How to Learn Basic English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.088 | From C1 Toward C2 | 从 C1 走向 C2

Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0088 · Lesson No.088 · C1 → C2-Direction Transition

From C1 Toward C2 | 从 C1 走向 C2

C2-direction mastery is not simply “more advanced English”. It is unusually high control over meaning, nuance, evidence, audience, speed, reformulation and stylistic choice across difficult situations.

This lesson is a transition map, not a certificate. Completing it does not make a learner C2. It identifies the kinds of control that must become broader, faster, more precise and more flexible after stable C1 performance.

这一课不是“完成后就是 C2”。它检查的是:能不能在陌生、高密度、跨领域、跨受众、语义细微的任务中,仍然保持极高的精度与灵活度。

The C1→C2 map | C1 到 C2 地图

  • semantic precision
  • fast reformulation
  • pragmatic nuance
  • dense evidence
  • cross-domain synthesis
  • audience adaptation
  • register flexibility
  • rhetorical control
  • implicit meaning
  • independent judgement
  • stylistic range
  • performance under unfamiliarity

1. Stable C1 first | 先稳定 C1

If long argument, source handling, pragmatic listening or audience adaptation still collapses under ordinary pressure, repair those systems first.

2. C2-direction = breadth + precision + speed | 广度 + 精度 + 速度

The learner increasingly controls difficult language without needing long preparation.

3. Semantic precision | 语义精度

At this level, near-synonym choice matters:

  • possible
  • plausible
  • probable
  • likely
  • conceivable

The best word is the one that matches the exact meaning and context.

4. Lexical restraint | 词汇克制

C2-direction control includes choosing a simple word when it is more exact than a rare one.

5. Collocation becomes automatic | 搭配逐渐自动化

Phrase choice should require less conscious assembly.

6. Semantic prosody | 语义韵律

Advanced speakers increasingly sense whether a phrase normally appears in positive, negative, neutral or technical contexts.

7. Colligation | 语法搭配

Grammar patterns tied to vocabulary should become stable:

  • capable of doing
  • attribute X to Y
  • distinguish X from Y
  • prevent X from doing Y

8. Fast reformulation | 快速改写/换说法

Can you restate an idea immediately:

  • more simply
  • more formally
  • more technically
  • more cautiously
  • more directly

9. Preserve proposition across reformulation | 换说法但不换意思

Meaning, scope, certainty and source ownership must survive.

10. Compression and expansion | 压缩与展开

C2-direction users can compress an idea for experts and expand it for novices without distortion.

11. Pragmatic nuance | 语用细微差别

Track:

  • indirectness
  • understatement
  • politeness
  • humour
  • possible irony
  • stance shifts

12. Nuance is evidence-based | 语气判断也要有证据

Do not infer hidden intent from tone alone.

13. Cultural flexibility | 文化语用灵活度

Different English-speaking communities and professional cultures use directness, humour and politeness differently.

14. Avoid one-rule pragmatics | 不用一条规则解释所有人

Advanced control tolerates variation.

15. Dense listening | 高密度听力

Move toward:

  • long interviews
  • debates
  • lectures
  • technical panels
  • fast multi-speaker discussion

16. Track layered stance | 多层立场

A speaker may:

  • report someone else’s claim
  • distance themselves from it
  • partly agree
  • add a limitation

17. Nested source tracking | 嵌套来源追踪

She said the authors argued that…

Keep ownership clear through multiple levels of reporting.

18. Dense reading | 高密度阅读

Handle long noun phrases, nominalisation, reduced clauses, implicit assumptions and specialised terminology without losing macro-structure.

19. Cross-domain reading | 跨领域阅读

C2-direction work increasingly requires transferring reasoning skills into unfamiliar domains.

20. Domain humility | 领域谦逊

Language proficiency does not equal subject expertise. Know when the content itself requires external knowledge.

21. Method literacy | 方法素养

Distinguish:

  • measurement
  • association
  • causation
  • uncertainty
  • generalisation

22. Evidence weighting | 证据权衡

Do not count sources. Compare relevance, method, scope and uncertainty.

23. Conflicting sources | 来源冲突

Explain whether disagreement comes from:

  • definition
  • population
  • method
  • time period
  • values
  • measurement

24. Cross-domain synthesis | 跨领域综合

Can you connect ideas from two fields without flattening their differences?

25. Analogy across fields | 跨领域类比

State where the analogy works and where it stops.

26. Avoid false equivalence | 避免错误等同

Two systems can share one mechanism while differing elsewhere.

27. Audience adaptation under speed | 快速适应受众

Switch from specialist to general explanation without a long pause.

28. Same evidence, different packaging | 同证据,不同包装

Evidence should remain stable even when terminology and detail change.

29. Multi-layer explanation | 多层解释

Strong advanced speakers can give:

  1. one-line answer
  2. short explanation
  3. full technical version

30. Register switching | 语体切换

Move smoothly among:

  • informal
  • neutral
  • professional
  • formal
  • technical
  • public-facing

31. Register without caricature | 语体不是刻板模板

Formal does not mean noun-heavy; informal does not mean careless.

32. Stylistic control | 风格控制

Advanced users can deliberately choose:

  • plain explanation
  • analytical prose
  • narrative illustration
  • concise briefing
  • formal argument

33. Style follows purpose | 风格服务目的

Do not display complexity for its own sake.

34. Rhetorical emphasis | 修辞强调

Use inversion, clefts, parallelism and rhythm selectively.

35. Parallelism | 平行结构

The question is not whether the policy is flexible, but whether it is fair, reliable and sustainable.

36. Rhythm and information flow | 节奏与信息流

Sentence length can vary to control pace and emphasis.

37. Long sentence control | 长句控制

A long sentence should remain structurally transparent.

38. Short sentence control | 短句控制

Short sentences can create clarity or emphasis. They are not “less advanced”.

39. Implicit meaning | 隐含意义

C2-direction readers/listeners often recover meaning that is not fully explicit—but still keep inference calibrated.

40. Ambiguity tolerance | 容忍歧义

Not every ambiguity must be resolved immediately.

41. Productive uncertainty | 有效不确定

Sometimes the best answer is:

The evidence supports two plausible interpretations, and the current data do not distinguish them.

42. Advanced disagreement | 高级分歧

Disagree precisely:

  • definition
  • premise
  • method
  • inference
  • scope
  • value criterion

43. Avoid vague disagreement | 不说“我就是不同意”

Name the exact level of disagreement.

44. Real-time synthesis | 实时综合

In discussion, summarise several speakers:

It sounds as though we agree on the evidence but differ on which criterion should carry the most weight.

45. Mediation skill | 调解表达

Advanced language can help two sides see where disagreement actually lies.

46. Public explanation | 公共解释

Translate technical uncertainty into clear non-technical language without hiding limitations.

47. Specialist discussion | 专业讨论

Use field terminology accurately and efficiently.

48. Writing at C2 direction | C2 方向写作

Move toward 1,000+ word analytical tasks with strong source control, but length alone is not the target.

49. Long-form architecture | 长文架构

Maintain a central question across:

  • multiple sections
  • source conflicts
  • counterarguments
  • qualifications
  • reframing

50. Local vs global coherence | 局部 vs 全局连贯

Each paragraph must work locally and contribute globally.

51. Source economy | 来源经济

Do not repeat attribution mechanically once ownership is clear.

52. Source precision | 来源精度

Reporting verbs should preserve stance and evidential force.

53. Phraseology | 语块

Lexical bundles should support fluency without making prose formulaic.

54. Editing becomes selective | 编辑更有选择性

Prioritise errors that change meaning, stance, evidence or reader navigation.

55. Micro-editing | 微编辑

At high levels, improvements may involve one preposition, one reporting verb, one hedge or one collocation.

56. Macro-editing | 宏观编辑

Also check:

  • argument order
  • source weighting
  • section balance
  • audience fit

57. Independence | 独立性

C2-direction learners increasingly identify and repair their own weak links without full external diagnosis.

58. Strategic tool use | 策略性工具使用

Use dictionaries, corpora, reference tools and domain sources to verify language and content where appropriate.

59. Independence is not isolation | 独立不等于孤立

Experts also consult tools and other experts.

60. Domain transfer | 跨领域迁移

Test skills on unfamiliar topics—not only favourite subjects.

61. Transfer test | 迁移测试

If a learner can only perform at a high level on rehearsed topics, the ability is not yet fully generalised.

62. Time pressure | 时间压力

C2-direction control should survive reasonable time limits without collapsing into vague language.

63. Complexity pressure | 复杂度压力

Increase:

  • number of sources
  • speaker count
  • topic unfamiliarity
  • register shifts
  • contradictory evidence

64. Interaction pressure | 互动压力

Add questions, interruptions, counterexamples and clarification requests.

65. Error tolerance | 错误容忍

High proficiency does not mean zero errors. It means errors are rare, local, repairable and do not destabilise meaning.

66. Mandarin transfer: 高级阶段不再以翻译为中心 | 意义直接处理

Chinese remains useful for conceptual comparison, but routine advanced processing should increasingly occur directly in English.

67. Mandarin transfer: “高级=难词”要彻底放弃 | 精度优先

At C2 direction, rare vocabulary without semantic fit is a weakness, not a strength.

68. Listening mission | 听力任务

Listen to a 15-minute expert discussion outside your strongest domain. Track stance, evidence, pragmatic meaning and source references.

69. Reading mission | 阅读任务

Read 4,000–6,000 words across several sources, including one source that disagrees with the others.

70. Synthesis mission | 综合任务

Write a 200-word synthesis that explains why sources differ.

71. Speaking mission | 口语任务

Give the same five-minute explanation to:

  1. a general audience
  2. a professional audience
  3. a specialist audience

72. Discussion mission | 讨论任务

Sustain 20 minutes on a semi-unfamiliar issue and revise one position if evidence requires it.

73. Writing mission | 写作任务

Write 1,000–1,200 words with:

  • multiple sources
  • method awareness
  • counterargument
  • source weighting
  • audience-aware register
  • precise conclusion

74. Register-switch mission | 语体切换任务

Convert a technical 250-word section into a 120-word public explanation without distorting the evidence.

75. Lexical mission | 词汇任务

Edit 20 near-synonym and collocation choices.

76. Pragmatic mission | 语用任务

Analyse five indirect or potentially ironic remarks and assign confidence levels to your interpretations.

78. Green / Amber / Red | 绿黄红

  • Green: stable under unfamiliarity, speed and register variation.
  • Amber: strong with preparation but slower under pressure.
  • Red: meaning, source control or audience fit breaks.

79. Twelve-week C1→C2 bridge | 十二周过渡模型

Weeks 1–2lexical precision词汇精度
Weeks 3–4method/evidence reading证据方法
Weeks 5–6audience/register switching受众语体
Weeks 7–8cross-domain synthesis跨领域综合
Weeks 9–101,000-word analytical work长写作
Weeks 11–12unfamiliar integrated performance陌生综合任务

This is a planning model, not a guaranteed timeline.

80. Self-test | 自测

Can you preserve semantic precision, analyse evidence methods, adapt instantly to audiences, interpret pragmatic nuance, synthesise across domains and maintain coherent high-level performance under unfamiliar conditions?

81. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

At this stage, avoid chasing more grammar simply because it is available.

Increase unfamiliarity, audience variation, source conflict and semantic precision.

For Mandarin speakers, evaluate whether advanced English is increasingly processed directly rather than translated sentence by sentence.

82. What Lessons 085–088 add | 第八十五至八十八课增加了什么?

088C1→C2 transition and transfer under complexity

83. Final 180-minute transition mission | 最终 180 分钟任务

  1. Read 4–5 sources totalling 5,000+ words.
  2. Listen to a 15-minute expert discussion.
  3. Build a source and method matrix.
  4. Write a 200-word synthesis.
  5. Explain the issue to three audiences.
  6. Hold a 20-minute challenged discussion.
  7. Write a 1,000–1,200 word analysis.
  8. Run lexical, evidence, pragmatic and register audits.
  9. Reformulate one section for a public audience.
  10. Diagnose the first weak link.

Consistent success is meaningful evidence that C2-direction work is appropriate. It is not a substitute for formal assessment when certification is required.
