Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0087 · Lesson No.087 · C1→C2-Direction Audience Adaptation
Speaking Across Registers and Audiences | 跨语体与受众口语表达
Advanced speaking means preserving the core meaning while changing how much you explain, how directly you speak, which words you choose and how you manage the relationship with the listener.
The same idea should not sound identical when spoken to a close friend, a young learner, a parent, a manager, a specialist or a general public audience.
高级口语不是“永远说得更正式”。真正高级的是:同一个意思,能根据受众准确调节语体、信息量、术语、礼貌程度和互动方式。

The audience-adaptation map | 受众适应地图
- purpose
- audience knowledge
- relationship
- register
- directness
- terminology
- evidence density
- examples
- politeness
- interaction style
1. Start with purpose | 先看目的
Are you trying to:
- inform
- explain
- persuade
- request
- correct
- reassure
- teach
- negotiate
2. Same audience, different purpose | 同一受众,不同目的
A manager may need a short update, a recommendation or a detailed risk explanation. Purpose changes language.
3. Audience knowledge | 受众已有知识
Ask:
- What do they already know?
- Which terms need defining?
- What can be assumed?
4. Expert audience | 专业受众
Can handle domain terminology and compressed background knowledge.
5. General audience | 普通受众
Needs technical ideas unpacked into everyday language.
6. Young learner | 年轻学习者
Needs shorter units, concrete examples and checking for understanding.
7. Parent audience | 家长受众
Often needs:
- clear diagnosis
- practical implications
- next action
- evidence without jargon overload
8. Colleague audience | 同事
Shared context allows more shorthand.
9. Manager audience | 管理者
Often values:
- issue
- impact
- evidence
- options
- recommendation
10. Friend audience | 朋友
More informal, more shared background, fewer explicit signposts.
11. Register spectrum | 语体光谱
- informal
- neutral
- professional
- formal
- specialist
12. Informal example | 非正式
I think the app’s a bit confusing. The buttons aren’t where you’d expect.
13. Professional neutral | 专业中性
The current interface creates avoidable navigation friction because several key controls are difficult to locate.
14. Specialist version | 专业版
The primary issue appears to be information architecture rather than visual styling; key actions have low discoverability.
15. Meaning core stays stable | 核心意思不变
All three versions describe the same underlying problem at different levels of abstraction and terminology.
16. Directness | 直接程度
Compare:
- Send me the file.
- Can you send me the file?
- Could you send me the file when you have a moment?
- Would it be possible to send the file by three?
17. Direct is not automatically rude | 直接不一定无礼
Urgency, hierarchy, relationship and culture affect what is appropriate.
18. Indirect is not automatically better | 间接不一定更高级
In emergencies or precise instructions, direct language can be safer.
19. Terminology control | 术语控制
Expert:
The result may be confounded by self-selection.
General:
The people who chose to participate may already have been different from those who did not.
20. Define then reuse | 定义后再复用
For mixed audiences, define a technical term once, then use it efficiently.
21. Evidence density | 证据密度
Different audiences need different amounts of evidence.
22. Executive summary style | 管理摘要风格
Three findings matter: response time improved, error rate did not, and the sample was small.
23. Technical detail style | 技术细节
May require method, sample, uncertainty and limitations.
24. Evidence hierarchy | 证据层次
Lead with the decision-relevant evidence; keep secondary detail available.
25. Layered explanation | 分层解释
- one-sentence answer
- short reason
- evidence
- technical detail if needed
26. Example: explaining correlation | 解释相关
Child:
Two things can happen together without one causing the other.
Adult general:
A correlation shows a relationship, but another factor may explain both variables.
Specialist:
The observational association does not identify a causal effect because residual confounding remains plausible.
27. Audience questions change depth | 受众追问决定深度
Start clear and expand if the listener asks for more.
28. Interaction style | 互动方式
Speaking is not a written essay delivered aloud.
29. Check understanding | 检查理解
- Does that distinction make sense?
- Would an example help?
- Should I go into the method?
30. Invite questions | 邀请问题
Which part would you like me to unpack?
31. Repair in real time | 实时修复
- Let me say that more simply.
- Let me be more precise.
- That’s too broad; I mean…
32. Audience signals | 受众信号
Watch/listen for:
- confusion
- agreement
- challenge
- boredom
- requests for detail
Do not overinterpret one facial expression; use interaction.
33. Reframe rather than repeat | 不要只重复原句
If the listener does not understand, change the explanation structure.
34. Example adaptation | 例子适应
Choose examples from the audience’s world.
35. Analogy control | 类比控制
Analogies clarify structure but can mislead if taken too literally.
36. State analogy limits | 说明类比边界
This analogy helps with the flow of information, but the systems are not identical.
37. Persuasion vs explanation | 说服 vs 解释
Persuasion selects and frames evidence toward a decision. Explanation aims first at accurate understanding.
38. Ethical persuasion | 负责任说服
Do not hide material limitations because the audience is non-specialist.
39. Correcting someone | 纠正别人
Direct:
That’s incorrect.
Constructive:
I think the distinction is slightly different: the study shows association, not causation.
40. High-stakes correction | 高风险纠正
When safety or accuracy matters, clarity may be more important than softening.
41. Disagreement across hierarchy | 层级中的分歧
- I see the evidence differently.
- Could we separate the performance result from the preference result?
- I think the current conclusion may be stronger than the data support.
42. Public speaking | 公共表达
Public audiences need:
- clear structure
- limited jargon
- explicit transitions
- memorable examples
43. Specialist presentation | 专业演讲
Experts may prefer compressed background and more method detail.
44. Mixed audience | 混合受众
Use layered language:
In simple terms… More technically…
45. Audience adaptation is not dumbing down | 不是“降低智商”
Clear general-audience language can require greater mastery than jargon.
46. Same idea, four registers | 同一意思四种语体
Core: The evidence is limited.
- friend: We don’t really know enough yet.
- parent: The current evidence is useful, but not strong enough for a firm conclusion.
- manager: The evidence supports a cautious decision, not a full rollout.
- specialist: External validity remains uncertain because the sample is narrow.
47. Audience-specific vocabulary | 受众词汇
Do not use technical precision that the listener cannot decode unless you define it.
48. Audience-specific examples | 受众例子
Use familiar domains without distorting the concept.
49. Audience-specific pacing | 语速和信息节奏
Specialist listeners may tolerate denser information; novice listeners need more pauses and checkpoints.
50. Audience-specific signposting | 路标
General/public:
- There are three points.
- The first is…
- The key takeaway is…
51. Specialist signposting | 专业路标
Can be more compressed:
- Turning to method…
- The main limitation concerns…
52. Story vs data | 故事 vs 数据
Stories make ideas memorable; data show scope. Use both responsibly.
53. Anecdote warning | 个案提醒
Do not let a vivid story pretend to be population-level evidence.
54. Register switching exercise | 语体切换练习
Explain selection bias to:
- a 12-year-old
- a parent
- a manager
- a researcher
55. Mandarin transfer: 中文礼貌和英语礼貌机制不同 | 不能逐字复制
English may use modals, question forms, softeners and explicit appreciation differently.
56. Mandarin transfer: 专业术语可以中英不对称 | 先功能后翻译
Choose English terminology by field usage, not direct character-by-character translation.
57. Listening practice | 受众识别
Take one explanation and identify clues showing whether it targets a novice, professional or specialist audience.
58. Speaking practice | 口语练习
Give the same two-minute explanation in three versions:
- general
- professional
- specialist
59. Question-handling practice | 回答问题
After each version, answer one challenge without changing the core evidence.
60. Error clinic | 常见问题
| Problem | Repair |
|---|---|
| I sound formal with everyone. | Match relationship and purpose. |
| I remove important limits for public audiences. | Simplify, don’t distort. |
| I repeat when misunderstood. | Reframe. |
| I use jargon to sound expert. | Define or remove it. |
| I soften safety messages too much. | Prioritise clarity. |
61. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断
- same speech for everyone → audience analysis.
- meaning changes across versions → semantic stability.
- general version becomes inaccurate → simplification control.
- questions cause collapse → spontaneous reformulation.
- register sounds unnatural → phraseology/pragmatics.
62. Seven-day training cycle | 七天训练
| Day 1 | audience/purpose mapping | 受众目的 |
| Day 2 | informal↔professional | 语体切换 |
| Day 3 | general↔specialist | 术语控制 |
| Day 4 | evidence density | 证据密度 |
| Day 5 | question handling | 问答 |
| Day 6 | real-time repair | 修复 |
| Day 7 | four-audience presentation | 综合 |
63. Self-test | 自测
Adapt one core idea across audiences without changing meaning; control directness, terminology, evidence density, examples, signposting and politeness; repair explanations in real time.
64. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
Assess whether the learner preserves the same proposition across audience versions.
Reward accurate simplification, not jargon.
For Mandarin speakers, compare communicative function and relationship management rather than translating politeness formulas directly.
65. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务
- Choose one complex issue.
- Explain it to a child.
- Explain it to a parent.
- Explain it to a manager.
- Explain it to a specialist.
- Keep the evidence stable.
- Change terminology appropriately.
- Answer one challenge in each version.
- Use different signposting and pacing.
- Explain why each adaptation fits its audience.
Next: Lesson No.088 | 下一课
The next lesson maps the transition from stable C1 performance toward C2-direction mastery: semantic precision, rapid audience adaptation, dense evidence, pragmatic nuance, synthesis across domains and control under unfamiliar conditions.
Lesson No.088 · From C1 Toward C2 · 从 C1 走向 C2
Reference floor: C1→C2-direction spoken flexibility; audience adaptation is treated as accurate meaning preservation, not merely formality switching.
