Primary 1 children can know many facts and still struggle to explain. They may say, “Plants need water. Plants grow. Plants have roots.” Every sentence may be true, but the reader still does not know how the ideas connect.
Explanation writing makes relationships visible. It answers questions such as how does this happen?, why does this happen?, or what happens first, next and last? The child must organise facts into cause, sequence or function so another person can follow the mechanism.
The Primary 1 goal is to move from “I know some facts” to “I can connect the facts so another person understands how or why.”

How and Why Are Different Jobs
How often asks for a process or method. Why often asks for a reason or cause.
Question: “How does a seed begin to grow?” The child explains a sequence.
Question: “Why does a plant need water?” The child explains a reason.
Start with a Small Explanation
- How does ice melt?

Small questions are easier to organise and verify.
Process Explanations Need Order
Example: seed growth.
- The seed absorbs water.
- The seed coat softens.
- A root begins to grow downward.

- Leaves begin to open.
The language does not need to be scientifically advanced. It needs to preserve the important order accurately enough for the reader to build the process.
Cause and Result Need a Link
Weak: “The sun shines. The puddle gets smaller.”
Connected: “The sun warms the water, so some of it changes into water vapour and the puddle gets smaller.”
The connector makes the mechanism visible.

Primary 1 learners do not need all of these at once. The important idea is that language should reveal how ideas relate.
Precise Nouns and Verbs Matter
General: “The thing takes in water and does something.”
Precise: “The root absorbs water from the soil.”
Precise language reduces ambiguity and often shortens the explanation.
Technical Words Need Child-Friendly Meaning
Topic words such as root, vapour, shelter, friction, habitat may be useful, but the writer should understand them before using them.
Example: “Water vapour is water in gas form.” A short clarification can make the explanation usable.
Diagrams Can Support Explanations
A simple labelled sequence can reduce writing load:
seed → root → shoot → leaves
The child can then turn the visual sequence into sentences. The diagram supports the explanation; it does not replace the language completely.
The Missing-Step Test
Ask another person to read the explanation and identify where they become confused.
Example:
- Put the ice in the sun.
- The water disappears.
The explanation skips the melting stage and may also misuse disappears. A stronger explanation shows ice → liquid water → water vapour over time.
Do Not Add Every Fact You Know
Question: “How does a duck swim?”
Relevant: webbed feet push against water.
Interesting but unnecessary: ducks lay eggs. The fact may be true, but it does not help answer the current explanation job.
Explanations Should Usually Avoid Story Padding
Weak opening: “One beautiful sunny morning, I woke up and thought about how plants grow…”
Direct opening: “A seed begins to grow when it absorbs water.”
Purpose controls style. Explanatory writing usually values clarity over narrative decoration.
Worked Example 1: Why Do We Wash Our Hands?
Possible explanation: “We wash our hands to remove dirt and many germs. Soap helps loosen oils and dirt from the skin. Rinsing carries the loosened material away.”
The writing answers why and briefly explains how.
Worked Example 2: How Does a Paper Aeroplane Fly Forward?
Child-friendly explanation: “When you throw the paper aeroplane, your hand pushes it forward. Air moves around the wings while the plane glides. The shape of the folds helps it stay balanced for a short distance.”

Facts: rain falls → ground becomes wet → puddles form in low places.
Explanation: “When rain falls faster than the ground can absorb or drain it, water collects in lower places and puddles form.”
Worked Example 4: Missing Step Repair
Draft: “Put bread in the toaster. Then eat it.”
Missing step: the toaster heats the bread until it becomes toasted, and it should be removed safely before eating.
