Summarising and Note-Taking | 总结与笔记
Do not copy everything. Reduce information without losing the important meaning.
不要全部抄下来。把信息压缩,但不要丢掉最重要的意思。
At B1 direction, language gets longer. You need to listen, read, remember, organise and respond. Notes help you hold the structure; summaries help you reconstruct the meaning.
这一课训练两种不同能力:笔记用来抓住信息结构,总结用来用更短的话重新表达核心意思。

The information-control map | 信息控制路线
- main idea
- key details
- structure
- keywords
- abbreviations
- symbols and arrows
- listening notes
- reading notes
- one-line summary
- paragraph summary
- whole-text summary
- paraphrase instead of copy
- fact vs opinion

1. Notes and summaries are different | 笔记和总结不同
Notes can be fragments, symbols and keywords. Summaries should be clear sentences that reproduce the main meaning.
2. Notes can be incomplete | 笔记可以不完整
Example:
train delayed 20m → bus option → arrive 9:10
This is useful as a note, but not as a polished summary.
3. Summary must make sense alone | 总结要独立可读
The train was delayed by twenty minutes, so the traveller considered taking the bus but eventually arrived at 9:10.
4. Main idea first | 先抓主旨
Ask:
- What is this mainly about?
- What problem/topic is central?
- What is the speaker/writer trying to explain?
5. Key details second | 再抓关键细节
- who
- where
- when
- what happened
- why
- result
6. Not every detail is key | 不是所有细节都重要
A colour, name or example may be unimportant unless the task depends on it.
7. Structure is a note-taking shortcut | 结构就是笔记捷径
Common structures:
- problem → cause → solution
- opinion → reasons → example
- event → response → result
- compare A/B → choice
8. Keywords | 关键词
Write content words, not every grammar word.
- meeting moved 2→4
- same room
- reply required
9. Abbreviations | 缩写
Create simple personal abbreviations:
- mtg = meeting
- info = information
- prob = problem
- sol = solution
- ex = example
Use abbreviations you can still understand later.
10. Symbols | 符号
- → result/change
- ↑ increase
- ↓ decrease
- + advantage/addition
- − disadvantage
- ? unclear/question
11. Numbers should stay exact | 数字保持准确
Do not paraphrase a phone number, price, deadline or time.
12. Names may need spelling | 姓名可能要拼写
Use initials temporarily if speaker continues, then confirm full name later.
13. Listening notes: first pass | 听力第一遍
Write only:
- topic
- main point
- one or two anchors
14. Listening notes: second pass | 第二遍
Add:
- key numbers
- reasons
- examples
- change/result
15. Do not write full sentences while listening | 听的时候不要一直写整句
Full-sentence note-taking can make you miss the next part.
16. Leave spaces | 留空
If you miss one point, leave a gap and continue listening.
17. Use arrows for sequence | 用箭头表示过程
rain → train delay → taxi too $$$ → wait → home 9pm
18. Use columns for comparison | 用表格比较
| Train | Bus |
|---|---|
| faster | cheaper |
| more reliable | closer stop |
19. Use headings | 用小标题
- Problem
- Reasons
- Options
- Decision
20. Reading notes: paragraph job | 阅读笔记先记段落功能
For each paragraph, write 3–7 words:
- P1: problem introduced
- P2: two causes
- P3: possible solutions
21. Margin question | 边读边问
After a paragraph: What job did this paragraph do?
22. Highlight selectively | 不要整页都划重点
If everything is highlighted, nothing is prioritised.
23. One-line summary | 一句话总结
Frame:
This section mainly explains ______.
24. Paragraph summary | 段落总结
Combine:
- main point
- one key supporting detail
25. Whole-text summary | 全文总结
Useful structure:
- topic/main claim
- main supporting points
- result/conclusion
26. Summary should be shorter | 总结必须更短
If a 300-word text becomes a 250-word summary, you have not reduced enough.
27. Do not copy sentences blindly | 不要整句照抄
Read → close text → explain meaning in simpler English → check accuracy.
28. Paraphrase with simpler words | 用更简单的话改写
Original: The service was temporarily unavailable.
Summary: The service stopped working for a short time.
29. Keep technical terms when necessary | 必要术语保留
Do not replace a precise term if the replacement changes the meaning.
30. Fact vs opinion in notes | 笔记分事实与观点
- F: train leaves 8:30
- O: train is best option
31. Speaker opinion | 说话者观点
Use markers:
- speaker thinks…
- writer prefers…
- main recommendation…
32. Action items | 行动项
For work/school notes, mark:
- WHO
- ACTION
- DEADLINE
Example: Mei → send revised file → Fri 5pm.
33. Meeting notes | 会议笔记
- decision
- owner
- deadline
- open question
34. Class notes | 课堂笔记
- concept
- rule
- example
- question
35. Vocabulary notes | 词汇笔记
Record:

- result
37. Opinion-text notes | 观点文笔记
- claim
- reason 1
- example
- reason 2
- counterpoint
- conclusion
38. Summary signal words | 总结连接词
- mainly
- first
- also
- however
- overall
39. “Overall” | overall
Useful for final summary judgement:
Overall, the writer recommends shorter daily practice.
40. Avoid adding your own opinion | 总结里不要乱加自己观点
A summary represents the source first. Your response can come afterwards.
41. Mandarin transfer: copying feels safe | 逐字抄写的安全感
Chinese-speaking learners may also rely on translation or copying. The skill target is meaning reduction, not language substitution.
42. Mandarin transfer: notes can stay partly bilingual | 笔记可阶段性双语
At first, one difficult concept may have a short Chinese label. Over time, move familiar notes into English.
43. Listening practice | 听力笔记练习
Scenario: meeting moves from 2 to 4; same room; David sends new file; Mei confirms attendance.
Good notes:
mtg 2→4 / room same / David: new file / Mei: confirm
44. Reading practice | 阅读总结练习
Short daily study is easier to maintain than one long weekly session. It also creates more frequent retrieval opportunities. However, some tasks need longer periods, so a mixed schedule may work best.
Summary: Daily study is easier to maintain, but longer sessions are still useful for some tasks, so a mixed schedule may be best.
45. Note-to-summary transformation | 从笔记到总结
Notes:
bus cheaper / train faster + reliable / Mei train early mtg / bus quiet days
Summary:
Mei chooses the train when time matters because it is faster and more reliable, but she sometimes uses the cheaper bus on quieter days.
46. Error clinic | 常见错误
| Problem | Better move |
|---|---|
| I write every word. | Capture structure and keywords. |
| I miss later information while writing. | Use fragments/symbols. |
| My summary copies the source. | Close source and paraphrase. |
| I add my opinion. | Separate summary from response. |
| My notes are too cryptic. | Use abbreviations you can decode later. |
47. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断
- I cannot find main idea → gist problem.
- I note too much → prioritisation problem.
- I forget structure → headings/diagram problem.
- I can note but not summarise → paraphrase/cohesion problem.
- I copy source language → reformulation problem.
48. Retrieval lab | 提取练习
- 主旨 → ______
- 关键细节 → ______
- 原因 → ______
- 结果 → ______
- 行动项 → ______
- 总结 → ______
Suggested answers: main idea / key detail / cause / result / action item / summary.
49. Ten-minute daily practice | 每天十分钟
| 2 min | skim/listen for gist | 主旨 |
| 2 min | keywords | 关键词 |
| 2 min | structure notes | 结构 |

| Day 6 | meeting/action notes | 实用 |
| Day 7 | 2-minute input → notes → summary | 综合 |
51. Self-test | 自测
Explain the difference between notes and summaries; identify main idea and three key details; create keyword notes; use arrows/abbreviations; summarise one paragraph; summarise one 300-word text; separate fact from opinion; identify action items; paraphrase without copying.
52. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师
Do not reward the longest notes. Reward recoverable, useful information.
Ask learners to explain their notes aloud. If they cannot reconstruct the meaning, the notes failed.
For Mandarin speakers, bilingual notes can be a transition tool, but familiar concepts should gradually move into English.
53. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务
- Listen to two minutes of English.
- Take keyword notes.
- Recover five details.
- Read a 500-word text.
- Label paragraph jobs.
- Write a 60-word summary.
- Do not copy full source sentences.
- Separate source opinion from your own.
- Extract action items.
- Explain the content from notes without reopening the source.
