How Students Decode English Questions Before Answering
A student can understand a passage, know the vocabulary and still lose marks because the wrong question was answered.

Why Good Students Sometimes Give Wrong Answers

The topic is similar. The operation changes each time.
A student who reads only for topic may give the same answer to all five questions. A student who reads operationally changes the response structure.
“What” and “Why” Are Not Interchangeable
Suppose a character leaves the room after an argument.
Question: What did she do?
Answer: She left the room.
Question: Why did she leave the room?
Now the student must infer motive or cause from the evidence.
The passage has not changed. The task has.
“How” Often Requires a Mechanism
Questions beginning with “how” frequently ask for the relationship between a language choice and its effect.
How does the writer show that the neighbourhood has changed?
A weak answer may simply state: “The neighbourhood has become busier.”
A stronger answer identifies the textual mechanism: the writer contrasts the former quiet streets with present-day traffic, construction and crowds.
“How” often means: through what evidence, language or structural move is this meaning created?
Scope Words Protect Against Over-Answering
Students can lose precision by answering from the whole passage when the question asks about one line, or by focusing on one sentence when the question asks about the entire text.
Scope markers include:
- “in paragraph 3”;
- “in these lines”;
- “throughout the passage”;
- “at the beginning”;
- “by the end”;
- “in both texts”.
Marking the scope before reading for evidence prevents irrelevant knowledge from leaking into the answer.
Quantity Words Matter
If a question asks for two reasons, the student’s answer needs two distinct reasons.
If it asks for one word, a full sentence may create unnecessary risk. If it asks for a phrase, copying an entire sentence may hide whether the student can isolate the precise evidence.
Quantity is part of the task, not a formatting preference.
“Use Your Own Words” Changes the Answer Route
When a question requires own words, students cannot simply locate and copy the matching line.
The route becomes:
Locate evidence → understand meaning → preserve the relationship → rebuild in new language → check that meaning did not change.

Students sometimes interpret “suggest” as permission to guess.
In a comprehension task, “suggest” usually means the answer may not be stated directly, but it must still be grounded in evidence.

This may be enough in a simple context. In a harder task, the student may need to explain how repeated clock-checking signals impatience or anxiety while waiting.
“Explain” asks the student to make the relationship visible.
Question Words Can Carry Hidden Constraints
Small words matter.
- mainly asks for the dominant purpose, not every possible purpose;
- most likely asks for the best-supported interpretation, not absolute certainty;
- one limits quantity;
- both requires evidence from two sources;
- different requires contrast;
- in your own words limits copying;
- from the passage limits unsupported outside knowledge.
Ignoring one small constraint can change the task entirely.
Decode the Answer Form Before Writing
Students should predict the shape of the answer.
- Is one word enough?
- Do I need a complete sentence?
- Do I need evidence plus explanation?
- Do I need two paired comparisons?
- Do I need to state a judgement and justify it?
This prevents both under-answering and writing far more than the task needs.
Question Decoding Reduces Working-Memory Waste
When the student is unclear about the task, working memory is wasted holding several possible answer routes at once.
Once the operation is identified, attention can be allocated more efficiently:
I know what I am looking for, what evidence counts and what form the answer should take.
