Wait, What? Research Does Not Begin With Copying the First Sentence You Find

Primary 2 pupils are already surrounded by information from books, classroom posters, websites, videos, labels, adults and peers. The early research job is not to teach children to collect as much information as possible. It is to teach them to ask a bounded question, choose a suitable source, find the relevant part, take simple notes, keep track of where the information came from and combine ideas without copying blindly.

That is the beginning of information literacy: knowing what you are trying to find, where to look, what to keep, and how to return the information to your own thinking.

Research is not a hunt for sentences. It is a controlled path from question to source to evidence to explanation.

Layer 1: Start With a Bounded Question

Weak research question: “Tell me everything about bees.”

Stronger Primary 2 question: “How do bees help flowering plants?”

The stronger question narrows the search. The child knows which information matters and which interesting facts can be ignored.

Layer 2: A Good Source Depends on the Question

Different sources are useful for different jobs.

Research begins with source fit, not source quantity.

Layer 3: Keywords Are Search Handles

If the question is “How do bees help flowering plants?”, useful keywords might include:

  • bees;
  • flowers;
  • pollen;
  • pollination;
  • help plants reproduce, if the child already knows the phrase.

A keyword is useful because it points towards the needed information. It should not replace understanding of the question.

Layer 4: Use Headings, Labels and Contents Pages Before Reading Everything

Research reading is selective. In a book, the contents page, headings, index or captions can lead the child to a relevant section. On a webpage, headings and labelled sections can do the same job.

Teach the child to ask: Which section is most likely to answer my question?

Layer 5: Check the Source’s Purpose

Primary 2 pupils do not need a university source-evaluation framework. They can begin with simple checks:

  • Who made this?
  • Is it trying to teach, sell, entertain or persuade?
  • Does it clearly relate to my question?
  • Can I find the same important fact in another reliable source?
  • Is the information current enough for the question?

The purpose is not to teach distrust of everything. It is to teach appropriate checking.

Layer 6: Take Notes, Not Copies

Source sentence: “Bees carry pollen from one flower to another as they collect nectar and pollen for food.”

Weak note: copies the entire sentence.

Better note: bee visits flowers → pollen sticks → moves to another flower → helps pollination.

The note preserves the mechanism while reducing copying.

Layer 7: Keep a Trace Back to the Source

A simple Primary 2 note can include the source name beside the information.

The child is learning that information has an origin. Formal citation styles can come later.

Layer 8: Paraphrase After Understanding

Original: “Mangrove roots help trap mud and can provide shelter for small animals.”

Paraphrase: “Mangrove roots can hold mud in place and give small animals somewhere to hide.”

Meaning is preserved while wording changes.

Understand first. Note second. Paraphrase third.

Layer 9: Simple Synthesis Combines Supported Ideas

Suppose Source A explains that mangrove roots help stabilise trees in soft ground. Source B explains that the roots provide shelter for small animals.

Simple synthesis: “Mangrove roots help both the tree and nearby animals: they support the tree in soft ground and provide shelter for small creatures.”

Synthesis is not placing two copied sentences together. It is combining supported ideas around one question.

Layer 10: Return to the Original Question

Research can drift. A child looking up “how bees help flowering plants” may discover honey, hives, queen bees and bee dances. Those facts may be interesting but not all answer the question.

After each note, ask: Does this help answer my question?

Worked Research Task 1: Why Do Plants Need Light?

Research question: “Why do green plants need light?”

Possible source set: an age-appropriate science book and a trusted educational page.

Possible notes:

  • light helps plant make food;
  • green leaves capture light;
  • without enough light, growth can become weak.

Simple synthesis: “Green plants need light because it helps them make food. Without enough light, they may not grow well.”

Worked Research Task 2: How Can We Reduce Classroom Waste?

Question: “What two actions could help our class reduce waste?”

Possible sources: school recycling notice and classroom observation.

  • use both sides of paper before recycling;
  • bring reusable water bottles;
  • sort recyclable materials correctly.

Final response can choose two supported actions and explain why they fit the class context.

Worked Research Task 3: Compare Two Sources

Question: “How do seeds travel?”

  • Source A: wind dispersal — light or wing-like seeds.
  • Source B: animal dispersal — hooks or sticky surfaces attach to fur.

Synthesis: “Seeds can move away from the parent plant in different ways. Some are carried by wind, while others attach to animals.”

Worked Research Task 4: Source Purpose

Source A is a toy advertisement saying a science kit is “the most amazing experiment set ever”. Source B is a museum learning page explaining a simple magnet activity.

Question: Which source is better for learning how magnets attract some materials?

Better choice: Source B, because its purpose is educational and it directly explains the relevant phenomenon. Source A is mainly trying to sell a product.
