Wait, What? Some English Texts Are Built From Rows, Symbols and Space
A Primary 3 learner may read paragraphs comfortably and still struggle with a timetable, chart or map. The difficulty is not always mathematics or geography. These texts organise meaning differently. Information may be carried by position, labels, headings, units, keys, symbols, row-and-column intersections or routes rather than by normal sentence order.
Reading these texts well requires the child to know what the display is trying to communicate, identify the right labels, retrieve only the needed values and express the comparison or route accurately in language.
In data and spatial texts, where information appears can be part of what it means.

Layer 1: Read the Title Before the Numbers
A table headed “Books Borrowed by Class 3A in March” is not the same as “Books Available in the Class Library”. The numbers may look similar, but the title changes what they represent.
Before retrieving any value, the learner should be able to finish the sentence: “This display shows…”
Layer 2: Labels Define the Axes, Rows and Columns
In a table, the answer often sits at the intersection of a row and a column. If the child reads the correct number from the wrong row, the value itself may be accurate but the answer will still be wrong.
Use a two-finger method:
- place one finger on the target row;
- place another on the target column;
- move both until they meet;
- read the value at the intersection;
- return to the question and state what that value means.
Layer 3: Units Are Part of the Answer
A number without its unit can be incomplete.
- 15 minutes;
- 4 books;
- 250 millilitres;
- 3 kilometres;
- 9 pupils.
If a chart axis says “Number of Pupils”, answering “12” may be understandable, but “12 pupils” makes the relationship explicit.
Layer 4: Keys and Legends Explain Symbols
A map key may show:
- blue line = walking path;
- green square = park;
- book symbol = library;
- bus symbol = bus stop.
The learner should not infer symbol meaning from appearance alone when a key is provided.
Layer 5: Tables Support Exact Retrieval
Original table:

Answer: Garden Club.
Question: On which two days does Library Club meet?
Answer: Monday and Friday.
Layer 6: Comparison Needs Two Values
Weak: “Tuesday is more.”
Controlled: “Tuesday has 18 visitors, which is 6 more than Monday’s 12 visitors.”
The comparison names both quantities and the relationship.
Layer 7: Bar Charts Need Category + Scale + Value
Before reading a bar chart, check:
- what categories are shown;
- what the vertical or horizontal scale represents;
- whether each interval increases by 1, 2, 5, 10 or another amount;
- the unit;
- whether the question asks for a single value, comparison or total.
Never assume each grid line represents one unit without checking the scale.
Layer 8: Simple Trends Need Careful Language
Useful words include:
- increased;
- decreased;
- remained the same;
- highest;
- lowest;
- more than;
- fewer than;
- equal to.
A simple chart showing 5, 7, 9 over three days supports “increased each day”. It does not automatically support a reason for the increase unless the text gives evidence.
Layer 9: Timetables Are Time-Relationship Texts
A timetable requires the learner to connect activity, day, start time, end time and sometimes location.
Useful questions:
- What starts first?
- What ends later?
- Which activities overlap?
- How long is the gap?
- Which activity is available on a particular day?
- What can a person attend before or after another event?

Question: Is there enough time to attend the Book Swap and Storytelling?
Answer: Yes. The Book Swap ends at 9.45 a.m. and Storytelling begins at 10.00 a.m., leaving a 15-minute gap.
Layer 10: Maps Are Relationship and Route Texts
Map reading may use:
- left/right;
- north/south/east/west where provided;
- beside/between/opposite;
- near/far;
- route order;
- landmarks;
- keys and symbols.
Directions should identify landmarks rather than vague points: “Turn left after the library” is clearer than “Turn there.”
Layer 11: Maps and Timetables Can Be Combined
A real task may ask whether someone can reach an event in time. The child must combine route information with time information.
Example: If the walk from the library to the hall takes 10 minutes and the next event begins 15 minutes later, the schedule is possible with a 5-minute margin.
Layer 12: Read the Question Before Scanning the Whole Display
Large tables can overload attention. Use the question to narrow the search.
Question: “Which day had the fewest visitors?”
Target: compare visitor values across days. Ignore unrelated columns such as weather unless the question asks about them.
Layer 13: Evidence From a Display Should Be Named Precisely
Claim: “Friday was the busiest day.”
Evidence: “The chart shows 32 visitors on Friday, more than any other day.”
The answer names both the value and the comparison.
Layer 14: Do Not Infer Reasons From Numbers Alone
If a chart shows more visitors on Saturday, we cannot automatically say it happened because families were free. That may be plausible, but unless another source provides the cause, it is an unsupported inference.
Data can show what changed without necessarily showing why it changed.

A school learning fair has three locations: Library, Hall and Garden. The walk from Library to Hall takes 5 minutes. Hall to Garden takes 8 minutes. Library to Garden takes 12 minutes.

- Name what the display shows.
- Check labels.
- Check units or key.
- Read the question.
- Locate only the needed row, column, category or route.
- Retrieve the value.
- Compare if required.
- State the evidence in words.
- Check that no unsupported cause was added.

- Reading numbers before understanding the title.

Use authentic low-stakes texts: a library opening-hours table, a bus-arrival display, a simple museum map or a family schedule. Ask the child to explain where the answer came from, not just give the value.
