How to Learn Basic English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.037 | Present Perfect for Life Experience | 用现在完成时谈经历

Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0037 · Lesson No.037 · A1 → A2 Grammar Bridge

Present Perfect for Life Experience | 用现在完成时谈经历

Have you ever been to Japan? Yes, I have. I went there in 2024.
你去过日本吗?去过。我在 2024 年去的。

This lesson introduces one important use of the present perfect: talking about life experience when the exact finished time is not the main point.

这一课只先掌握现在完成时最实用的一块:谈“有没有过这种经历”,而不是一次把所有现在完成时规则塞进来。

The core contrast is simple: experience first, finished time second.

The lesson map | 本课路线

  • have/has + past participle
  • Have you ever…?
  • Yes, I have / No, I haven’t
  • I’ve never…
  • been vs gone
  • regular and irregular participles
  • experience vs finished past time
  • present perfect → simple past follow-up
  • already / yet / just
  • before / once / twice
  • Mandarin 过 vs English present perfect

1. The basic form | 基本结构

have/has + past participle

  • I have visited.
  • She has visited.
  • We have seen.
  • He has eaten.

have changes with the subject; the participle carries the lexical verb form.

2. I have / I’ve | I have 的缩写

  • I have been → I’ve been
  • I have seen → I’ve seen
  • I have tried → I’ve tried

Contractions are very common in speech.

3. She has / She’s | She’s 可能有两种意思

  • She’s tired. = She is tired.
  • She’s been there. = She has been there.

Context and the following word tell you the meaning.

4. What is a past participle? | 什么是过去分词?

It is the verb form used after have/has in the present perfect.

visitvisitedvisited
gowentgone
seesawseen
eatateeaten

The middle column is simple past; the last column is past participle.

5. Regular verbs | 规则动词

  • visit → visited → visited
  • work → worked → worked
  • try → tried → tried

For many regular verbs, simple past and participle look the same.

6. Irregular participles | 不规则过去分词

  • go → went → gone
  • be → was/were → been
  • see → saw → seen
  • eat → ate → eaten
  • take → took → taken
  • write → wrote → written
  • do → did → done
  • have → had → had

Learn common three-part sets as chunks.

7. Life experience | 人生经历

Use present perfect when asking whether something has happened at any time before now and the exact finished time is not the focus.

  • I’ve been to Japan.
  • She’s tried Korean food.
  • We’ve seen that film.

8. Have you ever…? | 你有没有曾经……?

  • Have you ever been to Japan?
  • Have you ever tried sushi?
  • Have you ever travelled alone?

ever means at any time in your life up to now.

9. Short answers | 简答

  • Yes, I have.
  • No, I haven’t.
  • Yes, she has.
  • No, she hasn’t.

Do not answer Yes, I ever.

10. Never | 从未

  • I’ve never been to Canada.
  • She’s never tried coffee.
  • We’ve never met.

never already carries negative meaning. Do not add not.

11. “I haven’t never…” is wrong in standard English | 不要双重否定

  • I haven’t never been there. ✗
  • I’ve never been there. ✓
  • I haven’t been there. ✓

12. Been to | 去过并已经回来

  • I’ve been to Seoul twice.
  • Have you ever been to London?

been to usually means the person visited and is not there now.

13. Gone to | 去了,还没回来/人在那里

  • Anna has gone to the supermarket.

This usually means Anna is away now or on the way.

14. Been vs gone | 去过 vs 去了

  • Mei has been to Tokyo. → life experience; she came back.
  • Mei has gone to Tokyo. → she is away now.

This distinction matters.

15. Experience first | 先说经历

A: Have you ever been to Thailand?
B: Yes, I have.

At this stage, no finished time has been given.

16. Then switch to simple past for the finished event | 然后用一般过去说具体时间

A: When did you go?
B: I went in 2025.

Once you say in 2025, use simple past.

17. Present perfect + finished past time is usually wrong here | 不和明确过去时间直接搭配

  • I’ve been to Japan in 2024. ✗ for this meaning
  • I went to Japan in 2024. ✓
  • I’ve been to Japan. ✓

18. Yesterday belongs to simple past | yesterday 用一般过去

  • I saw Anna yesterday. ✓
  • I’ve seen Anna yesterday. ✗

19. Last week / last year | last + 时间

  • I visited Penang last year.
  • We watched the film last week.

Finished past time → simple past.

20. Ever + experience | ever 常见位置

Have + subject + ever + participle…?

  • Have you ever eaten durian?
  • Has she ever flown alone?

21. Never position | never 常见位置

subject + have/has + never + participle

  • I have never driven a car.
  • She has never seen snow.

22. Before | 以前

  • I’ve seen this before.
  • Have you been here before?

before can describe unspecified earlier experience.

23. Once / twice | 一次 / 两次

  • I’ve been there once.
  • She’s tried it twice.

24. Many times | 很多次

  • I’ve watched this film many times.

The exact dates are not important.

25. Already | 已经

  • I’ve already eaten.
  • She’s already finished.

already often says something happened earlier than expected or is complete now.

26. Yet in questions | yet 用在问句

  • Have you finished yet?
  • Has the train arrived yet?

27. Yet in negatives | yet 用在否定

  • I haven’t finished yet.
  • She hasn’t arrived yet.

yet often comes near the end.

28. Just | 刚刚

  • I’ve just arrived.
  • She’s just called me.

In many varieties of English, present perfect commonly describes very recent events with just. Usage can vary by region.

29. Present result | 现在结果

  • I’ve lost my key. → result now: I don’t have it.
  • She’s broken her glasses. → result now: glasses are broken.

This is another important present-perfect use. We introduce it lightly here.

30. Finished past event | 已结束过去事件

  • I lost my key yesterday, but I found it later.

Finished past story → simple past.

31. Have you ever + food | 食物经历

  • Have you ever tried Korean barbecue?
  • Have you ever eaten raw fish?

Keep examples culturally neutral and learner-chosen.

32. Have you ever + travel | 旅行经历

  • Have you ever travelled by overnight train?
  • Have you ever visited a museum abroad?

33. Have you ever + learning | 学习经历

  • Have you ever studied another language?
  • Have you ever taken an online course?

34. Have you ever + work | 工作经历

  • Have you ever worked from home?
  • Have you ever given a presentation? — recognition/useful

35. Follow-up questions | 追问

Present perfect opens the topic; simple past develops the event.

  • When did you do it?
  • Where did you go?
  • Who did you go with?
  • Did you like it?

36. A complete experience exchange | 完整经历对话

A: Have you ever been to South Korea?
B: Yes, I have.
A: When did you go?
B: I went last year.
A: What did you do there?
B: I visited Seoul and Busan.

37. Not yet | 还没有

  • Have you tried it?
  • Not yet.

Short, natural response.

38. I haven’t… yet | 还没……

  • I haven’t visited Japan yet.
  • I haven’t finished the book yet.

39. For and since: recognition only | for/since 先认识

  • I’ve lived here for two years.
  • I’ve lived here since 2024.

This use describes a situation continuing to now and deserves deeper study later. Do not confuse it with finished experience.

40. For = duration | for 表时长

  • for two hours
  • for three years

41. Since = starting point | since 表起点

  • since Monday
  • since 2024

42. Mandarin 过 and present perfect | 中文“过”与现在完成时

Chinese often marks experience:

  • 我去过日本。 → I’ve been to Japan.
  • 我吃过这个。 → I’ve tried/eaten this before.

This is a useful mapping, but not every 过 sentence uses the same English structure automatically.

43. Mandarin time context can replace tense marking | 中文依靠语境更多

English often requires a stronger grammatical choice between:

  • Have you ever been…?
  • When did you go…?

The first asks experience; the second asks a finished event.

44. Do not use “have” twice | 不要重复 have

  • I have have been. ✗
  • I have been. ✓

45. Do not use simple past after have | have 后不用 went/saw 等过去式

  • I have went. ✗
  • I have gone. ✓
  • I have saw. ✗
  • I have seen. ✓

46. Listening: contractions | 听缩写

  • I’ve been
  • she’s seen
  • we’ve tried
  • haven’t / hasn’t

The auxiliary may be weak; listen for the whole chunk.

47. Listening: been | been 的弱读

Pronunciation varies by accent. Learn to recognise natural connected speech rather than one rigid pronunciation target.

59. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Teach present perfect against simple past from the first day. The contrast is more useful than isolated conjugation drills.

Use a two-stage interview: Have you ever…? opens experience; When did you…? moves to the finished event.

For Mandarin speakers, use 过 as a helpful bridge but do not claim a one-to-one tense equivalence.

Keep the initial scope narrow. Experience and current result are enough before adding every present-perfect use.

  3. Use never correctly.

  7. Use already, yet and just.
