Wait, What? Facts Need Architecture
A Primary 3 learner may understand every sentence in a nonfiction passage and still fail to explain the passage as a whole. The missing skill is often structural: how the writer has organised the information. A paragraph can describe one subject, explain a sequence, trace a cause to a result, compare two things, or present a problem and a response. The facts may be familiar, but the arrangement changes the reading job.
Text structure is useful because it compresses meaning. When a reader recognises that a passage is organised as cause and effect, individual details become easier to connect. When a passage compares two systems, the reader expects matched dimensions rather than a random list.
The structure is the path the writer gives the reader through the information.

Singapore’s English Language Syllabus 2020 for Primary develops reading and viewing across informational texts and text organisations. The five-structure framework below is an eduKate teaching scaffold, not an official MOE examination taxonomy.

1. Description Organises Features Around One Subject
A descriptive informational paragraph tells what something is like, what parts it has or what characteristics matter.
Example: “A mangrove tree grows in muddy coastal areas. Its roots can rise above the mud, and its leaves are adapted to salty conditions.” The paragraph does not mainly tell a time sequence. It gathers features around one subject.
Useful signals include has, includes, consists of, is, contains, for example and labelled parts. But signal words are clues, not proof. Read the relationship among ideas.
2. Sequence Organises Information by Order
Sequence explains steps, stages or events in order. It may use time words such as first, next, then, after, finally, but the deeper feature is dependency: one stage leads to another.
Example: “First, place the seed in moist soil. Next, keep the pot where it receives light. After the seedling appears, check the soil before watering again.”
Ask whether the order can change. If changing the order breaks the process, sequence is probably central.
3. Cause and Effect Organises Why Something Happens and What Follows
Cause and effect connects conditions or actions to outcomes.
Example: “Heavy rain flooded the lower path, so the organisers moved the activity indoors.” Cause: flooding. Effect: location changed.
Useful signals include because, so, therefore, as a result, leads to, causes. But not every sentence containing because makes the whole passage a cause-and-effect text. Decide the dominant organising relationship.
4. Compare and Contrast Organises Matched Dimensions
A comparison text places two or more subjects against the same dimensions.
Example: “Both the classroom library and the school library lend books. The classroom library is closer and smaller, while the school library has a wider range of titles.”
Strong comparison uses matched categories such as location, size, purpose or access. Listing unrelated facts about two subjects does not create a useful comparison.
5. Problem and Solution Organises Need and Response
A problem-and-solution text identifies a difficulty, need or undesired condition and then presents a response.
Example: “Pupils often forgot which books they had recommended. The class created a small recommendation board where pupils could pin title cards.”
Ask whether the response actually addresses the stated problem. A solution that does not connect to the need is weak even if it sounds useful.
6. Main Structure and Supporting Structure Can Coexist
A passage may mainly explain a problem and solution while using a short sequence to show how the solution works. Another may compare two animals and include descriptive details for each. The reader should identify the dominant structure first, then note supporting relationships when useful.
7. Signal Words Are Evidence, Not a Matching Game
A worksheet may train children to associate because with cause and effect or both with comparison. That is a useful beginning. It becomes unreliable if the learner stops reading meaning.
Example: “Both experiments were repeated because the first measurements were unclear.” The sentence contains a comparison word and a causal word. The wider paragraph determines which relationship organises the text.
8. Paragraph Jobs Reveal Structure
Write a short label beside each paragraph: describe setting, explain cause, compare options, present solution, show stages. If the labels form a recognisable pattern, the overall text structure becomes easier to see.
9. Structure Helps Prediction
If a passage opens with a problem, the reader can predict that a response may follow. If the first paragraph describes one transport method and the second introduces another, comparison may be coming. Prediction is not guessing the facts; it is anticipating the type of information the structure may require.
10. Structure Helps Summary
Different structures produce different summary frames.
- Description: The text explains the main features of…
- Sequence: The text shows how… happens in stages.
- Cause–effect: The text explains how… leads to…
- Compare–contrast: The text shows how… and… are similar/different.
- Problem–solution: The text identifies… and explains a response.
11. Structure Helps Answer Questions
A question asking “Why did the event move?” points towards cause. “How are the two systems different?” points towards comparison. “What happened after the first stage?” points towards sequence. The question job and text structure often reinforce one another.
12. Structure Can Be Shown Visually
- Description → central subject with feature branches.
- Sequence → arrows or numbered stages.
- Cause–effect → cause → result chain.
- Compare–contrast → matched two-column grid or Venn-style notes.
- Problem–solution → problem → response → result.
The diagram should reflect the relationship; it should not become decoration.
13. Writers Choose Structure for Purpose
A writer explaining why a new reading system was introduced may choose problem–solution. A writer evaluating two systems may choose compare–contrast. A writer teaching someone to use one system may choose sequence. Structure therefore belongs to author’s craft.
14. Sometimes the Reader Must Reject a False Structure
If two facts happen one after another, that does not automatically mean the first caused the second. Sequence and cause are different relationships. “The bell rang. The rain began.” is sequence unless the text supplies a causal connection.
Original Passage A: The Class Compost Bin
After lunch, many fruit peels were being thrown into the general rubbish bin. The class wanted to reduce this waste. They placed a small covered compost bin near the washing area and added a picture guide showing which scraps could go inside. Two monitors checked it every afternoon.
Within a week, fewer fruit peels appeared in the general bin. The new system did not remove all waste, but it gave pupils a clear place for suitable scraps.
Main structure: problem–solution. The paragraph first identifies a waste problem, then introduces a compost-bin response and reports an early result.
Original Passage B: Two Reading Spaces
The classroom reading corner and the school library both provide books for independent reading. The classroom corner is smaller and can be reached within seconds. The school library is farther away but contains many more titles and reference books. Pupils may use the classroom corner whenever the teacher allows, while the school library follows scheduled opening periods.
Main structure: compare–contrast. The text matches location, size, range and access across two spaces.

Explained Answer Principles
Items 1–5: description, sequence, cause–effect, compare–contrast and problem–solution respectively. Item 6: yes; identify the dominant structure first. Item 7: signal words can appear inside other structures. Item 8: sequence shows order; cause explains why one event produces another. Item 9: comparison should use matched dimensions. Item 10: the response should address the stated need.
Items 11–15: sequence, cause–effect, compare–contrast, description and problem–solution. Items 16–18: paragraph labels reveal the jobs, structure creates expectations, and summary can preserve the dominant relationship. Item 19: no; after can show order without causation. Item 20: no; a causal sentence may be only one part of a larger structure.
Item 21: compare–contrast is main, description supports it. Item 22: problem–solution is main; the three-step sequence explains how the solution works. Items 23–25 should name the relationship explicitly, for example: “Heavy rain blocked the lower path, so the organisers moved the activity indoors”; “Both spaces provide books, but the school library offers more titles while the classroom corner is closer”; “Lost books were difficult to return, so the class created a labelled return box.”

Common Primary 3 Traps
- Matching one signal word to a structure without reading the passage.
- Calling every time order a cause.
- Calling any two-topic passage a comparison.
- Choosing a solution that does not address the stated problem.
- Ignoring a dominant structure because a supporting paragraph uses another one.
- Summarising facts without preserving the relationship among them.

Parent and Tutor Use
Take one short nonfiction page and ask the learner to draw its relationship as a diagram before naming the structure. If the drawing becomes a timeline, cause chain, comparison grid or problem–solution path, the label usually becomes easier and more meaningful.
Primary 4 Bridge
Primary 4 nonfiction becomes denser and more mixed. The useful bridge is a Primary 3 reader who can see how facts have been organised, not merely retrieve individual details.

Facts become easier to remember when the reader knows how they are connected.
Name the topic. Find the paragraph jobs. Trace the relationship. Use signal words as evidence, not shortcuts. Then summarise the structure in one sentence and test it on a different text.
