How to Learn Basic English (Chinese Edition) | Lesson No.032 | Speaking with Confidence and Repair | 自信口语与交流修复

Series ID: EDKS-BASIC-ZH-0032 · Lesson No.032 · 零基础英语第三十二课 · Pre-A1 → A1 Speaking

Speaking with Confidence and Repair | 自信口语与交流修复

Speak small. Pause. Repair. Continue.
说短一点。停一下。修复。继续。

Confidence in speaking does not mean speaking fast without mistakes. It means you can start, keep going, notice when communication breaks, repair the problem and continue.

口语自信不是“说得快、完全不犯错”。真正的自信是:敢开始、能继续、发现交流出问题时会修复,然后重新回到对话。

This lesson builds a speaking loop: chunk → message → pause → check → repair → continue.

The speaking map | 口语路线

  • start with reliable chunks
  • speak in short message units
  • pause naturally
  • use fillers carefully
  • self-correct without restarting everything
  • ask for repetition
  • ask for slower speech
  • confirm names/numbers
  • clarify one detail
  • use one discriminating question
  • recover after misunderstanding
  • manage turn-taking
  • handle not knowing a word
  • paraphrase with simpler English
  • use gesture/visual support when appropriate
  • focus on intelligibility, not accent erasure

1. Speaking confidence is operational | 自信是“能运转”

A confident beginner can say:

  • I don’t know the word.
  • Please say that again.
  • Do you mean Tuesday?
  • Sorry, I mean Thursday.

These are signs of control, not failure.

2. Start with chunks | 从完整小块开始

Useful chunks:

  • I think…
  • I need…
  • I’m looking for…
  • Can you help me?
  • What time…?
  • Where is…?

Chunks reduce the amount of grammar you must build in real time.

3. One message per breath | 一口气一个意思

Instead of one long unstable sentence, use short units.

Hard:

I want to ask because tomorrow maybe I need go station and I don’t know which train…

Better:

I need to go to the station tomorrow. Which train goes to the airport?

4. Pause is allowed | 停顿是允许的

A short pause gives your brain time to retrieve the next chunk.

Silence for one second is better than filling every gap with panic.

5. Useful fillers | 可用填充词

  • Well…
  • Let me think.
  • One moment.
  • I’m not sure.

Use them to buy thinking time, not to avoid answering indefinitely.

6. Do not overuse “uh” and “erm” | 不要每个词前都填音

Natural speech includes fillers, but too many fillers can make meaning harder to follow. Replace some fillers with a silent pause.

7. Say the key word first if needed | 必要时先说关键词

If you are stuck, say the content word:

  • Station… where?
  • Water… please.

Then rebuild the full sentence:

  • Where is the station?
  • Can I have some water, please?

Communication first, refinement second.

8. Self-correction | 自我纠正

  • Tuesday—sorry, Thursday.
  • Two tickets—sorry, three tickets.
  • He works—sorry, he worked there last year.

You do not need to restart the whole conversation.

9. “Sorry, I mean…” | 我是说……

  • Sorry, I mean Friday.
  • Sorry, I mean the blue one.

This is a powerful self-repair chunk.

10. “Let me say that again” | 我重新说一下

  • Let me say that again.
  • Sorry, let me try again.

Use when the whole sentence became unclear.

11. Ask for repetition | 请重复

  • Please say that again.
  • Can you repeat that?

Do not pretend to understand if the information matters.

12. Ask for slower speech | 请慢一点

  • Please speak more slowly.
  • Can you say that slowly?

13. Ask for one word | 只问一个词

  • Which word?
  • What was the last word?
  • Can you spell that?

Reduce the repair target.

14. Ask for written support | 要求写下来

  • Can you write it down?
  • Can you show me?
  • Can you point to it?

Change channel when sound is not enough.

15. Confirm what you heard | 确认听到的信息

  • Did you say thirty?
  • Did you say Platform 4?
  • Friday at three, correct?

16. Read back numbers | 回读数字

  • 9123 4567, correct?
  • Thirty dollars, right?

Exact details deserve confirmation.

17. One discriminating question | 一个最关键的问题

If several possibilities exist, ask the one question that separates them.

Example:

  • Is the meeting online or in Room 4?
  • Do you mean Tuesday or Thursday?
  • Is this the blue line or the green line?

One good question can replace five vague questions.

18. Clarify category first | 先判断类别

  • Is this about the meeting?
  • Do you mean the train ticket?
  • Are you asking about today or tomorrow?

19. Clarify detail second | 再确认细节

  • What time?
  • Which room?
  • Which size?
  • How many?

20. Turn-taking | 轮流说话

Useful signals:

  • Okay.
  • I see.
  • Right.
  • And then?

These show you are listening and can invite the other person to continue.

21. Do not interrupt every unknown word | 不要每个生词都打断

If the main message is still clear, wait. Ask only when the unknown word blocks the task.

22. Entering a conversation | 加入对话

  • Excuse me, can I ask something?
  • Can I add something? — recognition phrase

23. Holding your turn | 保持话轮

  • One moment.
  • Let me finish this part.
  • Just a second.

Useful when you need a little more time.

24. Ending your turn | 结束话轮

  • That’s all.
  • That’s what I mean.
  • What do you think?

25. When you do not know a word | 不会一个词怎么办

Do not stop the whole conversation. Describe it.

  • It’s a thing for…
  • It’s a place where…
  • You use it to…
  • It looks like…

26. Paraphrase | 换简单说法

If you forget umbrella:

The thing you use when it rains.

Not perfect, but communicative.

27. Use examples | 用例子

  • I mean drinks, for example tea or coffee.
  • I mean public transport, like buses and trains.

28. Use contrast | 用对比

  • Not hot—cold.
  • Not Tuesday—Thursday.
  • Not this one—the other one.

29. Use gesture carefully | 适当用手势

Pointing or showing an object can support meaning in face-to-face situations. Do not rely on gesture when the exact verbal information matters.

30. Eye contact varies | 眼神交流有文化差异

Different cultures and individuals have different norms. Focus on respectful engagement, not one rigid rule.

31. Volume | 音量

Speak loudly enough to be heard, but do not shout. If the environment is noisy, move closer or change location when appropriate.

32. Pace | 速度

Speak at a speed you can control. Faster is not automatically more fluent.

33. Stress important words | 重读关键词

Example:

I need TWO tickets for FRIDAY.

Key information can receive more prominence.

34. Final consonants | 词尾辅音

Some word endings carry grammar or meaning:

  • book / books
  • work / worked
  • can / can’t

Do not force an exaggerated accent. Aim for intelligibility.

35. Pronunciation goal: intelligibility | 发音目标:听得懂

You do not need to erase your Mandarin identity. The practical goal is for listeners to recover the intended word and sentence reliably.

36. Grammar goal: stable core | 语法目标:核心稳定

Prioritise high-frequency structures:

  • I am…
  • I have…
  • I need…
  • Do you…?
  • Where is…?
  • I don’t…

37. Vocabulary goal: usable words | 词汇目标:能调用

Twenty instantly usable words can be more valuable in conversation than 200 words you cannot retrieve.

38. Response delay | 回答延迟

If you know the answer after five seconds, the knowledge exists. Train retrieval speed with repeated short prompts.

39. Same prompt, faster answer | 同一问题逐渐加速

Practise:

  • Where do you live?
  • What time do you start work?
  • What did you do yesterday?

Answer the same question over several days.

40. Expand one sentence | 一句逐步扩展

  • I work.
  • I work in a bank.
  • I work in a bank near my home.
  • I usually start at nine.

Build length gradually.

41. Reduce one long sentence | 长句拆小

If a sentence collapses, split it into two or three sentences.

42. Speaking in past time | 过去口语

  • Yesterday I worked.
  • Then I went home.
  • I was tired.

Use sequence words instead of one giant sentence.

43. Speaking in future time | 未来口语

  • Tomorrow I’m going to work.
  • I’ll take the train.
  • I’m meeting Anna at six.

44. Speaking under service pressure | 服务场景压力

Use stable chunks:

  • I’d like…
  • Can I have…?
  • How much is…?
  • Can I pay by card?

45. Speaking under travel pressure | 出行压力

  • Which train goes to…?
  • Which platform?
  • Where do I get off?
  • Is this the right bus?

46. Speaking under problem pressure | 问题场景压力

  • There’s a problem.
  • This isn’t working.
  • Can you check?
  • What can we do?

47. Social speaking | 社交口语

  • Nice to meet you.
  • Are you free Saturday?
  • That sounds good.
  • Sorry, I can’t.

48. Phone speaking | 电话口语

  • Hello, this is Mei.
  • Can I speak to Anna?
  • Please ask her to call me back.

49. Mandarin transfer: sentence fragments | 中文片段式表达迁移

Mandarin context can carry more omitted information. English often needs explicit subject/verb support.

  • 很忙。 → I’m very busy.
  • 不知道。 → I don’t know.
  • 可以。 → Yes, that’s okay. / I can. / That’s possible, depending on meaning.

50. Mandarin transfer: polite indirectness | 礼貌方式不同

Chinese may use 麻烦、不好意思、请. English may use modal questions, please, apology or tone.

  • 麻烦你再说一次。 → Could you say that again?
  • 不好意思,我没听清。 → Sorry, I didn’t hear that clearly.

51. Confidence ladder | 自信阶梯

  1. read sentence aloud
  2. repeat from memory
  3. change one word
  4. answer a prompt
  5. role-play with known pattern
  6. role-play with one surprise
  7. complete real-life mission

52. Surprise is necessary | 必须加入一点意外

Real conversation changes. Add one surprise:

  • different price
  • different time
  • wrong item
  • unknown word

Then practise repair.

53. Record yourself | 录音

Record a 30-second answer. Listen for:

  • clear key words
  • missing verbs
  • long pauses
  • repeated errors

Do not judge your voice or accent emotionally. Analyse the communication.

54. One improvement per recording | 每次只修一个点

Choose one:

  • clearer final consonants
  • correct question helper
  • shorter pauses
  • better number clarity

55. Speaking practice A: café surprise | 口语 A

You order tea. Staff says tea is sold out. You must:

  1. understand problem
  2. ask what is available
  3. choose another drink
  4. pay

56. Speaking practice B: station surprise | 口语 B

Your platform changes. You must:

  1. confirm new platform
  2. ask how to get there
  3. repeat the number back

57. Speaking practice C: social surprise | 口语 C

A friend changes lunch time from 12 to 1. You must accept or suggest another time and confirm.

58. Speaking practice D: unknown word | 口语 D

You forget the word receipt. Describe it:

The paper from the shop after I pay.

Then learn the exact word after communication succeeds.

59. Error clinic | 常见口语误区

ProblemBetter move
I wait for perfect grammar before speaking.Use a stable chunk and start.
I restart the whole sentence after one error.Correct only the broken part.
I pretend to understand.Use repair language.
I speak too fast and lose grammar.Slow to controllable pace.
I stop because one word is missing.Paraphrase.

60. First weak link diagnosis | 第一个卡点诊断

  • I cannot start → opening chunks.
  • I start but sentence collapses → shorten message units.
  • I know answer but too slowly → retrieval speed.
  • I understand but cannot repair → repair ladder.
  • I lose one word and stop → paraphrase.
  • listener misunderstands numbers → stress/read-back.
  • I overfocus on accent → return to intelligibility.

61. Retrieval lab | 提取练习

  • 让我想一下。 → ______
  • 对不起,我是说星期四。 → ______
  • 我重新说一下。 → ______
  • 请再说一次。 → ______
  • 你刚才说三十吗? → ______
  • 一个数字一个数字说。 → ______
  • 我不知道这个词。 → ______

65. For parents and teachers | 给家长和老师

Do not equate confidence with volume, speed or extroversion. A quiet learner who can ask for clarification may have stronger real communication control.

Teach repair as part of speaking from the beginning. Do not wait until “fluency” arrives.

For Mandarin speakers, reduce pressure to translate complete Chinese sentences before speaking. Build directly from English chunks.

Use role-plays with one unexpected variable. Stable scripts alone do not train recovery.

66. What Lessons 029–032 add | 第二十九至三十二课增加了什么?

LessonNew control
029decode connected everyday speech
030extract action from short digital texts
031write concise useful messages
032speak, repair and recover in real time

67. Final real-world challenge | 最终真实任务

  1. Start a conversation without a script.
  2. Answer five familiar questions.
  3. Pause without stopping.
  4. Self-correct one detail.
  5. Ask for repetition.
  6. Confirm one number/name.
  7. Paraphrase one missing word.
  8. Handle one unexpected change.
  9. Recover from one misunderstanding.
  10. Complete a two-minute real-life mission.

If you can do this, your English can survive imperfection. That is a major step toward independent communication.

如果能做到,你的英语已经可以在“不完美”的情况下继续运转。这就是独立交流非常重要的一步。
