Wait, What? “After” Does Not Always Mean “Because Of”

Primary 1 English readers often understand sequence before they understand causation. They can tell that one event happened after another, but they may still assume that the first event caused the second. Cause and effect is the next important step: the reader asks why something happened and what happened because of it.

This skill appears everywhere. In stories, a character’s choice causes a consequence. In Science, heat can cause ice to melt. In classroom routines, forgetting a water bottle may cause a child to feel thirsty. A useful cause-and-effect cycle is:

WHAT HAPPENED? → WHY DID IT HAPPEN? → WHAT HAPPENED NEXT BECAUSE OF IT? → FIND THE CLUE → STATE THE LINK → TEST WHETHER IT IS REAL CAUSE OR ONLY SEQUENCE.

Cause Answers “Why?”

Sentence: “The playground was wet because it rained during the night.”

  • Effect: playground was wet.
  • Cause: it rained during the night.

The word because helps reveal the relationship, but the meaning—not the signal word—is what matters.

Effect Answers “What Happened Because of That?”

“It rained during the night, so the playground was wet in the morning.”

  • Cause comes first in the sentence.
  • Effect comes after so.

The same relationship can be expressed in different sentence orders.

Cause Can Come After the Effect

“Maya was late because the bus broke down.”

The effect appears first: Maya was late. The cause appears second: the bus broke down.

Teach children not to assume that the first clause must always be the cause.

Sequence Is Not Automatically Cause

“Ben ate breakfast. Then the phone rang.”

The phone rang after breakfast, but breakfast probably did not cause the phone to ring. This is sequence only.

A strong early-reader habit is to ask: Did Event A make Event B happen, or did Event B simply happen later?

The “Remove the Cause” Test

Text: “The ice melted because it was left in the sun.”

Ask: if the ice were not left in the sun, would the melting probably happen in the same way and at the same time? Removing the cause changes the expected result, so the causal link is sensible.

This is an eduKate reasoning scaffold, not a formal scientific test.

Signal Words: Helpful Clues, Not Magic Answers

At Primary 1, focus most on familiar words such as because, so, if and then. Later forms can be introduced through reading.

Because Gives a Reason

“Lina took an umbrella because dark clouds were gathering.”

The cause explains the decision.

So Gives a Result

“Dark clouds were gathering, so Lina took an umbrella.”

Same relationship, different connector.

If–Then Shows a Conditional Cause

“If you leave the ice in the sun, then it will melt faster.”

Primary 1 readers can begin understanding that the effect depends on a condition.

Cause and Effect in Stories

Stories are full of causal chains:

GOAL → PROBLEM → CHOICE → CONSEQUENCE → NEW SITUATION.

Example:

  • Ben wants to surprise his sister.
  • He hides the gift badly.
  • She sees it early.
  • The surprise is spoiled.

His choice causes the consequence.

Cause and Effect in Nonfiction

Informational texts may explain why something happens:

  • Rain causes puddles to form.
  • Lack of water can cause leaves to droop.
  • Heating ice causes it to melt.
  • Strong wind can move loose objects.

Cause-effect reading therefore supports Science and general knowledge as well as English comprehension.

Do Not Confuse Explanation with Opinion

Claim: “The plant drooped because it needed water.”

If the text or experiment supports this, it is an explanatory relationship. If the child simply guesses without clues, it is a hypothesis, not yet evidence.

One Cause Can Have Several Effects

Cause: heavy rain.

  • playground becomes wet;
  • outdoor game is cancelled;
  • children move indoors;
  • drains fill with water.

Primary 1 learners can begin seeing that a single event may change several things.

Several Causes Can Contribute to One Effect

Effect: Ben misses the bus.

  • wakes up late;
  • cannot find shoes;
  • leaves home slowly.

Do not force every event into a one-cause/one-effect model. Start simple, then allow multiple causes when the text clearly supports them.

Immediate Cause vs Earlier Cause

Story:

  • Ben forgets to charge the tablet.
  • Battery becomes low.
  • Tablet turns off during the presentation.

Immediate cause of shutdown: battery is empty. Earlier cause: Ben forgot to charge it. Both belong to the causal chain.

Cause and Effect Can Cross Sentences

“Maya left the window open. Rain blew into the room during the storm. The books on the sill became wet.”

The cause-effect relationship is not written in one neat sentence. The reader must connect information across the paragraph.

Cause Can Be Implied

“The puppy stared at the empty bowl and whined.”

Possible inference: the puppy may be hungry because the bowl is empty. This is supported but not explicitly stated.

Teach children to distinguish stated cause from inferred cause.

The Cause–Effect Arrow

Use a simple organiser:

CAUSE → EFFECT

Then extend it when needed:

CAUSE → EFFECT 1 → NEW CAUSE → EFFECT 2

This turns a story or explanation into a visible chain.

Cause–Effect vs Problem–Solution

Problem–solution asks what difficulty exists and how it is addressed. Cause–effect asks why something happened and what resulted. One text can contain both.

Cause–Effect vs Sequence

Sequence: first / next / last.

Cause-effect: why / because / result.

Strong readers can track both without confusing them.

Cause–Effect and Vocabulary

Verbs often reveal causation:

  • caused
  • made
  • led to
  • resulted in
  • because
  • so

At Primary 1, children can understand the meaning before mastering every phrase.

Cause–Effect and Answer Precision

Question: “Why did Lina bring an umbrella?”

Weak answer: “Because umbrella.”

Better answer: “Lina brought an umbrella because she saw dark clouds and expected rain.”

The answer gives a complete causal relationship.

Cause–Effect and Writing

Young writers often create event lists:

“I ran. I fell. Mum came.”

Revision can expose cause:

“I ran across the wet floor, so I slipped and fell. Mum came when she heard me call.”

Worked Example 1: Story Cause

“Maya forgot to close her bottle, so water leaked into her bag.”

  • Cause: bottle left open.
  • Effect: water leaked into bag.
  • Evidence: explicit so relationship.

Worked Example 2: Science Cause

“The chocolate softened because it was left near the warm window.”

Cause and effect connect heat exposure to change.

Worked Example 3: Sequence Only

“The bell rang after Ben tied his shoe.”

The tying happened first, but did not cause the bell. Label it sequence, not cause.

Worked Example 4: Implied Cause

“Lina rubbed her arms and moved closer to the heater.”

Possible cause: she feels cold. Evidence: rubbing arms + moving to heater.

Worked Example 5: Chain

Rain begins → game moves indoors → floor becomes crowded → teacher divides class into smaller groups. One effect becomes a new cause for the next event.

The First-Weak-Link Cause Check

  1. Can the child state the event?
  2. Can the child answer what happened before?
  3. Can the child explain why the event happened?
  4. Can the child state what happened because of it?
  5. Can the child find a clue in the text?
  6. Can the child distinguish sequence from cause?
  7. Can the child write one because/so sentence accurately?

A 15-Minute Cause–Effect Routine

  1. 3 minutes: sort four examples into cause-effect or sequence-only.
  2. 3 minutes: identify cause/effect in two sentences.
  3. 3 minutes: draw one cause → effect arrow.
  4. 3 minutes: infer one cause from clues.
  5. 3 minutes: write one because sentence and one so sentence.

What Parents Can Do

  • Talk about everyday cause and effect: wet shoes, melted ice, missed bus.
  • Ask “Did that cause it, or did it only happen before it?”
  • Use simple if–then games.
  • Draw arrows between events in a picture book.
  • Ask for evidence when the child suggests a cause.
