Layer 1: Start With a How or Why Question
Explanatory writing is easier when the question is bounded.
- How does a rain gauge collect rainfall?
- Why does a shadow change position?
- How does a library classification system help readers find books?

The child should know exactly what needs to be explained before collecting details.
Layer 2: Description Answers What; Explanation Answers How or Why
Description: “A rain gauge is a container with measurement markings.”
Explanation: “Rain falls into the container and collects there. The markings allow the amount of rainfall to be read and recorded.”
The first identifies features. The second connects features to function.
Layer 3: Main Idea First
Before writing details, state the broad explanation in one sentence.
Question: Why do puddles disappear after rain?
Main explanation: “Water in a puddle can gradually evaporate into the air, especially when conditions support faster evaporation.”
Later sentences can explain the conditions more carefully.
Layer 4: Cause and Effect Need Direction
Cause comes before result in the logic, even if the sentence order changes.
“The ground receives strong sunlight, so surface water warms and may evaporate more quickly.”
“Surface water may evaporate more quickly because the ground receives strong sunlight.”
Both sentences preserve the same relationship.
Layer 5: Processes Need Sequence
Useful sequence words include:
- first;
- next;
- then;
- after;
- as;
- when;
- eventually;
- finally.
The writer should use enough sequence language to make order visible without beginning every sentence with a marker.
Layer 6: Precise Vocabulary Matters More Than Fancy Vocabulary
Explanations rely on accurate nouns and verbs. Water moves may be too vague if the process is evaporation. Heat goes into it may need clearer wording such as the surface absorbs energy from sunlight depending on the child’s curriculum and topic.
Use school-approved subject vocabulary where required. The English job is to connect the terms clearly.
Layer 7: Paragraphs Can Follow Explanation Stages

When a child writes across subjects, the factual content should come from reliable teaching material, observations, class notes or approved sources. English fluency cannot repair a scientific misunderstanding.
Teach the learner to separate two jobs:
- Is the information accurate?
- Is the explanation clear?
Layer 12: Avoid Circular Explanations
Weak: “The plant grew because it grew well.”
Controlled: “The plant received enough light and water for continued growth, so new leaves developed over time.”
The second explanation identifies conditions and result rather than repeating the claim.
Worked Example 1: Why Does a Queue Move Faster When More Counters Open?
Broad answer: More counters allow several customers to be served at the same time.
Explanation: When only one counter is open, every customer waits for the same server. If a second counter opens, the queue can split and two customers can be served at once. As a result, the waiting line may move more quickly, although the exact speed also depends on how long each transaction takes.
The explanation preserves mechanism and a sensible condition.
Worked Example 2: How Does a School Library Loan Work?
First, a reader selects a book and brings it to the loan counter or self-check station. The book’s code and the reader’s account are recorded together. This tells the library who has borrowed the item and when it should be returned. When the book is returned, the loan record is closed and the book can be made available to another reader.
The explanation follows a process and explains the purpose of each record rather than listing actions only.

A lost-and-found system helps pupils return misplaced items to their owners. When someone finds an item, it is first placed in a labelled collection box rather than being left where it was found. This gives the class one known place to check.
