Wait, What? Finding Information Is Not the Same as Understanding It
A Primary 3 learner can type a question into a search box, copy the first sentence found and still have learned very little. Research begins before searching. The child needs a clear question, useful keywords, a way to decide whether a source is suitable, a note-making method, and enough understanding to explain the information without simply copying it.
Information literacy is therefore a language skill as well as a study skill. The learner reads, compares, summarises, paraphrases, asks where information came from and combines small pieces into a new explanation.
Research is not collecting sentences. It is asking a useful question and building an answer from information you can understand and trace.

Layer 1: Begin With a Researchable Question
“Tell me everything about trees” is too large. A Primary 3 research question should be small enough that a child can recognise when the answer is complete.
Better questions:
- How do mangrove roots help the tree survive in muddy ground?
- Why do bees visit flowers?
- What happens to paper after it enters a recycling process?
- How does a rain gauge measure rainfall?
- What makes a library book easy to find?
A bounded question creates a boundary for searching, reading and writing.
Layer 2: Turn the Question Into Keywords
Search keywords are usually shorter than the full question.
Question: “How do mangrove roots help the tree survive in muddy ground?”
Possible keywords: mangrove roots muddy ground survival.
If results are too broad, add one discriminating term. If they are too narrow, remove one.
Layer 3: Source Type Gives the First Clue
For a young learner, useful sources may include official education or government pages, museum resources, libraries, recognised science organisations, encyclopaedias written for learners, or books selected by teachers and librarians.
The child does not need to become an expert source evaluator. The first useful questions are:
- Who created this?
- What is the page trying to do?
- Is it mainly informing, selling, entertaining or persuading?
- Can I understand it?
- Does another suitable source agree on the important point?
Layer 4: Suitable Does Not Mean Difficult
A source can be reliable but too advanced for the learner. If the child understands only one sentence in ten, it may not be the best learning source for that stage. Adult support can help simplify, but the child should still be able to explain the final information.
Layer 5: Read for the Question, Not the Whole Internet
When the research question is “Why do bees visit flowers?”, the learner does not need every fact about bee colonies. Search and reading should remain attached to the question.
This protects attention and reduces copy-heavy research.
Layer 6: Make Notes, Not Copies
After reading a small section, hide it and write short notes from memory.
Source idea: “Bees collect nectar from flowers for food, and pollen can stick to their bodies as they move between flowers.”
Working notes: bees → nectar food; pollen sticks → moves flower to flower.
These notes preserve meaning without copying the sentence.
Layer 7: Keep Source and Note Together
A child should be able to answer, “Where did this note come from?” A simple research record can contain:
- source name or book title;
- page or webpage title;
- one or two notes;
- date accessed if the school requires it.
The exact citation format should follow school instructions. At Primary 3, the educational goal is traceability.
Layer 8: Compare Two Sources
When two sources explain the same point, compare them.
Source A: bees collect nectar and pollen.
Source B: bees use nectar as an energy-rich food and pollen as a protein source.
Shared idea: bees collect materials from flowers for food.
Additional detail from Source B: different collected materials contribute different nutrients.
Layer 9: Agreement Across Sources Increases Confidence, But Does Not Automatically Prove Everything
If two suitable independent sources agree on a basic fact, confidence increases. However, the learner should still avoid adding details not supported by either source.
Layer 10: Separate Fact From Persuasion
A commercial page may contain useful factual information and persuasive claims in the same place.
“This bottle holds 500 ml” is checkable.
“The perfect bottle for every child” is promotional judgement.
Research notes should preserve the checkable information needed for the question, not copy the advertising language automatically.
Layer 11: Paraphrase From Understanding
Read a small section, close it, explain it aloud and then write. This sequence reduces accidental copying and reveals whether the child really understands.
Paraphrasing should preserve important boundaries such as some, usually, may, dates, quantities and conditions.
Layer 12: Simple Synthesis Means Combining Compatible Ideas
Synthesis at Primary 3 can be simple. The child does not need a formal research essay. The learner can combine two or three notes into one explanation.
Note A: mangrove roots spread through soft mud.
Note B: some roots help the plant exchange gases in waterlogged ground.
Simple synthesis: “Mangroves have specialised root systems that help anchor them in soft ground and cope with waterlogged conditions.”
The wording should stay within what the sources actually support.
Layer 13: Images and Diagrams Are Sources Too
A labelled diagram may show information more clearly than a paragraph. The child should identify what the image contributes and whether the labels, caption or scale matter.
When using a diagram, notes should still distinguish what is directly shown from what the child inferred.
Layer 14: Ask What Is Still Missing
Research is not complete merely because three sources were opened. Return to the original question and ask:
- Have I answered the exact question?
- Which part remains unclear?
- Do I need another source, or do I already have enough?
- Am I collecting interesting facts that do not belong?
Worked Research Example: Why Do Some Playground Surfaces Feel Hotter?
Research question: Why can some playground surfaces become hotter in strong sunlight?
Keywords: playground surfaces sunlight heat material colour.
Possible source types: science museum explanation, educational material about heat absorption, local authority information about playground materials.
Working notes:
- sunlight transfers energy to surfaces;
- materials heat differently;
- dark surfaces often absorb more radiant energy than lighter ones;
- shade reduces direct sunlight reaching surface.
Simple synthesis: “Playground surfaces can become hot because they absorb energy from sunlight. The amount of heating depends on the material, colour and how much direct sunlight reaches the surface.”
The science claim should be checked against suitable educational sources; the language lesson is how the research process preserves the question, notes and synthesis.

The Copying Test
Ask the child to explain the final answer without looking at the source. If the learner cannot explain it orally, the writing may be copied rather than understood.
The Source-Trace Test
Point to one sentence in the child’s final explanation and ask, “Which source supports this?” The learner should be able to return to the note and source.
The Enough-Information Test
Research can become endless. Stop when the question is answered clearly and the key points are supported. More information is not automatically better information.

Parent and Tutor Use
Choose one small question from a child’s curiosity and research it together using two suitable sources. Keep the notes tiny. Ask the child to close the pages and teach the answer back to you. If the explanation survives without the screen, real learning has probably happened.
