove the distinction.
Redundancy is useful when it protects accessibility: colour + label + shape can carry the same critical distinction through multiple cues.
11. Images Need Evidence Boundaries
A photograph of a crowded canteen can show that a particular moment was crowded. It does not prove the canteen is always crowded.
A diagram can simplify a process. It should not be treated as a photograph of reality.
A visual claim still needs the same evidence discipline as a written claim.
12. Original Design Brief A: Recycling Poster
Audience: Secondary 1 students passing a recycling point.
Purpose: reduce incorrect sorting.
Main message: “Empty it. Sort it. Put it in the right bin.”
Suggested mode jobs:
- large heading carries action;
- three simple object examples show acceptable items;
- one crossed-out food container shows contamination problem;
- short labels identify each bin;
- bottom line gives exception: “Food waste goes to general waste.”
The poster should not include a 200-word explanation of recycling history. That information may be true but does not serve this reader’s immediate decision.
13. Original Design Brief B: Three-Slide Explanation
Topic: Why a school queue became shorter after a new collection system.
- Slide 1 — Before: simple process diagram showing three separate payment/collection steps.
- Slide 2 — Change: diagram showing payment moved earlier and collection separated.
- Slide 3 — Result: chart of fictional average wait times plus one evidence limitation.
The sequence moves from system → intervention → observed result. That is stronger than placing all information on one slide.
14. Original Worked Multimodal Explanation
Task: Explain the “first weak link” in a learning process to a Secondary 1 student.
Possible design:
Headline: “Fix the first break, not the last mistake.”
Visual path: Question → Meaning → Evidence → Answer → Check.
Failure markers: place a small warning symbol at each step with one example: “misread command”, “misunderstood word”, “weak clue”, “wrong answer form”, “meaning changed while editing”.
Short explanation: “If an answer is wrong, move one step upstream until you find the earliest failed job. Repair there first.”
The diagram carries sequence. The labels carry common failure types. The paragraph explains the rule. No mode needs to duplicate every other mode.
15. Multimodal Cohesion
Written cohesion uses pronouns, connectors and lexical chains. Multimodal cohesion also uses:
- consistent labels;
- repeated icon meaning;
- alignment;
- numbered sequence;
- matching heading and diagram terminology;
- captions placed near their referents.
If a diagram calls something “Stage 2” while the paragraph calls it “Step B”, the viewer must decide whether they are the same thing. Consistency reduces friction.
16. Multimodal Persuasion Still Needs Evidence
A poster says: “90% OF STUDENTS LOVE THIS PROGRAMME!”
Before using the statistic, the designer should know: 90% of how many? Which students? What question was asked? When?
Large type can amplify a weak claim. Visual prominence does not strengthen evidence.
17. Six Design Decisions
- A slide repeats a 150-word paragraph the speaker plans to read aloud. What is the problem?
- A poster uses three unrelated photographs because they “look nice”. What multimodal job is missing?
- A process diagram uses arrows between steps. What must the arrows mean clearly?
- A chart uses colour alone to distinguish two lines. What accessibility repair is useful?
- A headline says “EVERY STUDENT AGREES” based on 12 surveyed students. What is wrong?
- A visual explanation has five equal-sized headings. What hierarchy problem may occur?
Suggested Answers
- The slide duplicates the spoken mode and overloads reading/listening. Reduce to key structure or evidence.
- The images do not carry a clear explanatory, evidential or persuasive function.
- Sequence, cause, movement or another specific relationship; do not let arrow meaning stay ambiguous.
- Add labels, patterns, line styles or direct annotations so the distinction survives without colour.
- The claim exceeds the sample and scope of the evidence.
- The viewer may not know where to begin or which idea is central.
18. Independent Design Challenge
Create a three-panel visual explanation for this fictional school update: the old booking process caused duplicated room requests; a shared calendar was introduced; duplicate requests fell during the next four weeks.
Your design must include:
- one headline;
- one before/after relationship;
- one visual representation of the process;
- one small data element;
- one limitation saying the four-week result does not prove permanent improvement.
Then explain why each mode carries its assigned job.

20. Multimodal Design Receipt
- What must the audience understand or do?
- What is the one main message?
- What job does each mode perform?
- Does any image exist only as decoration?
- Can the viewer identify where to start?
- Are related items visibly grouped?
- Does sequence match the intended reasoning?
- Do arrows and diagrams represent relationships accurately?
- Can critical information be understood without colour alone?
- Does every statistic preserve its evidence boundary?
- Can I remove an element without losing meaning? If yes, why is it there?
21. Parent and Tutor Teaching Guide
Begin with paper sketches before software. Ask the student to label each element with its job: explain, show, compare, sequence, instruct, qualify. If the learner cannot name the job, the element may not belong.
Test designs at two distances: first as a quick glance, then as close reading. Ask what the viewer notices first and whether that matches the intended hierarchy.
Finally, remove one mode. If the message collapses completely, that mode may be carrying too much. If nothing changes, it may be decorative. Good multimodal design distributes meaning deliberately.
22. Delayed Return Test
Several days later, give a new topic and audience. Ask the learner to sketch a poster, three-slide sequence or visual explanation without the design engine displayed. Require a short design rationale explaining the job of words, visuals and layout.
Record whether the mode choices were independent, prompted or modelled.
