Tables: Read Across and Down
A table stores information by crossing categories.

Question: “Where does a rabbit live?” Start with the Rabbit row, then move to the Home column. The answer is burrow.
The first weak link is often not vocabulary. It is coordinate control: keeping the correct row and column active at the same time.
Use the Finger-L Path
For young readers, physically trace from the row label across, then from the column heading down. Where the two paths meet is the target cell. Fade this support when the child can hold the coordinates mentally.
Charts: Identify What the Marks Represent
A picture graph or simple bar chart may show how many children chose each fruit. Before reading values, ask:
- What is the chart about?
- What does each category mean?

Question: “Which comes earlier, English on Monday or Science?” Read both times, then compare. Do not use page position alone unless the timetable structure makes that order valid.
Maps: Symbols Become Places and Routes
A simple map may contain:
- a title;
- named places;
- paths or roads;
- symbols;
- a key or legend;
- direction words;
- sometimes scale.
Primary 1 work should remain concrete: locate, follow, compare and explain. More advanced scale calculations can wait until the relevant subject stage.
Map Key: Never Guess a Symbol

Text says the class trip is on Friday. Timetable says the bus leaves at 8:15. Combined answer: “The class trip is on Friday, and the bus leaves at 8:15.” Each detail retains its source.
