Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0071 · Lesson No.071 · B2-Direction Listening Beyond Literal Words
Listening to Implication, Attitude and Discourse | 听懂暗示、态度与篇章结构
At B2, listening is not only “What words did I hear?” It is also “What is the speaker doing with those words?”
Speakers signal agreement, doubt, correction, emphasis, concession, topic changes and conclusions through wording, discourse markers, rhythm and context. These signals are not perfectly universal, so good listeners combine language clues rather than trusting one tone of voice alone.
这一课训练“听意思背后的结构”:听出暗示、态度、转折、修正、让步、重点和结论,而不是只抓单词。

The B2 listening map | B2 听力地图
- literal meaning
- speaker purpose
- stance
- implication
- agreement/disagreement
- correction
- hesitation
- concession
- emphasis
- topic movement
- summary/conclusion
- multi-speaker tracking
1. Literal meaning vs implied meaning | 字面 vs 暗示
Speaker says:
“It’s quite expensive.”
Possible implication in a buying discussion: the speaker may be against choosing it.
But implication depends on context. Do not infer more than the situation supports.
2. Ask: what is the speaker doing? | 说话者在做什么?
- agreeing
- challenging
- softening
- correcting
- changing topic
- summarising
- buying time
3. Stance words | 立场词
- I think…
- I suppose…
- I’m not convinced…
- probably…
- apparently…
- to be honest…
4. Strong vs weak stance | 强弱立场
- It must be… → strong deduction
- It might be… → possibility
- I guess… → tentative personal view
5. Agreement markers | 同意标记
- Exactly.
- That’s true.
- I agree.
- That’s a good point.
6. Partial agreement | 部分同意
- That’s true, but…
- I agree to some extent.
- I can see that, although…
Listen for what comes after the agreement marker.
7. Polite disagreement | 礼貌不同意
- I’m not sure I agree.
- I see it differently.
- I’m not convinced that…
8. Contrast markers | 转折标记
- but
- however
- although
- on the other hand
- having said that
The information after a contrast marker often changes the direction of the argument.
9. Concession | 让步
It’s cheaper, admittedly, but it takes twice as long.
The speaker accepts one point, then limits its importance.
10. Correction markers | 修正标记
- Actually…
- Sorry, I mean…
- Or rather…
- Let me correct that…
11. Self-repair | 自我修复
We met on Tuesday—sorry, Wednesday.
The corrected information is the one to keep.
12. Reformulation | 换一种说法
- In other words…
- What I mean is…
- To put it another way…
These markers can help you recover meaning if the first explanation was difficult.
13. Example markers | 举例标记
- for example
- for instance
- say…
- take X, for example
14. Cause/result markers | 因果标记
- because
- so
- therefore
- as a result
- which means…
15. Emphasis markers | 强调标记
- the main point is…
- what matters most is…
- especially…
- in particular…
16. Summary markers | 总结标记
- overall
- in short
- so basically…
- to sum up…
17. Topic shift | 转话题
- by the way
- moving on to…
- as for…
- speaking of…
18. Return to topic | 回主线
- anyway…
- going back to…
- as I was saying…
19. Hesitation | 犹豫
- well…
- let me think…
- sort of…
- I suppose…
Hesitation may signal planning, uncertainty, politeness or careful wording. Context matters.
20. Filled pauses | 填充停顿
uh, um often give the speaker planning time. Do not treat every pause as confusion.
21. False starts | 重新起句
What I wanted—what I mean is, we need more time.
Natural speech is not a written paragraph read aloud.
22. Repetition for emphasis or repair | 重复
Speakers may repeat a key word because it matters or because they are rebuilding the sentence.
23. Intonation as one clue | 语调只是一个线索
Rising/falling patterns can contribute to attitude or turn-taking, but they vary by speaker, accent and context. Combine them with wording.
24. Stress and contrast | 重音与对比
I said the BLUE one.
Stress can signal which information is being corrected or contrasted.
25. Reduced forms | 弱读与缩略
B2 listeners need to recognise familiar grammar inside fast speech:
- would’ve
- could’ve
- should’ve
- I’d
- we’ve
26. Do not decode every word | 不要逐词解码
Listen for discourse structure first: topic, position, contrast, example, conclusion.
27. First-listening task | 第一遍任务
Write only:
- topic
- speaker positions
- major change/contrast
- conclusion
28. Second-listening task | 第二遍任务
Add evidence, examples, numbers and corrections.
29. Multi-speaker tracking | 多人对话追踪
| Speaker | Position | Evidence | Change? |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | supports option 1 | cost | partly |
| B | supports option 2 | time | no |
30. Speaker can change position | 立场会改变
Listen for:
- Actually, you may be right.
- I hadn’t considered that.
- In that case…
31. Implied refusal | 委婉拒绝
Question: Can you join us tonight?
Answer: I’ve got a very early start tomorrow.
Possible implication: probably no. Context and shared expectations create the inference.
32. Implied criticism | 暗示批评
Well, the report was due yesterday.
May imply dissatisfaction, depending on context and delivery.
33. Implied recommendation | 暗示建议
The train is usually much faster at this time.
In a travel-choice context, the speaker may be recommending the train.
34. Avoid mind-reading | 不要过度猜测
Inference should be tied to words, context and discourse—not assumptions about personality or hidden motives.
35. Attitude vocabulary | 态度词汇
- enthusiastic
- doubtful
- reluctant
- concerned
- neutral
- critical
Use these only when supported by language clues.
36. Fact vs attitude | 事实 vs 态度
A speaker may report a fact neutrally or frame it with approval/disapproval.
37. Apparently / supposedly | 来源距离
Apparently signals reported information. Supposedly can sometimes carry sceptical distance. Context matters.
38. To be fair | 平衡观点
To be fair, the team had very little time.
This often introduces a balancing point.
39. In fact | 修正预期
I thought it would be difficult. In fact, it was quite straightforward.
40. Actually | 多种功能
Actually can correct, contrast, soften or introduce unexpected information. Listen to the surrounding sentence.
41. Mandarin transfer: 暗示方式不完全对应 | 不逐字翻
English implication often relies on modal stance, discourse markers and shared context. Translate the communicative function, not only the words.
42. Mandarin transfer: 明确主语与立场 | 跟踪谁认为
In multi-speaker English, keep a clear map of who supports, doubts or changes each position.
43. Listening transcript practice A | 听力文本 A
A: The bus is cheaper.
B: True, but the train is more reliable in the morning.
A: That’s fair. Actually, if we need to arrive before nine, the train probably makes more sense.
Track: concession → contrast → position change → conclusion.
44. Listening transcript practice B | 听力文本 B
A: Did the update solve the problem?
B: Well, it fixed the login issue. The payment error is still there, though.
A: So basically, we’re only halfway there.
Track: hesitation → partial success → contrast → summary.
45. Listening transcript practice C | 听力文本 C
A: Can you finish this tonight?
B: I’ve already got two deadlines before tomorrow morning.
A: Right. Let’s move it to Friday.
Identify the implied answer and the evidence that supports it.
46. Note-taking practice | 笔记
Do not write the dialogue. Write:
bus cheap / train reliable AM → deadline before 9 → A changes → train
47. Error clinic | 常见错误
| Problem | Repair |
|---|---|
| I hear words but miss the turn in argument. | Track contrast markers. |
| I infer attitude from tone alone. | Combine wording + context + delivery. |
| I keep corrected information. | Listen for repair markers. |
| I write too much. | Note positions and discourse structure. |
48. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断
- words disappear → sound decoding.
- words clear but purpose unclear → discourse-marker problem.
- speaker positions get mixed → multi-speaker tracking.
- implication guesses are unreliable → evidence/context problem.
- notes cause missed speech → note-selection problem.
49. Retrieval lab | 提取练习
- 说实话…… → ______
- 换句话说…… → ______
- 话虽如此…… → ______
- 回到刚才的问题…… → ______
- 总的来说…… → ______
Suggested answers: To be honest… / In other words… / Having said that… / Going back to the question… / Overall…
50. Seven-day training cycle | 七天训练
| Day 1 | stance markers | 立场 |
| Day 2 | contrast/concession | 转折让步 |
| Day 3 | repair/reformulation | 修正 |
| Day 4 | implication | 暗示 |
| Day 5 | multi-speaker maps | 多人 |
| Day 6 | selective notes | 笔记 |
| Day 7 | 8-minute natural discussion analysis | 综合 |
51. Self-test | 自测
Identify stance, concession, correction, implication, topic shifts and conclusions; track two speakers; explain evidence for attitude judgements; distinguish literal content from reasonable inference; take selective discourse notes.
52. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
Use short natural dialogues and ask learners to explain the evidence behind an inference.
Do not mark one prosodic pattern as a universal emotion rule. Accent, culture, personality and context vary.
For Mandarin speakers, make discourse markers and speaker-reference tracking explicit during early B2 listening work.
53. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务
- Listen to a 5–7 minute two-speaker discussion.
- Map both positions.
- Record three contrast/concession markers.
- Identify one correction.
- Identify one reasonable implication.
- Explain the evidence for that inference.
- Track any position change.
- Write a 100-word summary.
- Do not use a transcript until after the first two passes.
- Diagnose the first listening weak link.
