Wait, What? A Paragraph Can Be Correct on Its Own and Still Fail the Text
A Primary 3 learner may understand every paragraph separately and still lose the whole text because the connections between paragraphs are invisible. One paragraph introduces a problem. The next explains why it happens. A third gives an example. A fourth presents a solution. If the reader treats each paragraph as an isolated island, the larger reasoning disappears.
This workshop owns the layer between sentence meaning and whole-text structure: what each paragraph is doing, how one paragraph depends on another, and which transition words make the relationship easier to follow.
Paragraph function tells us what a section contributes. Logical connection tells us how that contribution relates to what came before.

1. Paragraphs Usually Have Jobs
- introduce a topic or problem;
- explain a cause;
- give an example;
- provide evidence;
- describe a feature;
- show a step or stage;
- compare two cases;
- present a result;
- propose a solution;
- conclude or return to the main idea.
A paragraph can perform more than one job, but identifying the main job helps the reader hold the text architecture.
2. The First Paragraph Often Sets the Problem, Topic or Question
Example: “The school reading corner was popular, but pupils often returned books to the wrong basket.”
This paragraph introduces the topic and establishes a problem. It creates a reason for later paragraphs to explain or respond.
3. Explanation Paragraphs Answer Why or How
Following paragraph: “The baskets were labelled only by colour, so younger pupils could not always remember what each colour meant.”
This paragraph explains a cause of the problem introduced earlier.
4. Example Paragraphs Make an Idea Concrete
“For example, a pupil looking for animal books had to remember that the green basket—not the blue one—contained nonfiction.”
The example does not introduce a new main idea. It helps the reader see the previous explanation in a specific case.
5. Evidence Paragraphs Support a Claim
“During one week, the monitors found twelve books in the wrong baskets.”
This evidence gives the problem measurable support.
6. Solution Paragraphs Respond to an Established Need
“The class replaced colour-only labels with words and pictures. Each basket now showed both the category name and one example book cover.”
The paragraph’s job is response. Its meaning depends on the problem established earlier.
7. Result Paragraphs Show What Happened After a Change
“The following week, only three books were misplaced.”
This does not prove the labels were the only possible cause, but it provides an outcome after the change.
8. Sequence Connections Organise Stages
Transitions such as first, next, then, after, later, finally can help readers track order. But sequence is the underlying relationship; the transition words make it visible.
9. Cause-and-Effect Connections Explain Why One Thing Leads to Another
- because;
- so;
- therefore;
- as a result;
- this led to;
- for this reason.
These signals are useful, but the learner must still verify that a causal relationship is actually supported.
10. Comparison Connections Align Similar Dimensions
Transitions can include similarly, both, however, unlike, while, in contrast.
A strong comparison keeps the dimension stable: both places compared for access, both systems compared for speed, both characters compared for response.
11. Addition Is Not the Same as Logical Development
Also can add another point, but adding more information does not automatically explain how ideas connect. Ask whether the new paragraph extends, proves, contrasts, exemplifies or causes something.
12. This/These Can Link Back to Earlier Ideas
“The class added labels and pictures to every basket. These changes made the categories easier to identify.”
The summary noun changes tells the reader what these refers to. Cohesion and paragraph logic cooperate.
13. A New Paragraph Should Usually Earn Its Break
A paragraph break often marks a change of job, stage, example, perspective, time or subtopic. If two paragraphs perform exactly the same small job, the writer may need to combine them. If one paragraph performs several unrelated jobs, the writer may need to split it.
14. Readers Can Label Paragraph Jobs in the Margin
Short labels such as problem, cause, example, solution, result make a long text easier to hold. The labels should be meaning notes, not copied first sentences.
Original Multi-Paragraph Text: The Borrowing Board
Paragraph 1: Class 3A kept a box of shared magazines beside the reading corner. Pupils could borrow one during silent reading, but they often forgot which magazines had already been taken.
Paragraph 2: The problem occurred because the box showed only the magazines that were physically present. Once a magazine left the box, there was no visible record of who had borrowed it.
Paragraph 3: For example, two pupils sometimes searched for the same missing magazine, even though another classmate was already reading it.
Paragraph 4: The class created a small borrowing board with one card for each magazine. When a pupil borrowed a magazine, the card moved from “Available” to “Borrowed”.
Paragraph 5: After the board was introduced, pupils could check availability before searching the box. The board did not make more magazines available, but it made the current situation easier to see.
Model Paragraph-Function Map

The text moves problem → cause → example → solution → result. This map captures more than a list of paragraph summaries because it shows the logic between them.

Explained Answer Principles
Items 1–9: paragraph function is the main contribution a paragraph makes; logical connection is how that contribution relates to another idea. Paragraphs may have more than one job, but readers identify the dominant one. Openings often introduce topic or problem. Explanation answers why/how. Examples make ideas concrete. Evidence supports. Solutions address a stated need. Results show what follows.
Items 10–15: sequence signals include first, next, then, finally; cause/result signals include because, so, as a result; comparison/contrast signals include both, similarly, however, unlike. Also may add without clarifying the deeper relationship. Summary nouns such as these changes can point back to an earlier action. Paragraph breaks often mark a shift in job or stage.
Items 16–24: P1 introduces the borrowing problem; P2 explains its cause; P3 exemplifies the problem; P4 presents a solution; P5 reports the result and limits the claim. P4 responds to the need built across P1–P3. The statement that the board made more magazines available is unsupported because the final paragraph explicitly says it did not.
Items 25–28: the logic chain is problem → cause → example → solution → result. For example could introduce P3. After the new system began or As a result could introduce P5 if the causal strength remains appropriate to the evidence. Paragraph-job notes support main idea and summary because they reveal which ideas are central and how the text develops them.

Common Primary 3 Traps
- Summarising each paragraph without explaining how they connect.
- Calling every second paragraph “more details”.
- Using transition words as labels without checking meaning.
- Assuming order proves cause.
- Using “also” when the relationship is actually contrast or result.
- Missing that an example depends on a previous general idea.
- Ignoring summary nouns such as this change/these results.
- Adding a stronger causal claim than the text supports.

Parent and Tutor Use
Give the learner a short three- or four-paragraph nonfiction text. Ask for one two-word job label per paragraph, then ask the child to connect the labels with arrows and relationship words. This reveals whether the learner is holding the architecture or only individual sentences.
Primary 4 Bridge
Primary 4 readers meet denser informational texts where paragraphs may support claims through evidence, qualification and comparison. The useful bridge is a Primary 3 learner who can already see paragraph jobs and explain the logic from one section to the next.
The Quiet Return
A paragraph is not just a block of sentences. It is a working part inside a larger text.
Name the paragraph job. Ask what it depends on. Trace the relationship. Use transitions as clues. Then step back and read the chain of jobs as the logic of the whole text.
