Wait, What? An Explanation Is Not a List of Facts

A Primary 2 pupil may know several facts about a topic and still struggle to explain it. Explanation requires the writer to organise those facts into a relationship: what causes what, what happens first, what changes next, and why the process produces the result.

Explanatory writing therefore answers questions such as how does this work? and why does this happen? The reader should finish with a clearer mental model, not just a longer fact list.

Facts become an explanation when the writer shows the mechanism that connects them.

Layer 1: Start With a Bounded How or Why Question

Weak topic: “Plants”.

Better question: “How does a seed begin to grow?”

Another useful question: “Why do wet clothes dry faster in moving air?”

The bounded question controls which facts belong in the explanation.

Layer 2: Build the Mechanism Before Drafting

For “How does a seed begin to grow?” a simple mechanism map may be:

water + suitable warmth → seed coat softens/breaks → root grows downward → shoot grows upward → leaves open → young plant continues growing.

The map makes the relationship visible before sentence-level writing begins.

Layer 3: Sequence and Cause Are Different but Often Work Together

Sequence tells the reader what happens first, next and later. Cause tells the reader why one stage leads to another.

Example: “The seed absorbs water. As a result, the seed coat softens and the young root can begin to emerge.”

The explanation is stronger than “First the seed absorbs water. Next the root grows” because the relationship is visible.

Layer 4: Use Precise Connectors

  • Cause: because, since.
  • Result: so, as a result.
  • Sequence: first, next, then, later, finally.
  • Condition: if, when.
  • Contrast: but, however at later readiness.

The connector should reveal a real relationship. Do not add therefore just because it sounds formal.

Layer 5: Technical Vocabulary Should Improve Precision

Age-appropriate technical words can make an explanation clearer.

  • root;
  • shoot;
  • evaporate;
  • surface;
  • temperature;
  • pollen;
  • shadow;
  • friction where appropriate to the child’s knowledge.

Teach the meaning before expecting the child to use the term. A precise word only helps if the writer understands it.

Layer 6: Explain Hidden Steps

Writers often skip a step because it feels obvious to them.

Weak: “The ice melts because it gets warmer.”

More complete: “When ice receives enough heat from its surroundings, its temperature rises. The solid ice then changes into liquid water.”

At Primary 2, the explanation should remain simple, but the relationship should not be invisible.

Layer 7: Remove Interesting Facts That Do Not Answer the Question

Question: “Why do we see shadows?”

Relevant: light travels from a source, an opaque object blocks some light, and a darker area appears behind it.

Interesting but not central: some streetlights are very tall.

Explanation quality improves when every detail serves the question.

Layer 8: Reader Testing Exposes Missing Links

After drafting, ask a reader who has not heard the original lesson:

  • Can you tell what happens first?
  • Can you tell what causes the next step?
  • Is there a word you do not understand?
  • Does any jump feel too large?
  • Can you explain the process back to me?

If the reader cannot reconstruct the mechanism, the explanation needs repair.

Worked Explanation 1: How a Seed Germinates

A seed begins to germinate when it receives enough water and suitable warmth. The seed absorbs water, so its outer covering softens. A small root grows downward into the soil, while a shoot grows upward towards the light. Later, leaves open and the young plant can continue growing.

Why it works: the explanation stays on one process, uses sequence and cause, and includes precise but age-appropriate vocabulary.

Worked Explanation 2: Why Puddles Disappear

Question: Why does a puddle become smaller on a warm day?

Heat from the surroundings warms the water in the puddle. Some of the liquid water changes into water vapour and moves into the air. As more water evaporates, the puddle becomes smaller and may eventually disappear.

The explanation shows the mechanism instead of simply saying “The sun dries it.”

Worked Explanation 3: Why a Changed Plan Matters

Not every explanation is scientific. Language can explain decisions too.

The class moved the activity indoors because the outdoor path became slippery after heavy rain. By using the hall instead, pupils could continue the activity without walking across the wet area.

This is a causal explanation of a decision.

Worked Explanation 4: How a Message Reaches a Reader

Prompt: Explain how a written classroom reminder helps someone act correctly.

Possible explanation: “The writer first includes the important facts, such as the task, time and items needed. The reader uses those details to understand what to do. If the information is complete and clearly ordered, the reader can act without asking the writer for extra instructions.”
