Wait, What? Sometimes the Child Knows the English but Still Does the Wrong Task
A Primary 1 learner may understand every individual word in an instruction and still fail because the task contains several actions, conditions or limits at once. “Circle the animal that lives in water and underline the word beside it” is not difficult because of rare vocabulary. It is difficult because the learner must hold two actions, one condition and one source relationship in the correct order.
Instruction-following is therefore a language-comprehension skill, a working-memory skill and an execution skill. It appears everywhere: English worksheets, Mathematics problems, Science activities, classroom routines, craft tasks, games and assessments.
The Primary 1 goal is to turn instructions into a visible action plan so that the child can do exactly what was asked—not a nearby task that merely feels familiar.

Before answering, the child should be able to say the action in their own words: “I have to circle.” If there are two verbs, there may be two jobs.
Count the Action Verbs
Instruction: “Read the sentence, circle the noun and underline the verb.”

Three action verbs tell the child that the task has three parts. This is an early way to prevent “I did one thing, so I am finished.”
The Source Question: Where Does the Answer Come From?
Instruction: “Look at the picture and write two words from the box that describe it.”
- Evidence source: picture.
- Word source: box.
- Action: write.
- Quantity: two.
The child must combine sources correctly. Choosing any two good describing words from memory may still violate the instruction if the words must come from the box.
Sequence Words Are Operational

These words do not merely make writing flow. They control execution.
“Before you colour the picture, circle the three animals.” The word before reverses the order a child might otherwise choose.
Conditions: Which Items Count?
Instruction: “Tick the animals that can fly.”
The action is tick. The condition is can fly. The child should not tick every animal or every bird automatically; the condition controls selection.
The True-but-Wrong-Condition Trap
Question: “Circle the red object that is beside the chair.”
A red object across the room is truly red, but it fails the location condition. A blue object beside the chair satisfies location but fails colour. The correct answer must satisfy both conditions at once.
Quantity Is a Constraint
Instruction: “Write two reasons.”
One reason is incomplete. Five reasons may be unnecessary and can consume time. The number is part of the task meaning.
Negative Instructions Need Extra Care
“Do not colour the triangle.”
“Choose the word that does not belong.”
Words such as not, except, without, only can reverse or narrow the task. Teach the child to mark them deliberately.
Only Is a Powerful Word
“Underline only the verbs.”
The child should not underline nouns even if they are important words. Only restricts the allowed action.
Except Changes the Selection Rule
“Circle all the shapes except the square.”
The child must select a group while excluding one member. At Primary 1, use visual examples before expecting reliable execution under text-only load.
If / When Conditions
“If the sentence is a question, add a question mark.”
The action happens only when the condition is true. This is a small conditional logic problem hidden inside language.
Instruction Length Is Not the Same as Instruction Difficulty
Long but simple: “Write your name at the top of the page and put today’s date beside it.”
Short but difficult: “Circle all except two.”
Difficulty comes from action count, condition count, memory demand, unfamiliar vocabulary and relationship structure—not merely word count.
Chunk the Instruction
Instruction: “Read the paragraph, underline two words that describe the storm, then write one sentence explaining how the weather changes.”

Chunking turns one long sentence into a visible action route.

Listening Instructions Need Memory Support
Spoken instruction: “Take the blue pencil, draw a circle around the star, then put the pencil back.”
The child cannot reread the sentence unless it is repeated. Teach a short listening routine:

- repeat the steps quietly;
- do them in order;
- check the final state.
Repeat Back Before Acting
Adult says: “Put your book away and bring the red folder to the table.”
Child repeats: “Book away, red folder to table.”
The compressed repeat-back reduces working-memory load and lets the adult catch misunderstanding before action.
Pictures Can Be Part of the Instruction
“Match each sentence to the correct picture.”
The child needs to read sentence meaning, inspect visual evidence and establish a one-to-one mapping. This is a multimodal task, not simply a reading task.
Tables Can Be Part of the Instruction
“Use the timetable to find the lesson after Science on Tuesday.”

Task language controls how structured-text reading is used.
Answer Form Matters
“Circle the answer.” requires a mark on an existing option.
“Write the answer.” requires production.
“Explain why.” requires a reason, not merely a noun or number.
The child can know the content and still lose the task if the answer form is ignored.
Do Not Start Before Reading the Whole Instruction
Instruction: “Circle the nouns, but do not circle names of people.”
A child who acts after the first phrase may circle every noun, then discover the exception too late. Train a brief pause until the whole instruction has been read.
The Stop–Map–Do–Check Routine
- Stop: read/listen to the complete instruction.
- Map: identify actions, source, number and conditions.
- Do: execute one chunk at a time.
- Check: compare final work with the instruction.
Over time, the visible map can shrink to a mental routine.
Worked Example 1: Two Actions
“Circle the adjective and underline the noun.”
- Action 1: circle adjective.
- Action 2: underline noun.
- Check: both markings present and not swapped.
Worked Example 2: Quantity + Condition
“Write two words that describe the blue car.”
- Action: write.
- Quantity: two.
- Target: blue car, not another vehicle.
- Word job: describing words.
Worked Example 3: Exception
“Colour every shape except the triangle.”
Child marks except, identifies the excluded shape, then colours all remaining shapes.
