Advanced Modal Meaning and Stance | 高级情态意义与立场
She should be here soon. He must have forgotten. You could have told me. Would you mind waiting a moment?
At B2 direction, modal verbs are not only grammar forms. They show how strongly you believe something, how much pressure you place on another person, how certain an inference is, and how politely or critically you frame your stance.

1. Possibility | 可能性
- may
- might
- could
She might be at work.
2. Probability | 较大概率
- probably
- likely to
- should
The train should arrive soon. = expected, not guaranteed.
3. Strong deduction | 强推断
- must
- can’t
He must be tired. / That can’t be right.
4. Should as expectation | should 表预期
- The package should arrive tomorrow.
- She should be home by six.
This is different from advice.
5. Should as advice | should 表建议
- You should back up the file.
6. Should as criticism in past | should have
- You should have checked first.
This expresses that a past action would have been better.
7. Shouldn’t have | 本不该
- I shouldn’t have sent that message so quickly.
8. Could have | 本来可以
- You could have called me.
- We could have taken the earlier train.
Depending on tone, this can sound neutral or critical.
9. Might have | 可能已经
- She might have missed the train.
Past possibility/deduction.
10. Must have | 一定已经
- He must have forgotten the meeting.
Strong past deduction.
11. Can’t have | 不可能已经
- She can’t have sent the file; the system was offline.
12. Could have = unused opportunity OR possibility | 两种功能
- We could have left earlier. → unused option
- It could have been a software error. → possible past explanation
Context decides.
13. Must as obligation | 必须
- You must show ID.
14. Have to | 客观要求
- I have to submit this by Friday.
must and have to overlap, but source of obligation and register can differ.
15. Don’t have to | 不必
- You don’t have to come early.
This means no obligation—not prohibition.
16. Mustn’t | 禁止
- You mustn’t enter this area.
17. Mustn’t vs don’t have to | 禁止 vs 不必
- mustn’t = not allowed
- don’t have to = optional
18. Needn’t | 不需要
- You needn’t bring anything. — more formal/BrE recognition
19. Could as polite suggestion | could 建议
- You could try restarting the device.
20. Might want to | 委婉建议
- You might want to check the deadline again.
21. Would for politeness | would 礼貌
- Would you mind waiting?
- Would you be able to send the file?
22. Could for polite request | could 请求
- Could you open the window?
23. Can for neutral request | can 请求
- Can you send it today?
24. Will for willingness | will 意愿
- Will you help me with this?
- He won’t listen. → unwillingness in some contexts
25. Would for hypothetical willingness | would
- I would help if I had time.
26. May for formal permission | may 许可
- You may begin.
27. Can for everyday permission | can 许可
- You can leave early today.
28. Be supposed to | 按规定/预期应该
- We’re supposed to meet at six.
- You’re not supposed to park here.
29. Be meant to | 本来应该/设计用于
- This button is meant to reset the system.

Do not use must from weak evidence. Strong language needs strong support.

- You could have checked. → milder
- You should have checked. → clearer criticism
- You were required to check. → formal obligation fact
33. Soften criticism | 软化批评
- It might have been better to check first.
- We could probably have handled that differently.
34. Shared responsibility | 共同责任
We should have confirmed the details earlier.
This can be more constructive than assigning blame without evidence.
35. Reported stance | 转述立场
- She said the train might be delayed.
- He explained that the form had to be completed.
36. Modal passive | 情态被动
- The form must be signed.
- The issue could be resolved today.
- The result should be checked.
37. Perfect modal passive | 完成情态被动
- The file should have been backed up.
- The problem might have been caused by the update.
38. Mandarin transfer: 应该 | should 不总一样
应该 can express advice, expectation or probability. English chooses forms by function.
39. Mandarin transfer: 必须 | must/have to
English distinguishes internal/formal force, external requirement and register more explicitly in some contexts.

Choose based on certainty, sentence pattern and context—not one-to-one translation.

The meeting should finish by four, but it might run late if the discussion continues. Everyone has to submit their notes afterwards. The final document must be approved before publication.
Classify expectation, possibility, obligation and formal requirement.

Teach modal verbs by communicative function and force, not isolated translations.
Ask learners to justify why a stronger or weaker modal fits the evidence and relationship.
For Mandarin speakers, separate the multiple English functions often covered by 应该、可能 and 必须.
