How to Learn Basic English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.036 | From A1 to A2 | 从 A1 走向 A2

Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0036 · Lesson No.036 · 零基础英语第三十六课 · A1 → A2 Transition

From A1 to A2 | 从 A1 走向 A2

A2 is not “hard English”. It is a wider, more independent version of the English system you already have.
A2 不是突然进入“很难的英语”,而是把你已经有的英语系统变得更宽、更稳、更独立。

A1 gives you survival control: simple identity, needs, questions, time, shopping, travel, messages and repair. The bridge toward A2 asks you to connect those skills for longer, handle more variation, explain simple reasons and past events, and depend less on translation.

这一课不是一次“大升级考试”,而是一张过渡地图:哪些已经稳定,哪些需要扩展,下一阶段应该怎样训练。

The A1→A2 map | A1 到 A2 路线

  • stabilise A1 first
  • longer listening
  • longer speaking turns
  • connected reading
  • linked writing
  • wider vocabulary
  • past/future expansion
  • reasons and explanations
  • comparisons and choices
  • greater independence
  • less translation dependence
  • better repair and paraphrase

1. A1 stability comes first | 先把 A1 稳住

Before adding more grammar, ask whether the core system works quickly enough.

  • Can you ask basic questions?
  • Can you understand time and numbers?
  • Can you repair a misunderstanding?
  • Can you describe yesterday and tomorrow?

2. Do not move up by abandoning basics | 升级不是丢掉基础

A2 still uses:

  • I need…
  • Can you…?
  • Where is…?
  • I don’t understand.

The difference is range and connection.

3. A1 sentence → A2 connected idea | 从单句到连接

A1:

I went to the shop.

Growing toward A2:

I went to the shop because I needed a new jacket, but they didn’t have my size.

4. Add reason | 加原因

  • because
  • so

Example: I stayed home because I was tired.

5. Add contrast | 加对比

  • but
  • however — recognition

Example: The room is small, but it’s comfortable.

6. Add sequence | 加顺序

  • first
  • then
  • after that
  • finally

This supports longer stories and explanations.

7. Speaking target: one minute → two minutes | 口语从一分钟到两分钟

Start with familiar topics:

  • your routine
  • last weekend
  • future plan
  • travel experience
  • shopping problem

8. Keep structure while length grows | 长度增加,结构不能散

Use a simple speaking frame:

  1. main point
  2. detail
  3. reason/example
  4. ending

9. Listening target: more than one sentence | 听力从单句到短段

Move from isolated phrases to 20–60 second everyday exchanges.

Listen for:

  • topic
  • people
  • time
  • main action
  • change/problem

10. Listening without full transcript dependence | 减少文本依赖

Try:

  1. first listen without text
  2. second listen for detail
  3. transcript check
  4. final listen without text

11. Reading target: short connected texts | 阅读短段落

Move beyond signs and messages into:

  • short stories
  • simple articles
  • reviews
  • instructions
  • travel descriptions

12. Read for paragraph job | 读每段的作用

Ask:

  • Is this introducing?
  • giving a reason?
  • describing?
  • giving an example?
  • concluding?

13. Writing target: linked paragraph | 从短信息到段落

Basic paragraph:

  1. topic sentence
  2. two or three details
  3. one reason/example
  4. ending sentence

14. Example paragraph | 示例段落

I usually take the train to work because it is faster than the bus. The station is near my home, so the journey is easy. Yesterday the train was delayed, and I arrived twenty minutes late. I called my manager before I arrived.

15. Vocabulary target: depth, not only size | 词汇要“深”

For a new word, know:

  • meaning
  • pronunciation
  • word family
  • collocation
  • one sentence

16. Widen familiar topics first | 先扩熟悉主题

Example: transport.

A1:

  • bus, train, taxi

Growing toward A2:

  • route
  • journey
  • delay
  • transfer
  • traffic
  • convenient

17. Describe opinions | 表达简单观点

  • I think…
  • I prefer…
  • In my opinion… — recognition/useful
  • For me…

18. Give reasons for preferences | 说明为什么

I prefer the train because it’s faster and more comfortable.

19. Compare options | 比较选择

  • cheaper than
  • more convenient than
  • better for me
  • easier to use

20. Superlatives begin to matter | 最高级认识

  • the cheapest
  • the fastest
  • the best

This is a useful A2-direction structure.

21. Stronger past-time control | 扩展过去表达

A1:

I went to the museum.

Growing toward A2:

I went to the museum last Saturday. It was busy, but I enjoyed the exhibition because it was interesting.

22. More irregular verbs | 扩展不规则过去式

Grow gradually:

  • buy → bought
  • bring → brought
  • think → thought
  • find → found
  • leave → left
  • feel → felt

23. Past continuous recognition | 过去进行认识

  • I was working when she called.

This structure becomes useful for background + event. Learn it gradually after simple past is stable.

24. Life experience language | 经历表达

You will begin meeting structures such as:

  • I’ve been to…
  • I’ve never tried…

These present-perfect patterns deserve their own later lesson; do not mix them randomly with simple past.

25. Stronger future control | 扩展未来

  • going to — intention
  • will — prediction/decision
  • present continuous — arrangement
  • simple present — schedule

At A2, choose more confidently among them.

26. Plans with conditions | 有条件的计划

  • If it rains, we’ll stay inside.
  • If the train is late, I’ll call you.

Basic first conditional becomes increasingly useful.

27. Should | 建议

  • You should check the time.
  • We should leave early.

Useful for simple advice.

28. Could | 可能/礼貌/建议认识

  • Could you help me?
  • We could take the bus.

could has several functions; learn each in context.

29. Have to / should / can | 义务建议能力

Compare:

  • You have to submit today. — requirement
  • You should submit early. — advice
  • You can submit online. — possibility/permission

30. Quantity expansion | 数量表达扩展

  • a few
  • a little
  • too much
  • too many
  • enough

31. A few vs a little | 少量可数/不可数

  • a few books
  • a little water

32. Too much / too many | 太多

  • too much traffic
  • too many people

33. More descriptive language | 更丰富描述

Move from one adjective to useful combinations:

  • quite busy
  • really useful
  • a little difficult
  • much better

34. Explain problems in more detail | 更完整说明问题

A1:

The link doesn’t work.

Growing toward A2:

The link in yesterday’s email doesn’t work. I tried it twice on my phone and computer. Could you send a new one?

35. Explain solutions | 说明解决方案

  • First, I tried…
  • Then I…
  • It still didn’t work, so…

36. Social conversations become longer | 社交对话变长

Move from greeting only to:

  • greeting
  • small talk
  • follow-up question
  • opinion
  • closing

37. Ask follow-up questions | 追问

  • Really?
  • What happened next?
  • How was it?
  • Why did you choose that?

38. Give fuller answers | 回答更完整

Question: How was your weekend?

A1: Good.

Growing toward A2: It was good. I visited my sister and we had lunch together.

39. Paraphrase becomes essential | 换说法更重要

If you do not know a word, explain it with words you know. A2 independence grows from this skill.

40. Use examples to explain | 用例子解释

  • It’s a kind of…
  • For example…
  • It’s something you use to…

41. Less Chinese before checking | 逐步延迟中文

New sequence:

  1. English first
  2. guess from context
  3. check English definition/example if possible
  4. use Chinese only if still unclear

42. Chinese remains a tool, not a failure | 中文仍是工具

The goal is not to ban Chinese. The goal is to stop needing it for every sentence.

43. English-English micro-definitions | 简单英英解释

Example:

delay = when something happens later than planned

Simple definitions strengthen English-to-English thinking.

44. Read more without translating | 阅读减少逐字翻译

Read one short paragraph. Mark only words that block the main meaning.

45. Listen longer before stopping | 听完再判断

Move from one sentence to a short exchange before pausing.

46. Speak through minor errors | 小错误不要停

If the message is clear and the error is small, finish the thought first. Repair important errors afterwards.

47. Writing accuracy after drafting | 先写后查

  1. write message
  2. check verbs
  3. check time
  4. check noun forms
  5. check punctuation

48. A1→A2 diagnostic: listening | 听力诊断

Can you understand a short everyday exchange without seeing the text first?

  • Green: gist + key details
  • Amber: gist only
  • Red: isolated words only

49. Diagnostic: speaking | 口语诊断

Can you speak for 60–120 seconds on a familiar topic with repair?

50. Diagnostic: reading | 阅读诊断

Can you read a short connected paragraph and identify main idea, details and action?

51. Diagnostic: writing | 写作诊断

Can you write 5–8 connected sentences with time, reason and one connector?

52. Diagnostic: grammar | 语法诊断

Can you control:

  • present simple/continuous
  • past simple
  • future choices
  • questions/negatives
  • countability
  • comparatives

53. Diagnostic: vocabulary | 词汇诊断

Can you use familiar words in several topics and paraphrase when one word is missing?

54. The A2 bridge weekly structure | A2 过渡周结构

Day 1listening + transcript diagnosis听力
Day 2grammar contrast + speaking语法口语
Day 3reading + vocabulary families阅读词汇
Day 4past/future story时态
Day 5writing paragraph写作
Day 6real-life role-play任务
Day 7review Green/Amber/Red诊断

55. Twelve-week bridge | 十二周过渡建议

  • Weeks 1–2: stabilise A1 weak links
  • Weeks 3–4: longer listening and speaking
  • Weeks 5–6: past/future expansion
  • Weeks 7–8: paragraph reading/writing
  • Weeks 9–10: vocabulary depth and collocations
  • Weeks 11–12: mixed real-life simulations

Adjust speed to the learner; this is a training model, not a fixed rule.

56. Stop measuring only word count | 不要只数单词

Better progress measures:

  • tasks completed
  • time to answer
  • repair success
  • listening without transcript
  • longer connected output

57. Stop measuring only grammar tests | 不要只看语法题

A learner can choose the right answer on paper but still fail to use it in conversation. Test transfer.

58. Use real-life missions | 用真实任务升级

  • plan a day trip
  • write a complaint and solution request
  • describe last weekend
  • compare two travel options
  • arrange a meeting by message

59. Reading practice: A2-direction text | 阅读过渡

Last Saturday, Mei planned to meet her friend at a new café. She took the train because parking near the café was expensive. The train was delayed, so she sent a message to say she would be late. When she arrived, the café was full. They decided to walk to another place nearby, which was quieter and cheaper. Mei was disappointed at first, but the second café was actually better.

  1. Why did Mei take the train?
  2. What problem happened?
  3. What did she do about it?
  4. Why did they change cafés?
  5. How did her opinion change?

60. Writing practice: past + reason + result | 写作过渡

Write 6–8 sentences about a fictional day. Include:

  • past event
  • problem
  • because
  • so
  • but
  • final result

61. Speaking practice: compare two options | 比较口语

Compare bus and train using:

  • faster/slower
  • cheaper/more expensive
  • more comfortable
  • better for…

62. Error clinic | 过渡阶段常见错误

ProblemBetter move
I chase advanced grammar while A1 questions are unstable.Repair the weak link first.
I translate every sentence.Delay Chinese and use context.
I learn many synonyms but no collocations.Grow vocabulary in families/chunks.
I speak longer but lose structure.Use main point → detail → reason.
I avoid unfamiliar listening.Add controlled variation gradually.

63. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • short texts still difficult → Lesson 030.
  • messages unclear → Lesson 031.
  • real-time speaking collapses → Lesson 032.
  • sentence building slow → Lesson 033.
  • grammar choices unstable → Lesson 034.
  • vocabulary form/collocation weak → Lesson 035.

Answer key | 答案

1 A1 core tasks/questions/repair/time; 2 wider/longer/more independent connected use; 3–30 answers vary.

67. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Do not push the learner into harder materials simply because they finished Lesson 036. Use performance evidence: listening, speaking, reading, writing and recovery.

Keep A1 language active while adding A2 range. Progress is cumulative.

For Mandarin speakers, reduce translation dependence gradually rather than banning Chinese abruptly.

Use real-life missions and connected texts. A2 growth is visible when learners can connect ideas and handle variation, not merely when they memorise more rules.

68. What Lessons 033–036 add | 第三十三至三十六课增加了什么?

LessonNew control
033build sentences rapidly from chunks
034choose everyday grammar patterns deliberately
035grow vocabulary through connected families and collocations
036bridge stable A1 into wider A2 communication

69. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Listen to one short everyday exchange.
  2. Summarise it in English.
  3. Speak for two minutes on a familiar topic.
  4. Use past, present and future.
  5. Give one reason and one comparison.
  6. Read one short paragraph without translating every word.
  7. Write 6–8 connected sentences.
  8. Paraphrase one missing word.
  9. Repair one misunderstanding.
  10. Choose the next weak link instead of restarting the course.

If you can do these tasks with reasonable stability, you are ready to spend more of your study time on A2-level expansion while continuing to maintain the A1 system.

如果这些任务已经比较稳定,你就可以把更多学习时间转向 A2 扩展,同时继续维护 A1 基础系统。
