Wait, What? Two Sources Are Not Two Separate Answers
A Primary 3 learner may understand a paragraph and a diagram separately but struggle when the task asks for one answer using both. The challenge is integration. The child has to identify what each source contributes, decide where they overlap, notice where one adds something the other does not, and then combine the information without repeating or inventing.
Synthesis is not simply copying one sentence from Text A and one label from Visual B. It means building one larger idea from compatible evidence.
Good synthesis asks: What does each source contribute to the same question?

Layer 1: Begin With the Question, Not the Sources
A child can drown in information if the task is not clear. Before reading, identify the shared target.
Question: “How does the community garden help both plants and people?”
Now the learner knows to look for two dimensions: plant benefit and people benefit.
Layer 2: Build Source A Independently
Read the paragraph and identify:
- main idea;
- important detail;
- purpose;
- evidence relevant to the question.
Do not mix the visual source in yet. The first model should be stable on its own.
Layer 3: Build Source B Independently
For a table, diagram, map or chart, identify:
- title;
- labels;
- key or legend;
- important visual relationship;
- specific value or feature relevant to the question.
Again, do not combine yet.
Layer 4: Find the Shared Target
Suppose Text A explains that shade reduces water loss from soil, while Diagram B shows taller plants positioned beside younger seedlings. Both may contribute to the idea that plant placement supports growing conditions.
The synthesis target is not “everything about plants”. It is the relationship both sources help explain.
Layer 5: Separate Agreement From Extra Detail

At Primary 3, most synthesis tasks can begin with agreement + extra detail.
Layer 6: Do Not Double-Count the Same Fact
If Text A says the event starts at 10 a.m. and the timetable shows 10 a.m., that is one shared fact, not two different reasons.
The child should write the fact once and note that both sources confirm it if the task requires source comparison.
Layer 7: Visual Evidence Must Be Translated Into Language
Diagram: arrows show water moving from a collection tank to garden beds.
Useful language: “The diagram shows that collected water is directed from the tank to the garden beds.”
The answer names the visual relationship rather than saying “the picture shows water”.
Layer 8: Text Evidence Must Be Selected, Not Copied Wholesale
Paragraph: “Pupils record plant height every Friday and compare the new measurements with earlier weeks. This helps them notice growth patterns.”
Useful note: weekly measurement → compare over time → notice growth pattern.
Synthesis works better from compact meaning notes than from long copied sentences.
Layer 9: Use Source Labels During Planning
Simple planning notes:
- A: shade reduces soil drying;
- B: tall plants positioned beside younger plants;
- shared idea: arrangement helps growing conditions.
The final answer need not mention “Source A” and “Source B” unless the task asks for it, but source labels help prevent mixing evidence during planning.
Layer 10: Integrated Answers Need a Relationship Word
- both;
- also;
- while;
- together;
- in addition;
- whereas;
- the diagram adds that…
- the text explains why…
Relationship language helps the reader see synthesis rather than two separate summaries.
Worked Example 1: Text + Table
Text: “The class library became more popular after pupils were allowed to recommend books to one another. Short recommendation cards were placed beside selected titles.”

Question: What evidence suggests that recommendation cards may have increased interest?
Model answer: “The text says pupils began recommending books with cards, and the table shows borrowing rising from 18 books before the cards to 27 by Week 2. Together, the sources suggest that interest increased after the recommendation system began.”
Notice the confidence word suggest. The sources show timing and increased borrowing, but they do not prove that the cards were the only cause.
Worked Example 2: Paragraph + Diagram
Text: “The school placed recycling bins close to the canteen because most disposable drink containers were used there.”
Diagram: three recycling bins shown beside the canteen exit and one general-waste bin near the eating area.
Integrated answer: “The text explains why the recycling bins were placed near the canteen, while the diagram shows their exact location beside the exit. Together, they show both the reason for the placement and how pupils can reach the bins as they leave.”
Complete Original Synthesis Task: Reading Garden Use
Source A — Paragraph
The school’s small reading garden is open during morning arrival and selected recess periods. Pupils may choose books from a weatherproof shelf and read on benches under the shelter. Teachers noticed that some children who rarely visited the main library began using the garden because it was closer to their classrooms.
Source B — Usage Table

Questions and Model Answers
- What does Source A explain that Source B does not?
It explains where the garden is, when it is available and why some pupils may find it convenient. - What does Source B add?
It shows how average recess use changed across four weeks. - What shared conclusion is reasonable?
The reading garden is being used regularly, and use generally increased from Week 1 to Week 3 before dipping slightly in Week 4. - Can we say the garden definitely caused pupils to read more overall?
No. The sources show use of the garden but do not measure every pupil’s total reading. - Write one integrated answer about accessibility.
Source A says the garden is close to classrooms and provides books under shelter, while Source B shows regular use across all four weeks. Together, the sources suggest that the garden gives pupils a convenient additional place to read.

Common Primary 3 Synthesis Traps
- Writing two separate summaries instead of one integrated answer.
- Mixing sources before understanding either one.
- Copying long sentences rather than selecting evidence.
- Ignoring units, keys or labels in the visual source.
- Counting the same repeated fact as two reasons.
- Adding a cause that neither source proves.
- Using only the easier source.
- Assuming every difference is a contradiction.
