Advanced Translation and Mediation Without Meaning Drift | 高级翻译与调解中的意义保持

Advanced translation is not replacing words. It is preserving meaning, force, scope, register and relationship across languages.

At high levels, translation and mediation become acts of judgement. A sentence may have no one-to-one equivalent. The translator must decide what is essential, what can move, what must remain explicit, and what should be explained rather than translated literally.

高级翻译真正难的是“不漂移”:原文的主张强度、来源距离、范围、语气、礼貌、专业含义和受众关系,都不能在换语言时偷偷改变。

1. Translation vs mediation | 翻译 vs 调解

Translation focuses on moving language between languages. Mediation may also involve summarising, explaining, simplifying, or adapting information for another person.

2. Preserve the proposition | 保留核心命题

Original:

The evidence suggests a small benefit.

Do not translate it into language equivalent to:

The evidence proves the method works.

3. Preserve certainty | 保留确定度

  • may ≠ will
  • suggests ≠ proves
  • likely ≠ certain

4. Preserve scope | 保留范围

some participants must not become all learners.

5. Preserve time | 保留时间

during the six-week trial is part of meaning.

6. Preserve causality | 保留因果强度

associated with must not become caused.

7. Preserve source ownership | 保留来源归属

The authors argue… is not the same as your own factual statement.

8. Preserve source distance | 保留来源距离

claims, reports, suggests, demonstrates signal different relationships to a source.

9. Preserve register | 保留语体

A formal legal-style sentence should not become casual chat unless the mediation task requires adaptation.

10. Preserve interpersonal force | 保留人际力度

Could you…? may be a polite request, not uncertainty.

11. Literal translation can fail | 逐字翻译可能失败

Idioms, discourse markers, politeness formulas and professional terminology often require functional translation.

12. Function before surface form | 先功能后表面形式

Ask:

  • What is this sentence doing?
  • Informing?
  • Warning?
  • Softening?
  • Challenging?
  • Reassuring?

13. Translate the job | 翻译“句子的工作”

Do not preserve a surface pattern if it changes the communicative function.

14. Chinese subject omission | 中文省主语

English often requires more explicit subject/reference tracking.

15. English article system | 英语冠词

Chinese does not have the same article system. Translation into English may require choosing a/an/the/zero article based on discourse reference.

16. Tense/aspect differences | 时态体差异

English often marks time and aspect morphologically where Chinese may rely more on context, time expressions and particles.

17. Modality differences | 情态差异

Words such as 应该、可能、必须 may map to different English forms depending on advice, expectation, probability, obligation or deduction.

18. Politeness differences | 礼貌差异

Do not assume that equivalent politeness is achieved through equivalent word count or indirectness.

19. Cultural references | 文化参照

Some references require:

  • translation
  • brief explanation
  • substitution
  • retention with gloss

20. Do not erase culture automatically | 不要自动抹掉文化

Adapt only when the reader job requires it.

21. Idioms | 习语

Translate meaning and register, not image-by-image.

22. Four-character expressions | 四字表达

Elegant Chinese compression may need a longer English phrase.

23. English phrasal verbs | 英语短语动词

A single Chinese verb may correspond to a phrasal verb in natural spoken English.

24. Terminology | 术语

Check field usage rather than inventing a translation from component words.

25. Same Chinese term, different English terms | 同中文术语多种英文

Example:

标准 may be standard, criterion, benchmark, threshold depending on function.

26. Same English term, multiple Chinese renderings | 同英文多种中文

claim may require different Chinese wording depending on whether it is neutral, argumentative or sceptically distanced.

27. Terminology ledger | 术语账本

TermMeaning in this fieldPreferred translationNotes
criteriondimension used for judgement判据/标准之一not threshold

28. Consistency matters | 术语一致性

Do not switch translations for style if the change creates conceptual drift.

29. But consistency is not mechanical | 一致不等于僵硬

One English term can require different Chinese choices in different contexts.

30. Mediation by simplification | 通过简化调解

Technical:

External validity remains uncertain.

Plain mediation:

We do not yet know whether the same result would appear in other groups or settings.

31. Simplification must preserve limits | 简化不能删限制

Plain language is not licence to remove uncertainty.

32. Mediation by summary | 通过总结调解

Reduce detail while preserving:

  • main claim
  • main evidence
  • main limitation
  • source ownership

33. Mediation by explanation | 通过解释调解

Sometimes a short explanation is more accurate than a short translation.

34. Mediation by reorganisation | 通过重组调解

Change information order if the target audience needs a different entry point.

35. Executive mediation | 行政调解

Translate technical evidence into decision, risk and next action.

36. Public mediation | 公众调解

Translate technical evidence into what is known, what is uncertain and why it matters.

37. Specialist mediation | 专业调解

Preserve terminology, method and caveats.

38. Oral mediation | 口头调解

Listen, compress and explain in real time without inventing information.

39. Note before mediating | 调解前先做意义笔记

Record concepts, not sentences.

40. Close the source before paraphrasing | 改写前先离开原文

This reduces patch translation and structural copying.

41. Back-translation as a check | 回译可作为检查

Back-translation can reveal drift, but it is not a perfect truth test because languages package meaning differently.

42. Meaning invariants | 意义不变量

Check:

  • who
  • what
  • when
  • how certain
  • how broad
  • according to whom
  • why

43. Pragmatic invariants | 语用不变量

Check:

  • politeness
  • criticism strength
  • urgency
  • deference
  • humour

44. Legal/official caution | 法律/官方语境谨慎

In high-stakes settings, do not improvise terminology or simplify away formal conditions.

45. Scientific caution | 科学语境谨慎

Preserve statistical and causal distinctions.

46. Educational caution | 教育语境谨慎

Do not convert performance evidence into certification claims.

47. Figurative language | 修辞语言

Translate the metaphor only if the target image works naturally and preserves the same inference.

48. Otherwise paraphrase literally | 否则改成字面解释

Meaning outranks image preservation.

49. Irony and humour | 反讽与幽默

These are highly context-sensitive. If the intended effect cannot be preserved, explanatory mediation may be safer than literal translation.

50. Do not over-explain everything | 不要过度解释

Advanced mediation also knows what the audience can infer.

51. Compression ratio | 压缩比例

Try:

  • 500 words → 200
  • 200 → 80
  • 80 → 30

At each stage, check what meaning was lost.

52. Expansion ratio | 展开比例

Take a dense 30-word technical sentence and explain it clearly in 150 words without changing the claim.

53. Bilingual glossary maintenance | 双语术语库

Keep a personal glossary of high-value field terms with examples, not isolated translations.

54. Mandarin transfer:不要把英语先进结构逐字搬进中文 | 中文也要自然

Mediation requires natural target-language structure.

55. English output should not look translated | 英文不应有明显翻译腔

Use English collocation, reference and information order naturally.

56. Reading practice A | 练习 A

Source:

The evidence is consistent with a modest short-term effect but does not establish long-term causality.

Translate/mediate into clear Chinese while preserving modest, short-term and does not establish causality.

57. Reading practice B | 练习 B

Chinese source:

目前结果只能说明短期内可能有效,还不能证明长期一定有效。

English should preserve the uncertainty and causal boundary.

61. Self-test | 自测

Translate or mediate complex English/Chinese material while preserving proposition, scope, certainty, source ownership, register, pragmatics and terminology.

62. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Mark meaning drift before grammar elegance.

Ask learners to explain why they changed form across languages.

At advanced levels, allow explanation when one-to-one translation would be misleading.

63. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Choose a 500-word source.
  2. Create a terminology ledger.
  3. Translate it accurately.
  4. Write a 150-word mediated summary.
  5. Explain it orally in two minutes.
  6. Preserve uncertainty.
  7. Preserve source distance.
  8. Preserve scope.
  9. Audit pragmatics.
  10. Explain the five hardest translation decisions.
