Primary 2 pupils meet information in tables, charts, timetables, maps, diagrams, signs and labelled pictures. These texts compress meaning into position, symbols, rows, columns, keys, units and spatial relationships. A child can read every printed word and still misunderstand the information if the layout itself is not read.
Visual and data texts are read with the eyes moving across structure, not only from left to right through sentences.

Layer 1: The Title Sets the Question Space
A table titled “Books Borrowed by Four Classes” creates a different reading expectation from “Bus Arrival Times”. The title tells the learner what kind of relationship the data is showing.
Layer 2: Labels Tell You What Each Position Means
In a table, row and column headings act like sentence roles. If a child reads the number 12 without checking whether the row means Monday and the column means fiction books, the number is meaningless.
Ask: 12 what? For whom? When?
Layer 3: Units Protect Meaning
- minutes;
- kilometres;
- books;
- students;
- dollars;
- degrees Celsius;
- litres.
A number without its unit can create the wrong answer. “5” may mean five minutes, five kilometres or five books.
Layer 4: A Key or Legend Changes Symbols Into Meaning
A map may use a star for a library, a blue line for a river and a dashed line for a walking path. The learner should not guess the symbols from appearance if a key is provided.
Useful rule: read the key before interpreting the symbol.
Layer 5: Tables Require Cross-Referencing
Suppose a table shows:

Layer 6: Charts Require Scale Awareness
If one picture icon represents two pupils, three icons represent six pupils—not three.
Before counting marks, ask what each mark is worth.
Layer 7: Timetables Combine Time and Conditions
A timetable question may require more than reading one time.

Bus B fits both conditions. The learner must read the constraint, not simply choose the earliest bus.
Layer 8: Maps Require Spatial Language

- above/below;
- north/south/east/west when introduced;
- beside;
- between;
- opposite;
- across;
- through;
- towards.
Map reading therefore connects directly to prepositions and procedural language.
Layer 9: Comparison Must Use the Same Dimension
Question: Which class borrowed more information books?
Do not compare Class A’s information books with Class B’s storybooks. Matched comparison rules still apply inside data texts.
Layer 10: Translate Data Back Into Language
Reading is not complete when the child points to a cell. The learner should be able to say what the evidence means.
Cell evidence: Wednesday / storybooks / 10.
Answer: “Wednesday had the highest number of storybooks borrowed, with 10 books.”
The final reading move is translation: structure becomes a sentence another person can understand.
Worked Task 1: Read a Table
Question: How many more information books were borrowed on Tuesday than Monday?
Evidence: Tuesday 9, Monday 5.
Answer: “Four more information books were borrowed on Tuesday.”
Worked Task 2: Read a Simple Chart
A bar chart shows favourite fruits: apples 7, bananas 5, oranges 9.
- Most popular: oranges.
- Difference between oranges and bananas: 4 pupils.
- Total for apples and bananas: 12 pupils.
The English job is to interpret the comparison and express it clearly.
Worked Task 3: Read a Timetable
Condition: leave after 2:15, arrive before 2:45.
Bus A leaves too early. Bus C arrives too late. Bus B satisfies both constraints.
This teaches a critical reading habit: a correct answer may require satisfying more than one condition at the same time.
Worked Task 4: Read a Map Route
Map information: library beside the park; bus stop opposite the school; footpath runs from school to park.
Question: What is one route from the school to the library?
Possible answer: “Follow the footpath from the school to the park, then continue to the library beside the park.”
Worked Task 5: True but Irrelevant Data
Question: Which activity ends earliest?
A pupil answers with the activity that starts earliest. The data may be true, but it answers the wrong relationship. This is the same relevance problem found in ordinary comprehension.
