The vocabulary is useful. The danger is that the label becomes a substitute for reasoning.
A fallacy label is only valuable if the student can explain exactly what went wrong in the relationship between claim, evidence and conclusion.

A logical fallacy is a recurring pattern of weak or invalid reasoning. Strong students do not hunt for labels first. They reconstruct the argument, identify the evidence and assumptions, test whether the conclusion follows, and only then use a fallacy name if it helps describe the failure.

False Dilemma: Pretending There Are Only Two Choices
Either we ban phones completely or students will never concentrate.
The argument treats two extreme options as if they exhaust the solution space.
Possible alternatives might include:
- phones stored during lessons but available at breaks;
- teacher-authorised educational use;
- different rules for different age groups;
- restricted use only during assessment or direct instruction.
The repair is to reopen the alternatives that the wording prematurely closed.
Slippery Slope: A Chain With Missing Mechanisms
If students are allowed one deadline extension, soon nobody will meet deadlines at all.
A sequence of consequences is asserted, but the links are not established.
A slippery-slope claim is not weak simply because it predicts several steps. Some chains are real. The question is whether each step has a credible mechanism and evidence.

Ad Hominem: Attacking the Person Instead of the Claim
An ad hominem attack redirects attention from the argument to a characteristic of the person making it.
Her argument about public transport cannot be right because she does not even drive.
Whether she drives may be irrelevant to whether the evidence and reasoning are sound.
However, personal information can sometimes be relevant. If the person claims first-hand expertise that she does not possess, that affects source credibility.
The student must therefore ask whether the personal fact actually bears on the claim.
Appeal to Popularity: Many Believers Do Not Automatically Make a Claim True
Everyone in the class uses this method, so it must be the best way to study.
Popularity may be evidence that a method is convenient, familiar or socially accepted. It is not sufficient evidence that it produces the best learning outcomes.
The key failure is the assumption that widespread acceptance establishes quality or truth.

Appeal to Authority: Expertise Must Match the Claim
Expert evidence is valuable. The fallacy occurs when authority replaces relevant evidence or when expertise is transferred into an unrelated domain.
A famous actor says this investment strategy is reliable, so it must be safe.
The actor’s fame is not relevant financial expertise.
Students should ask whether the source has suitable expertise and whether the underlying evidence is visible.

False Cause: Sequence Is Not Automatically Causation
The class started using new notebooks and examination scores improved. Therefore, the notebooks caused the improvement.
The timing is compatible with causation but does not establish it.
Other explanations may exist: more revision, easier papers, better attendance or improved teaching.
Students should search for the missing mechanism and alternative causes.
Straw Man: Weakening the Other Side Before Answering It
A straw-man argument replaces an opponent’s actual position with an easier version.
Some parents want less homework because they do not want their children to work hard.
That may ignore the stronger position: some parents may support practice but question excessive volume, poor targeting or sleep disruption.
Strong rebuttal requires fair representation.

Circular Reasoning: The Conclusion Is Smuggled Into the Premise
This rule is fair because it treats people fairly.
The second statement does not provide an independent reason. It restates the conclusion in slightly different words.
A stronger argument would define a criterion for fairness and show how the rule meets it.
Red Herring: Introducing an Irrelevant Issue
Should the school improve ventilation? What about all the students who leave litter in the canteen?
Litter may be a genuine problem. It does not answer the ventilation question.
Students should ask whether the new point changes the claim under discussion or merely changes the subject.
Loaded Question: The Assumption Is Hidden Inside the Question
Why has the school continued to ignore student wellbeing?
The question assumes the school has in fact ignored wellbeing.
Before answering why, the reader may need to test whether the embedded claim is justified.

Analogy Can Become Fallacious When the Mapping Is Too Weak
Analogies are useful when the relevant relationship transfers. They become misleading when the writer imports features the two cases do not share.
A false analogy is therefore best analysed by identifying which structural similarity is claimed and where it breaks.

Rhetoric Can Hide Weak Reasoning
A weak argument may sound compelling because it uses repetition, certainty, emotional vocabulary or rhetorical questions.
Students need to separate delivery from support:

Not Every Weak Argument Fits One Neat Label
Real arguments can fail in several ways at once.
A writer may use a weak source, overgeneralise from it, frame the alternatives unfairly and then use emotive language to make the conclusion sound certain.
Trying to force the entire argument into one named fallacy can hide the actual structure.
Diagnose the reasoning first. Classify it second.
A Worked Example
Every successful student I know studies late at night. If schools discourage late-night study, academic standards will collapse. Anyone supporting earlier bedtimes simply does not understand what achievement requires.
Several problems appear:
- “Every successful student I know” may be an unrepresentative sample.
- The move from discouraging late-night study to collapsing standards asserts a dramatic causal chain without enough support.
- The final sentence attacks the understanding of opponents instead of answering evidence about sleep and learning.
Students could attach several fallacy labels. But the analytical answer is stronger because it shows exactly how each part fails.
How to Repair a Fallacious Argument
Fallacy analysis should not stop at criticism.
Students can repair arguments by:
- narrowing the conclusion;
- adding stronger or more representative evidence;
- making assumptions explicit;
- restoring missing alternatives;
- showing a causal mechanism;
- removing irrelevant personal attacks;
- representing the opposing view fairly;
- calibrating certainty.
